Yesterday Apple removed all major VPN apps from its App Store in the country. These VPNs aided internet users there to get around the government’s vast system of censorship and access uncensored sources of media. But by doing so, Apple has clearly decided to put its business before the interests of the population, opposition leaders and activists.
(Mike Butcher. Apple’s capitulation to China’s VPN crack-down will return to haunt it at home. TechCrunch. July 30, 2017.)

Apple's capitulation

oblivion

After years of being outsold by the iPhone, the venerable iPod has taken a big step toward eventual oblivion. Apple said overnight in the US it was discontinuing two of the cheapest iPod models: the nano and shuffle.

The two products have been removed from the Apple online store and will vanish from retail locations as well. Apple demoted the iPod's placement in its retail stores a couple of years ago, moving the devices to the company's accessory shelves.
(Mark Gurman. Apple abandons cheap iPods in step toward eventual oblivion. Sydney Morning Herald. July 28, 2017.)

Microsoft Paint is on its deathbed, and it’s now appropriate to start planning the funeral.

The iconic computer application, launched in 1985 along with the first version of Windows, was designated by Microsoft on Monday as a “depreciated” program — one that “might be removed from future releases.”

Microsoft had already started to ease Paint out the door earlier this year with the release of 3D Paint, which also gives users the ability to add 3D graphics to their creations. With the release of the Windows 10 Creators Update this fall, MS Paint could be pushed further into oblivion by the Seattle-based tech giant or erased altogether. Internet Explorer — Microsoft’s much maligned browser — suffered a similar fate, being pushed behind new browser Edge on Windows 10.
(Microsoft Paint is on its way out and Twitter is sad. San Francisco Chronicle. July 24, 2017.)

oblivion

tough as nails

Senator John McCain has been diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor called a glioblastoma.

His diagnosis was revealed following a procedure last week in which surgeons removed a blood clot from above his left eye. Doctors say his tumor was associated with the blood clot.
(Lauren Meltzer. Cancer expert says John McCain's treatment option is "tolerable." CBS News. July 20, 2017.)

Unfortunately, the 80-year-old's form of cancer is difficult to treat. But Agus says the course of therapy is "tolerable," and if McCain receives treatment in Washington, D.C. he could perhaps continue working in the Senate during that time.

"As everybody alludes to, he's tough as nails," Agus said. "And so cancer has certainly a worthy opponent in this one. He's going to take it on."
(ibid.)

Western men are shooting blanks at unprecedented rates, according to a new study published in Human Reproduction Update.

Over the past 38 years, there has been a 52.4 percent drop in sperm concentration and a 59.3 percent decline in total sperm count among men from Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand, researchers from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and the Hebrew University-Hadassah Braun found.
(Christian Gollayan. American men's sperm count is plummeting. New York Post. July 25, 2017.)

shoot(ing) blanks

ー time famine

time famine

Ashley Whillans' summer started with what she calls "time famine."

Time famine, a term that first emerged in the scientific literature around 1999, refers to the universal feeling of having too much to do but not enough time to deal with those demands.
(Jacqueline Howard. How to fight 'time famine' and boost your happiness. CNN. July 24, 2017.)

time-saving purchase

"We find that spending money on time-saving purchases promotes daily happiness and reduces negative mood, because it protects us from the time stress that we feel in our daily lives," Whillans said. "So, I definitely have used in the last few weeks time-saving services," such as grocery delivery or house cleaning services, car services like Uber or Lyft, or paying a teen in the neighborhood to mow the lawn.

Spending discretionary dollars on time-saving purchases may protect you from the detrimental effects that a time famine can have on your happiness, suggests a new study of which Whillans served as lead author.
(ibid.)

Stay-At-Home-Mom

So it’s that big debate all us mothers have in our heads. Are we doing the right thing by our kids, our partners and ourselves. Truth is I don’t think we’ll ever be 100% happy with our decisions. Maybe it’s just me but I don’t think it’s possible to have ‘it all’, not all of the time anyway. What is ‘it all’? I guess that’s subjective but I interpret it to mean being there for our children all the time, earning an income, keeping a home in order, having time to ourselves and keeping a partner happy too.

I’ve been a SAHM for 6 months now. It was something that I wanted but also needed to do. We didn’t have any childcare options available for before and after school. Had we had this option - would I have gone back to work, I’m not sure? I’m lucky that financially not going back to work was a viable option.
(Helen Miller. The Mixed Up Life Of A SAHM. Huffington Post. July 14, 2017.)

Kristen Whirrett, a former Lutheran school teacher in Fort Wayne, Ind., always planned to take a career break to focus on motherhood.

Yet for a woman who calls herself a stay-at-home mom (SAHM), Whirrett spends much time working. During her children’s nap time and on Saturday mornings, when Andy takes the kids, she runs a blog, Joyfully Thriving, which documents her household-management strategies. It brings in revenue from affiliate sales and ads.
(Laura Vanderkam. Stay-at-home moms could be the secret to energizing America’s economy. New York Post. July 22, 2017.)

sweat fest

It’s an official sweat-fest in the Big Apple as the first heat wave of the year is smothering the city with 90-plus-degree temperatures, along with a heat index that will make it feel close to 99 degrees on Thursday.

“It’ll be oppressive,” said AccuWeather meteorologist Dave Dombek. “Three days in a row of 90-degree days makes it an official heat wave.”

After almost a week of clear skies and sweet breezes, the thermometer began inching up Wednesday and hit a high of 90 degrees.

Friday’s high is expected to be in the 90s, too.
(Simon Jones. Heatwave to give "Summer of Hell" a whole new meaning. New York Post. July 19, 2017.)

"Sweat fest"

Fido

Whether they're staring at us, barking at us or licking our faces, dogs are often eager to interact with humans and are highly attuned to our behaviors. But how did man's best friend go from weary wolf to friendly Fido?

New research suggests that the answer may be genetic. The study, published in the journal Science Advances, identifies a series of gene mutations that may make your puppy more amenable to playing with people. Similar mutations are found in humans and are known to eliminate a fear of strangers.
(Ben Panko. What Makes Fido So Friendly? It Could Be Genetic. Smithonian. July 19, 2017.)

Fido

dual citizenship

There are 23 other Australian MPs and senators aside from Scott Ludlam and Larissa Waters who were born overseas.

Of the 23, almost half of them have now moved to clarify their citizenship in the wake of their colleagues' bungles.

Ms Waters resigned from Federal Parliament yesterday after realising she held dual citizenship and was ineligible to serve under section 44 of the Australian constitution, which states:

"Any person who is under any acknowledgment of allegiance, obedience, or adherence to a foreign power, or is a subject or a citizen or entitled to the rights or privileges of a subject or a citizen of a foreign power shall be incapable of being chosen or of sitting as a senator or a member of the House of Representatives."
(Alle McMahon. Australian politicians born overseas jump to clarify citizenship after Waters, Ludlam bungles. ABC News. July 19, 2017.)

Renho said she was unaware of her dual nationality until last year when questions arose, and renounced her Taiwanese citizenship at that time.
(Japan lawmaker shows legal records to prove nationality. ABC News. July 18, 2017.)

a native or naturalized person who owes allegiance to a government and is entitled to protection from it
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

bushel

Vice President Pence’s bushel of false and misleading claims about health care

Vice President Pence recently spoke at the National Governors Association meeting in Providence, R.I., and made several questionable claims about the Senate GOP health-care proposal, the Better Care Reconciliation Act (BCRA).
(Michel Ye Hee Lee. The Washington Post. July 18, 2017.)

shard

NEW YORK (Reuters) — A New York meat processor is recalling more than 7 million pounds of hot dogs and sausages mostly under the Sabrett brand name after consumers complained about finding small pieces of bone in some of the products, the US Department of Agriculture said on Saturday.

In one case, someone who ate one of the hot dogs suffered a "minor oral injury," the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service said in a statement.
(7 million pounds of hot dogs are being recalled after someone bit into shards of bone. Business Insider. July 15, 2017.)

shards of bone

bear market

bear market

Some strategists say that slumping shares of Tesla could be in for even deeper losses, as the auto maker faces big tests of investor sentiment and its business strategy.

Tesla stock ended its worst weekly run in about a year and a half, dropping over 13 percent this week and briefly dipping into a bear market. The automaker faced down a litany of bad news, including delivery numbers that missed expectations, a set of bearish forecasts, and poor results in a vehicle safety test.
(Rebecca Ungarino. After entering a bear market, tumbling Tesla shares could be poised to fall further. CNBC. July 8, 2017.)

bull market

dead man's shoes

"Filling dead man's shoes"

Pursuing a career web, where strategic and intelligent lateral moves are met with as much kudos as traditional promotions, does away with the traditional career dilemma of filling “dead man’s shoes” to get ahead – waiting for someone in a position above yours to move on so you can get promoted.
(The downside of limitless career options. BBC News. June 26, 2017.)

If you talk about dead men's shoes, you are talking about a situation in which people cannot make progress in their careers until someone senior to them retires or dies.

Turns out you are not allowed to move white goods onto a train in Queensland, even if it is outside of peak hour.

But as Queensland Rail security video reveals, two would-be rail removalists in Brisbane had a crack a couple of months ago.

The footage shows a man encountering some difficulty as he wheels a fridge, mounted on a hand trolley, from a rail overpass into an elevator.

He then manoeuvrers it onto the Bowen Hills platform and into a waiting train.
(Nick Wiggins. Train removalists: Brisbane man fined $250 for moving fridge on train. ABC News. July 12, 2017.)

white goods

major household appliances (such as stoves and refrigerators) that are typically finished in white enamel
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

the boot

PASTA might be one of the most delicious foods on the planet, but be careful if you order Strozzapreti.

The weird looking, twisted handmade pasta shaped like a hangman’s knot was originally created to suffocate an insatiable priest.
You read that right.

Strozzapreti literally means ‘priest-stranglers’. It has a dark sinful past.

These corkscrew-looking penne date back to the 1600s. They were born upon a curse cast by women against gluttonous clergymen in central Italy, when the much-feared powerful Papal State ruled across the boot from the Adriatic to the Tyrrhenian seas.
(The choking history of Italy’s priest-strangler Strozzapreti pasta. News.com.au. July 9, 2017.)

Across the boot

― thumb tack

Ipswich City Council is offering a $5000 reward to catch vandals who scattered hundreds of dog food pellets laced with thumb tacks in a public park on the weekend.

Acting Ipswich Mayor Paul Tully reported the incident to police on Sunday after residents discovered the tacks scattered across the Augustine Heights Dog Park near Springfield.
(Sonia Kohlbacher. Thumb tack baits left in Ipswich dog park. The Australian. July 10, 2017.)

thumb tack

G20開幕 ― press the flesh

HAMBURG, Germany — President Trump and Russia's Vladimir Putin had their first opportunity to size each other up Friday ahead of their first one-on-one meeting at an international summit in Germany.

The two leaders shook hands and exchanged a few words ahead of their sit-down at the Group of 20 talks in Hamburg, according to Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov. It was the first time the two leaders pressed the flesh since U.S. intelligence agencies accused Putin of interfering in last year's presidential election to get Trump elected.
(Trump, Putin meet, shake hands. Now what? USA Today. July 7, 2017.)

press(ed) the flesh

not your cup of tea

"not your cup of tea"という表現がありますがどのように使われるかご存知でしょうか?

If you'd asked me a couple of months ago, I'd have said I'd seen " Gone With the Wind " three times - once with commercials, once when I was barely paying attention, and once on a 19-inch TV. The first time I considered myself too smart for it I was a teen-ager; the second time I thought it was a likable soap opera; and the third time I thought it was a fine movie, but not my cup of tea.
(San Francisco Chronicle, 2010.)

Collins Cobuild Dictionary of Idioms

If you say that something is not your cup of tea, you mean that you do not feel very enthusiastic about it or interested in it.

make a killing

Collins Cobuild Dictionary of Idioms

If someone makes a killing, they make a large profit very quickly and easily.

NEW DELHI: Even though the government has capped prices of cardiac stents, this has failed to bring much relief to patients. Companies, distributors and hospitals continue to earn hefty profits ranging from 40600% on other medical devices such as catheters, orthopaedic implants and surgical equipment, data submitted by regulatory authorities from Maharashtra and Odisha shows.
(Sushme Dey. Companies, hospitals make a killing out of medical devices. Economic Times. June 30, 2017.)

clothesline

President Trump signaled Sunday that he’s ready to rumble with the mainstream news media — tweeting a video in which he takes down CNN with a vicious pro-wrestling move.

The doctored clip shows Trump using a “clothesline” maneuver to flatten an opponent with CNN’s logo in place of his head, then pummeling him into submission on the ringside floor.

The brawler-in-chief’s video broadside — which he captioned “#FraudNewsCNN #FNN” — spurred the network to immediately jump into the fray and accuse Trump of goofing off ahead of his Wednesday departure for the G20 summit meeting in Germany.
(Trump literally tackles mainstream media with CNN ‘clothesline’ video. New York Post. July 2, 2017.)

clothesline maneuver

cockles of the heart

This taste warms the cockles of my heart.

warm the cockles of a person's heart
