ピンヒール ― stiletto

ハイヒールの絵文字を巡って、ちょっとした騒ぎになっているそうです。


An online brouhaha has erupted over women's shoes. Well, not real shoes. Emoji shoes. The red emoji stiletto, to be specific. The semi-controversy was sparked by public-relations expert Florie Hutchinson's campaign to persuade the Unicode Emoji Subcommittee (yes, that's a real thing) to add a ballet flat emoji. Why should women be limited to a sexy red stiletto — the only official "women's" shoe currently available in emoji-land? As Hutchinson argued in her proposal, "A flat shoe would help pave the way to a more gender nonsexualized pictorial representation of the footwear category."

”ハイヒールの絵文字”と書きましたが、具体的には、


red emoji stiletto


ということで、stilettoを辞書で引くと、短剣という意味が載っているのですが、後の方に、


stiletto heel


とあり、これはいわゆるヒール部分がかなり細くなっているハイヒールのことで、いわゆるピンヒールのことを指します。

”ピンヒール”というのは和製英語らしく、英語では"stiletto heel"、あるいは単に"stiletto"、もしくは"spike heel"というのが正しいようです。（American Heritage Dictionaryの定義では”stiletto”は、”spike heel”よりもさらに細いヒールということになっていますが。）

なぜ、ピンヒール（の絵文字）がやり玉に挙がっているかというと、それが女性の選択の自由を狭めているから、というのが背景のようです。

いわゆる「女性らしさ」を象徴するような絵文字としてのピンヒール（普通のハイヒールもそうですが）が、女性への押しつけだと受け取られているようです。
