― installment

A teenager in Quebec bought her first lottery ticket the day she turned 18 — and hit the jackpot.

Charlie Lagarde walked into a convenience store on March 14 to buy a bottle of sparkling wine and lottery ticket on her birthday, and walked out a millionaire.
(Megan Cerullo. Quebec teen wins $1,000 a week for life on 18th birthday. New York Daily News. March 28, 2018.)

Lagarde opted to receive $1,000 every week for the rest of her life in lieu of the lump sum.

The lucky winner spent a few weeks deciding whether to accept the one-time payout or receive the cash prize in installments.

She consulted with a financial advisor who persuaded her to choose the non-taxed, weekly income.
(ibid.)

installment(s)

gonorrhea

A man in the UK has caught the world's "worst-ever" case of super-gonorrhoea.

He had a regular partner in the UK, but picked up the superbug after a sexual encounter with a woman in South East Asia.

Public Health England says it is the first time the infection cannot be cured with first choice antibiotics.

Health officials are now tracing any other sexual partners of the man, who has not been identified, in an attempt to contain the infection's spread.
(Man has 'world's worst' super-gonorrhoea. BBC News. March 28, 2018.)

But symptoms can include a thick green or yellow discharge from sexual organs, pain when urinating and bleeding between periods.

Untreated infection can lead to infertility, pelvic inflammatory disease and can be passed on to a child during pregnancy.
(ibid.)

rhinorrhea(鼻漏)
menorrhea(月経)
amenorrhea(無月経)

Keith Raniere, the founder of an organization that presented itself as a self-help group, has been arrested on charges of sex trafficking after he allegedly blackmailed women, branded with his initials and kept them as “slaves.”

Over a month after an arrest warrant was issued for the 57-year-old, police officers tracked him down on Sunday to a luxury villa near Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and detained him, according to Brooklyn federal court documents. He is due to appear in court in Texas on Tuesday to faces charges relating to sex trafficking and conspiracy to commit forced labor.
(Kashmira Gander. What Is NXIVM? Founder of Secretive Self-Help Group Charged with Sex Trafficking. Newsweek. March 27, 2018.)

guillotine

Rats are believed to easily outnumber Parisians in the city, with their numbers increasing all the time.

And in an attempt to improve the situation, the city has taken some drastic measures including closing parks and bringing cats into prestigious illustrious government buildings but a recent stomach-churning video showing scores of rats in a Paris dumpster sparked alarm over the invasion of rats in the French capital.

Now it's trying another -- much more aggressive -- method of combating the rodent population...the guillotine.

In the Paris suburb of Aubervilliers which is particularly affected by the rodent invasion, authorities have been testing a mechanical version of the famous French execution device in the sewers.
(Paris could bring back the guillotine to stem the rat invasion. The Local France. February 9, 2018.)

a machine for beheading by means of a heavy blade that slides down in vertical guides
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

A Long Island man’s $70,000 dream car turned into a nightmare when the luxury ride’s self-closing door chopped off his right thumb.

Now victim Godwin Boateng sometimes wears a fake digit from a $3 magician’s kit in its place — and is suing car manufacturer BMW.

“I carried my thumb into the hospital, and they said, ‘What happened to you?’ ” said Boateng, 61, a software engineer from Valley Stream.
(My $70K BMW cut off my thumb. New York Post. March 25, 2018.)

― quick

Ever since childhood, she has bitten her nails down to the quick, often gnawing at them until the cuticles bleed, especially when she's nervous or bored.
(The Washington Post, 2010)

a painfully sensitive spot or area of flesh (such as that underlying a fingernail or toenail)

the quick and the dead

touch a person to the quick

whittle

ROUND ROCK, Tex. — It was not much — surveillance footage in and near an Austin-area FedEx store showing a man in a disguise dropping off packages. But for investigators from federal, state and local agencies who had been hunting a mysterious and prolific bomb-maker, it was what they needed — their first big break.

Up to that point in a two-week investigation, officials had never laid eyes on the man they believed was responsible for terrorizing the Texas capital since March 2. In the security footage, a red 2002 Ford Ranger could be seen, officials said. Because the authorities did not have a license plate number, they began combing through records — all of them, for every vehicle with the same make and model in Texas. Investigators then began trying to match the records with a white male, possibly in his 20s.

Officials had now whittled down the number of potential license plates and began tailing a handful of people. One of them turned out to be Mark Conditt — the man that the authorities now believe was the Austin serial bomber.
(Lucky Breaks, Video and Pink Gloves Led to Austin Bombing Suspect. The New York Times. March 21, 2018.)

whittled down the number of potential license plates

How do celebrities who have babies whittle away the pounds so quickly and what kind of message is that sending to regular women out there?
(CNN, 2007)

Kids' drawings show how their views on gender and STEM have changed

Imagine asking a classroom full of elementary school students to draw a scientist. Now try to guess how many of them would sketch a female or male scientist.

In the decade that spanned 1966 to 1977, teachers across the country gave 4,800 elementary school students this exact task in what became known as the Draw-A-Scientist study. Then a researcher named David Wade Chambers analyzed the drawings. What he found, in 1983, might not surprise you: Only 28 of the children drew a female scientist — and those students were all girls. That amounted to less than one percent of all students.

Rest assured that as times have changed, so have kids' gender stereotypes. A new study published in Child Development Tuesday analyzed dozens of Draw-A-Scientist studies conducted since Chambers' landmark experiment and found that, on average, 28 percent of participants drew a female scientist in the subsequent studies.
(Rebecca Ruiz. Kids are drawing more female scientists than ever before. Mashable. March 20, 2018.)

science, technology, engineering, and mathematics

The fact that, on average, more than a quarter of students participating in a Draw-A-Scientist study depicted a woman over the past three decades is heartening progress yet still nowhere close to parity, she says. Indeed, while women have made considerable gains in some STEM fields, they remain drastically underrepresented in others, like physics, engineering, and computer science.
(ibid)

bodega

Scores of Big Apple convenience stores have run out of Doritos, Cheetos and other Frito-Lay products — and snack fans can blame PepsiCo chief executive Indra Nooyi for their less crunchy lunches.

Frito-Lay, a unit of PepsiCo, started to cut the pay of its drivers last year by as much as 33 percent, or $30,000, prompting dozens to quit, The Post has learned.

Even with management taking over some routes in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens, there are not enough trucks on the road to supply every customer, sources said.
(Josh Kosman. There is a massive Frito-Lay shortage in NYC bodegas. New York Post. March 19, 2018.)

NYC bodegas

throw a fit

A man and his young daughter were kicked off a Southwest Airlines flight after the toddler became upset and threw a fit as other passengers were boarding the flight.

But a Facebook video taken by another passenger, Alexis Armstrong, on Flight 1683 from Chicago to Atlanta shows the toddler being calm and quiet as Southwest employees remove her and her father from the aircraft.

The video begins with a Southwest employee telling the man to leave the flight with his daughter. The man argues that his daughter has calmed down before another airline employee also tells the man to leave the flight. Other passengers can be heard coming to the man’s defense before one of the employees threatens to put them on the next flight.
(Mark Matousek. Southwest faces outrage after a father and toddler were kicked off a flight when the child threw a tantrum. Business Insider. March 16, 2018.)

Pets on planes are significantly outnumbered by human passengers. But for airlines, dealing with passengers’ four-legged traveling companions can be fraught with problems.

Within the past year, Chicago-based United Airlines has found itself in the spotlight when a giant rabbit named Simon died aboard a trans-Atlantic flight and when the airline denied a seat to an emotional support peacock named Dexter.

Just this week, the airline said it would “assume full responsibility” for the death of a 10-month-old French bulldog that appeared to have suffocated Monday after it was placed inside an overhead compartment on a three-hour flight. On Tuesday, United reportedly sent a Kansas City, Mo.-bound German shepherd to Japan by mistake.
(United takes heat over puppy's tragic overhead bin death. But flyers' love for pets puts airlines in tough spot. Chicago Tribune. March 14, 2018.)

United takes heat over puppy's tragic overhead bin death

sexualize

According to a newly unsealed court filing, women at Microsoft who work in technical jobs filed 238 internal complaints pertaining to gender discrimination or sexual harassment from 2010 through 2016. The new document was first reported Monday evening by Reuters.

The figures were revealed as part of a proposed class-action lawsuit originally filed in 2015 (Moussouris v. Microsoft). The female plaintiffs argue that the company’s internal rating system discriminates against women and disfavors professional advancement for women.
(Cyrus Farivar. “Women at Microsoft are sexualized by their male managers,” lawsuit alleges. Ars Tecnica. March 14, 2018.)

Company records indicate that women at Microsoft are sexualized by their male managers and coworkers, leading to a substantial number of incidents of alleged sexual harassment, and even several incidents of sexual assault, that often go unpunished.
(ibid.)

to make sexual : endow with a sexual character or cast
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

The female plaintiffs argue that the company’s internal rating system discriminates against women and disfavors professional advancement for women.
(ibid.)

According to the American Psychological Association, sexualization occurs when "individuals are regarded as sex objects and evaluated in terms of their physical characteristics and sexiness."

― legume

Looking for a way to combat high blood pressure? One plant may be able to help, according to a new report.

Researchers from the University of Manitoba in Canada conducted a study, recently presented at an American Heart Association conference, to determine the foods associated with reducing hypertension.

To do so, they examined rats with unhealthy blood pressure levels and heart-related illnesses. They then fed them different types of legumes, including beans, lentils, peas and chickpeas, over a certain period of time.

After analyzing the results, they first found that eating a mix of legumes improved blood flow in the legs of animals with peripheral artery disease, which decreases the size of the arteries in the limbs.

They later discovered that lentils, specifically, blocked high blood pressure and reversed the decline in blood vessel health.
(Najja Parker. This common legume can help lower your blood pressure, study says. Atlanta Journal Constituion. March 13, 2018.)

legume

flunk

The last few years have been miserable for the estimated 50m dementia sufferers worldwide who are waiting for the first treatments that can arrest the devastating brain diseases.

Drug after drug has flunked the final stage of testing, even after earlier studies offered hope that the experimental medicines might be able to slow the relentless march of the illness.

Until a pharmaceuticals group develops a “disease-modifying” medicine, patients must make do with a handful of drugs that only slightly ameliorate the ravages of Alzheimer’s disease — which accounts for between 60 and 70 per cent of dementia cases — but do nothing to stop or slow it.
(David Crow. Hunt is on for a cure for dementia as more drugs flunk final stages. Financial Times. March 12, 2018.)

backpedal

Backpedal ―

(CNN) — The Trump administration on Sunday night proposed providing some school personnel with "rigorous" firearms training and backed a bill to improve criminal background checks on gun buyers, but backpedaled on the idea of increasing the minimum age to buy certain firearms -- a policy President Donald Trump had said he would support.

The proposals, which come more than three weeks after the Parkland, Florida, school shooting, also include a plan to establish a commission chaired by Education Secretary Betsy DeVos that will recommend policy and funding proposals for school violence prevention, including possible age restrictions on some firearms purchases. The commission does not have a set timeline of when it will report its findings, although an official said it would be within one year.
(White House proposes arming teachers, backpedals on raising age to buy guns. CNN. March 12, 2018.)

The Cardinals had the tying run on base when Beltran turned on Chapman's pitch for a sharp grounder to third base. Frazier backpedaled for the play and made the throw that took Votto off the base. Cardinals who saw the replay said Votto's toe didn't stay on the base.
(St Louis Post, 2013)

In response, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor - who has since backpedaled from the statement - proposed that any new disaster relief funds must be offset by cuts elsewhere in the federal budget.

dumpster fire

dumpster fire

In 2008, a user at Urban Dictionary defined the “dumpster fire.” The figurative one, that is:

1. A complete disaster.
2. Something very difficult that nobody wants to deal with.

“It’s a very serious entry from Urban Dictionary, very well drafted,” said Peter Sokolowski, editor at large at Merriam-Webster, which introduced the dumpster fire to its own online version this week.

Merriam-Webster’s definition? “An utterly calamitous or mismanaged situation or occurrence.”
(Abby Ohlheiser. Congratulations, everybody: ‘Dumpster fire’ is now a dictionary entry, and here’s why. The Washington Post. March 7, 2018.)

Business Group Powerpoint Mocks Trump’s ‘Dumpster Fire’ Presidency
(The National Memo. March 2, 2018.)

Meet The Members Of The Three-Comma Club

Capitalism’s global conquest continues as entrepreneurs around the globe mint fortunes in everything from cryptocurrencies to telecom to bridal dresses. Forbes has pinned down a record 2,208 billionaires from 72 countries and territories including the first ever from Hungary and Zimbabwe. This elite group is worth $9.1 trillion, up 18% since last year. Their average net worth is a record $4.1 billion. Americans lead the way with a record 585 billionaires, followed by mainland China with 373. Centi-billionaire Jeff Bezos secures the list’s top spot for the first time, becoming the only person to appear in the Forbes ranks with a 12-figure fortune. Bezos’s fortune leapt more than $39 billion, the list’s biggest one-year gain ever. He moves ahead of Bill Gates, who is now number 2.
(Meet The Members Of The Three-Comma Club. Forbes. March 6, 2018.)

Lone Star

Texans cast their votes in primaries Tuesday, the first contests of the 2018 election cycle. But voters in the Lone Star State have been voting for almost two weeks already — and there's been a big surge in enthusiasm across the board.

Driven by anti-President Trump fervor, in this typically deep red state, there are plenty of positive signs for a once-latent Democratic Party in the state. Early vote turnout for the minority party has surpassed GOP totals — and even bested their 2016 numbers. Democrats have also fielded a record number of candidates in all 36 congressional districts, and there's the potential to flip maybe three or more seats come November.
(Polls Close In Texas Primary, With Democrats Hoping To Show Off Big Turnout. NPR. March 6, 2018.)

Texans cast their votes...

voters in the Lone Star State have been voting...

Hoosier

Grabbing mimosa ingredients the day of an impromptu brunch.

Picking up a bottle of red wine for Sunday dinner while grocery shopping.

Rushing out to buy a case of your favorite beer because a few of your friends have invited themselves over at the last minute to watch a full day of NFL action.

These Sunday shopping scenarios were impossibilities in Indiana. But not now. Gov. Eric Holcomb signed a historic bill Wednesday that made Sunday carryout alcohol sales legal in Indiana.

Sunday ushered in the new reality that allows grocery, package liquor, drug and convenience stores to sell alcohol between the hours of noon and 8 p.m. on Sundays. The milestone was still setting in for Hoosiers who figured the state's ban on such sales would be as tied to the state's legacy as breaded tenderloins are.
(Justin L Mack. Sunday alcohol sales come to Indiana stores for the first time. Indy Star. March 4, 2018.)

Hoosier

hung parliament

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Asian shares were on the backfoot and the safe-haven yen rose on Monday amid fears of a global trade war, while the euro was choppy as investors worried Italy’s national elections could deliver an anti-establishment government.

Italian voters delivered a hung parliament on Sunday, flocking to anti-establishment and far-right parties in record numbers and casting the euro zone’s third-largest economy into a political gridlock that could take months to clear.
(Swati Pandey. Asian shares subdued; euro choppy amid Italian uncertainty. Reuters. March 5, 2018.)

a hung parliment

a parliament in which no political party has a clear majority
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

Does this selfie make my nose look big? Why, yes it does, according to a new study. A full 30 percent bigger than it would look if you didn't have a phone up in your mug.

Despite how easy it is to snap those all-pervasive self portraits, the short distance from the camera combines with the wide-angle lens to puff the proboscis, explains the research, published Thursday in the journal JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery.
(Leslie Katz. Yes, selfies do make your nose look bigger. CNET. March 1, 2018.)

proboscis

Tech giant Google has been accused of fostering a “bro culture” that saw female employees suffer sexual harassment on a daily basis in a new lawsuit by a filed by a former software engineer.

Loretta Lee, who spent seven years at Google before she as [sic] fired in 2016, accused the Californian company of sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and wrongful termination in a suit earlier this month.

It comes just six months after Google’s last major sexism scandal, which was sparked by the leak of a 10-page memo spread within the company, rallying against its diversity policies.
(Damien Sharkov. ‘BRO CULTURE’: FORMER GOOGLE EMPLOYEE FIRED FOR POOR PERFORMANCE LAUNCHES SEXUAL HARASSMENT SUIT. newsweek. March 1, 2018.)

bro culture

If you’re in college there’s a high probability that you or someone you know has discussed “bro culture,” “dude bros” or “frat culture” — and more likely than not the conversation was negative.

Bro culture” refers not just to macho behaviors in general, but also to darker things like binge drinking, sexism, rape culture and other elements associated with hyper masculinity.
(Kyler Sumter. What we mean when we say 'bro culture.’ USA Today. June 7, 2017.)
