the shaft

She says she got the shaft.

The artist who painted a 4-story-tall penis on a Lower East Side building is crying censorship because it was painted over.

“The pieces were commissioned by [Lower East Side art group] The New Allen,” Swedish artist Carolina Falkholt told The Post through a Facebook message after her mural was covered up in gray paint by the building’s owner. “As a trained graffiti writer I am used to my work being censored in different contexts.”

She painted the 40-foot-tall member on the side of 303 Broome St. on Christmas Eve. It grossed out neighbors for three days before it was taken down Wednesday evening.
(Massive penis artist says she got screwed. New York Post. December 28, 2017.)

(She says she) got the shaft.

不当な扱い(harsh or unfair treatment)

gizmo

Drop the plug and forget the mat — the Federal Communications Commission on Wednesday approved a wireless gizmo that lets people charge their smartphones and other devices from up to 3 feet away.

The Energous Corporation’s Watt Up device lets users charge their electronics without being connected to the charger through the use of radio frequencies — a first, The Hill reported.
(Bob Fredericks. Now you can charge your phone from up to 3 feet way. New York Post. December 27, 2017.)

gizmo

A Florida man was arrested Friday after he reportedly punched an ATM because it “was giving him too much money” during an incident in November.

Michael Joseph Oleksik, 23, was charged with criminal mischief after Wells Fargo requested Cocoa Police press charges against the man.

Law enforcement told Florida Today that Oleksik was seen on surveillance footage “standing at the ATM, pummeling the electronic teller’s touch screen on Nov. 29.”
(Man arrested for punching ATM that gave him ‘too much money.’ New York Post. December 26, 2017.)

ドイツ語のzahlen(意味はto count)に由来しています。

CHICAGO -- If you live in the Northeast or Midwest, you're not dreaming: It's looking like a white Christmas. But the trade-off is hazardous driving conditions across New England and the Great Plains. Out west, the Rocky Mountains have been pounded this weekend.

The National Weather Service issued a blizzard warning through 5 p.m. on Monday for portions of central and northern Maine. Forecasters warned that snow and wind gusts up to 50 mph could make travel "dangerous to impossible."

In other parts of New England a winter storm warning was in effect, with up to a foot of snow possible in some areas.
(White Christmas in cards for much of nation, forecasters say. CBS News. December 25, 2017.)

The trade-off is hazardous driving conditions

Merriam-Webster Dictionary

something that you do not want but must accept in order to have something that you want

― manure

LOS ANGELES -- Police on Saturday investigated a suspicious package addressed to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, CBS Los Angeles reports. The package was found on Bel Air Road, near Mnuchin's home, in Los Angeles.

The package was gift-wrapped and filled with manure, police say, CBS Los Angeles' Cristy Fajardo reports.

The package was found at a neighbor's home but was addressed to Mnuchin, which police say raised alarm bells.

LAPD officers, the bomb squad and the Secret Service poured into the area.
(Gift-wrapped manure addressed to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin: police. CBS News. December 24, 2017.)

emolument

A federal judge on Thursday dismissed a pair of lawsuits claiming that President Donald Trump’s failure to divest himself of his real estate empire and other business holdings violated the Constitution’s provision banning receipt of foreign “emoluments” while in public office.

U.S. District Court Judge George Daniels ruled that the two suits were fatally flawed because the plaintiffs failed to show injury directly related to the use of Trump’s properties by foreign officials and governments.
(Josh Gerstein. Judge dismisses suits claiming Trump violated emoluments clause. Politico. December 21, 2017.)

miller’s fee for grinding grain

inauthentic? unauthentic? ― inauthentic

Facebook, like every social media platform, has issues with harassment and bullying. In order to prevent certain types of harassment, Facebook is introducing some new features to help prevent unwanted friend requests and messages.

“We’ve heard stories from people who have blocked someone only to encounter the same harasser using a different account,” Facebook Global Head of Safety Antigone Davis wrote on Facebook’s blog. “In order to help prevent those bad encounters, we are building on existing features that prevent fake and inauthentic accounts on Facebook.”

Let’s say you block someone and then that person decides to create another account so they can contact you. With these new tools in place, Facebook is aiming to recognize when someone does that and prevent them from sending a message or friend request to you. Facebook is using signals, like IP addresses, to recognize when someone has created a fake or inauthentic account.
(Megan Rose Dickey. Facebook has new tools to prevent unwanted friend requests and messages. Tech Crunch. December 20, 2017.)

inauthentic

Rail safety can’t wait

Our hearts go out to victims of Monday’s horrifying Amtrak derailment in DuPont and to their families.

Perhaps one way to pay tribute to them is by promptly addressing the factors in this accident that could improve the safety of rail travel.

Although the NTSB investigation is just getting underway, some important questions must be answered by the public and private operators of passenger trains in Washington state and beyond.

Amtrak Cascades Train 501 was going 80 mph into a 30 mph curve when it derailed Monday morning, strongly suggesting operating errors.
(Rail safety can’t wait. Seattle Times. December 19, 2017.)

Rail safety can’t wait

Merriam-Websterでは、

to remain temporarily neglected or unrealized

homeopathy

The Food and Drug Administration on Monday proposed a tougher enforcement policy toward homeopathic drugs, saying it would target products posing the greatest safety risks, including those containing potentially harmful ingredients or being marketed for cancer, heart disease and opioid and alcohol addictions.

Homeopathy is based on an 18th-century idea that substances that cause disease symptoms can, in very small doses, cure the same symptoms. Modern medicine, backed up by numerous studies, has disproved the central tenets of homeopathy and shown that the products are worthless at best and harmful at worst.
(Laurie McGinley. FDA takes more aggressive stance toward homeopathic drugs. The Washington Post. December 18, 2017.)

Cessna

Cessna

Three people and a dog were killed — and another dog survived — when a plane crashed in Indiana on Saturday, authorities said.

A single-engine Cessna that was heading to Frederick, Md., from Kansas City, Mo., crashed into a wooded area just after 9 p.m. near Oldenburg in Franklin County, Indiana police said in a news release. Authorities believe the plane caught fire after it crashed.

Three people and a dog were pronounced dead at the scene. Their names have not been released pending family notification.

Another dog survived the crash and was found at a nearby residence. The dog was taken to the veterinarian and treated for its injuries.
(Katherine Lam. Dog survives plane crash in Indiana that kills 3 people, 2nd canine. Fox News. December 17, 2017.)

celibacy

(CNN) — A wide-reaching investigation into child abuse across Australia whose revelations shocked the nation has called for sweeping changes to be made, including recommending an end to mandatory celibacy in the Catholic Church.

The Australian Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse report estimates tens of thousands of children have been abused in Australian institutions, in what the commission described as a "national tragedy."

A total of 189 new recommendations were made by the commissioners to address what they described as a "serious failure" by Australia's institutions to protect its most vulnerable citizens.
(Ben Westcott. Australia child abuse inquiry calls for end to mandatory celibacy for priests. CNN. December 15, 2017.)

charm offensive

South Korea's Moon tries K-Pop and TV stars in China charm offensive

SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korean President Moon Jae-in will unveil an array of TV talent and K-Pop celebrities at events, including a state dinner, in China on Thursday as he attempts to smooth out a year of difficult diplomacy with a star-laden charm offensive.

South Korean celebrities, including some of those accompanying Moon, had been shut out of Chinese television and concert halls as relations cooled between the East Asian neighbours as they faced the threat posed by North Korea’s missile and nuclear programmes.

The thorniest issue was South Korea’s deployment of a controversial U.S. anti-missile system.
(Joyce Lee. South Korea's Moon tries K-Pop and TV stars in China charm offensive. Reuters. December 14, 2017.)

a calculated campaign to use one's personal charm to gain favor or support

President Donald J. Trump is wrapping up a whirlwind tour of Asia, visiting five countries in 12 days. The trip revealed much about Trump’s style of diplomacy – one that focuses more on his personal relationships with world leaders than diplomatic relations between countries.

Both democratic and authoritarian leaders have been wooed by Trump’s charm offensive. He has highlighted his warm feelings toward China’s President Xi Jinping and tweeted that he tries “so hard to be [North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s] friend.”
(Jessica Trisco Darden. Did Trump’s charm offensive work in the Philippines? Huffington Post. November 14, 2017.)

Despite many of its services being blocked in China, Google has chosen Beijing as the location for its first artificial intelligence research center in Asia.

Google (GOOGL) effectively left China in 2010, but the country's 730 million internet users make it too large a market to ignore. The company has made no secret of its desire to find ways to rebuild its presence there.

Opening a high profile AI research center in China is the latest move in Google's charm offensive.

debauchery

A court in Egypt has reportedly jailed for two years a singer who appeared in a music video in her underwear while suggestively eating a banana.

Shaimaa Ahmed, a 25-year-old known professionally as Shyma, was arrested last month after the video sparked outrage in the conservative country.

On Tuesday, she was found guilty of inciting debauchery and publishing an indecent film, local media said.

The video's director was also sentenced to two years in prison in absentia.
(Egypt singer jailed for 'inciting debauchery' in music video. BBC News. December 13, 2017.)

inciting debauchery

daredevil

A daredevil plummeted to his death during a risky stunt near the top of a 62-story building in China, according to new reports.

Wu Yongning, 26, who called himself “China’s First Rooftopper,” plunged from the Huayuan International Centre in Changsha, the capital of Hunan province in central China, on Nov. 8, AsiaWire reported.
(Amanda Woods. Daredevil falls to his death from 62-story building. New York Post. December 1, 2017.)

to the tune of

A bitcoin mining service was hacked to the tune of $64 million this week, underscoring once again how the world of digital currency attracts scammers and thieves.

Such stories can scare off amateur investors who fear bitcoin isn’t just volatile, but that it’s insecure. This isn’t really fair to bitcoin. The reality is bitcoin is secure, and ordinary people can protect it without much effort. The real problem is not everyone understands how bitcoin works, which leads them to make choices that expose them to theft.
(Jeff John Roberts. How Bitcoin Is Stolen: 5 Common Threats. Fortune. December 8, 2017.)

to the tune of

大枚(to the amont of)

informal — used to emphasize a large amount of money

― chillax

chillax

I've hit 10,000 steps! My Fitbit is vibrating and digital fireworks are shooting across the tiny screen on my wrist. The only problem is I haven't even arrived at my office yet.

I hit the gym before I go to work, and think heck, if I've already logged that many steps, why not kick back and chillax the rest of the day? This is the first sign that something is awry on my quest to find out if wearable technology, or wearables, can actually make us healthier.
(Samuel Burke. Body Smart: Can a week of wearables improve your health? CNN. August 14, 2017.)

What's in a name?

What's in a name? For Walmart, it will soon be a little less.

The company, which became the largest retailer in the world with a huge chain of stores, is changing its name to reflect its increasing emphasis on e-commerce.

As of Feb. 1, it will no longer be "Wal-Mart Stores" and will get rid of the hyphen and drop "stores" from its legal name.

“While our legal name is used in a limited number of places, we felt it was best to have a name that was consistent with the idea that you can shop us however you like as a customer,'' Doug McMillon, Walmart's president and CEO, said in a statement. "As time goes on, customers will increasingly just think of and see one Walmart.”
(Charisse Jones. Walmart changes name, dropping 'stores' and hyphen, as it underscores online image. USA Today. December 6, 2017.)

What's in a name?

Cheaters never prosper.

Russia unveiled its uniforms for the upcoming Winter Olympics in South Korea last week, a gesture of “What, me worry?” confidence ahead of Tuesday’s momentous decision by the International Olympic Committee on whether to ban the nation from competition in Pyeongchang because of state-orchestrated doping. Well, the verdict’s in. Russia can start looking for the nearest Goodwill bin.

The IOC has banned Russia from the Games. Russian athletes deemed untainted by doping will be allowed to compete, but only under a neutral flag, not a Russian one. They won’t wear their spiffy new uniforms, instead relegated to outfits branded with the acronym “OAR,” Olympic Athlete from Russia. If they win a medal, they’ll hear the Olympic anthem, not Russia’s. Russia’s medal count at Pyeongchang can already be put into the record books: zero.

It’s a punishment unprecedented in the history of the Olympics, and one that IOC officials said fits the unprecedented scale of Russia’s cheating.
(Editorial: How do you say, 'Cheaters Never Prosper' in Russian? Chicago Tribune. December 5, 2017.)

Cheaters Never Prosper

migraine

New, long-acting drugs may hold hope for millions of people who often suffer migraines. Studies of two of these medicines, given as shots every month or so, found they cut the frequency of the notoriously painful and disabling headaches.

The drugs are the first preventive medicines developed specifically for migraines. They work by interfering with a substance involved in modifying nerve signaling and progression of pain and symptoms.

“It's a whole new direction” for treatment and an important advance for people who don't want to take or aren't helped by the daily pills sometimes used now to prevent recurrences, said Dr. Andrew Hershey, neurology chief at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.
(Help for migraines. The Associated Press. December 4, 2017.)

wait in the wings

Today, the Google Assistant got some cool new tricks, including the ability to find and recommend local services like a plumber, electrician, or locksmith. It’s a neat trick at first glance, but there may be a giant problem waiting in the wings.

In a blog post explaining how the new feature will work, Google lays out how the recommendations are generated:

In many cities the Google Assistant will suggest providers that have been prescreened by Google and companies like HomeAdvisor and Porch so you can feel confident they’re ready to take on the job.

That sounds great! But what about the specific cities where Google hasn’t specifically screened companies?

And if you’re in a city that doesn’t have any available guaranteed or screened providers, you’ll still get an answer from the Assistant with other nearby results.
(Chris Mills. Google Assistant now recommends a plumber or locksmith, and it’s a disaster in the making. BGR. November 30, 2017.)

there may be a giant problem waiting in the wings

朗報 ー ammunition for

A new study has some ammunition for dog people everywhere.

The research, published in the journal Frontiers of Neuroanatomy, says dogs may be brainier than cats. That is, dogs have cerebral cortexes with twice as many neurons — the brain cells responsible for thought, planning and behavior – compared to cats. Scientists have associated neuron density with overall cognitive ability – i.e. intelligence.

For the study, a group of researchers led by Suzana Herculano-Houzel, an associate professor of psychology and biological sciences at Vanderbilt University, examined the neuronal density and brain sizes of various carnivorans, a class of mammals that includes many predators – along with some omnivores and and a few herbivores.
(Jamie Ducharme. Dogs Are Brainier Than Cats, New Study Finds. People. November 30, 2017.)

A new study has some ammunition for dog people

Makers of the world’s first ‘smart condom’ have finally revealed a look at the 'game-changing' new device, which boasts the ability to detect STIs, assess performance, and even calculate how many calories you burned during sex.

The $80 i.Con Smart Condom isn’t actually a condom – instead, the photos reveal it’s a ring-shaped wearable that mimics the style of another popular sex toy to sit at the base of the penis.

While there are potential benefits, the smartphone-connected device has sparked concerns that it could be used to spy on a person’s intimate moments.
(The smart condom that can rate your performance in the bedroom (and tell you if you have an STI). Daily Mail. November 28, 2017.)

(Online Etymology Dictionary)

Victoria has become the first state in the country to legalise assisted dying for the terminally ill, with MPs voting to give patients the right to request a lethal drug to end their lives from mid-2019.

After more than 100 hours of debate across both houses of Parliament and two demanding all-night sittings, Lower House MPs ratified the Andrews Government's amended bills.

The bill will now go to the Governor for royal assent.

Premier Daniel Andrews, who came to support euthanasia after the death of his father last year, paid tribute to colleagues, including Health Minister Jill Hennessy, for their work on the bill.

"I'm proud today that we have put compassion right at the centre of our parliamentary and our political process," he said.
(Jean Edwards. Euthanasia: Victoria becomes the first Australian state to legalise voluntary assisted dying. ABC News. November 29, 2017.)

euthanasia

Bitcoin is showing no signs of slowing down, blowing past $9,000 less than a week after topping $8,000 and now quickly closing in on five big figures.

The price of the largest cryptocurrency by market value is soaring as it gains greater mainstream attention despite warnings of a bubble in what not everyone agrees is an asset. From Wall Street executives to venture capitalists, observers have been weighing in, with some more skeptical than others. Bitcoin has climbed more than 40 percent over the past two weeks.
(Bitcoin Guns For $10,000 as Cryptocurrency Mania Intensifies. Bloomberg. ovember 27, 2017.)

Bitcoin Guns For $10,000...

tightrope

Pope Francis walks religious, diplomatic tightrope in Myanmar

(CNN) — Pope Francis left Rome on Sunday night and will become the first pope to visit Myanmar when he arrives Monday.

The world's most high-profile Christian is about to take center stage in a staunchly Buddhist country accused of horrifying acts of brutality against its Rohingya Muslim minority.

The Pope has previously decried violence against the Rohingya, calling them his persecuted "brothers and sisters."

Experts warn that this trip will require balancing a uniquely complicated set of humanitarian, diplomatic and religious questions. Even his own cardinal has advised the Pope to steer clear of the word Rohingya for fear of stalling his message of reconciliation before it has even begun.
(Ben Westcott. Pope Francis walks religious, diplomatic tightrope in Myanmar. CNN. November 27, 2017.)

Pope Francis walks religious, diplomatic tightrope in Myanmar

armistice

(CNN) Dramatic video showing a North Korean soldier fleeing across the border into South Korea while being shot at by his former comrades was released by the United Nations Command Wednesday.

The video's release marks the first time the American-led UN Command has disclosed security footage of a defection across the heavily fortified demilitarized zone (DMZ) that divides North and South Korea, said Hochong Song, a public affairs officer for US Forces Korea.

By firing across the DMZ at the defector, North Korean soldiers violated the Korean War armistice, said the UN Command, which oversees the 64-year-old ceasefire agreement. One North Korean soldier also crossed the military demarcation line (MDL) -- another violation of the armistice that paused the Korean War in 1953 -- said Col. Chad Carroll, US Forces Korea public affairs director. A peace treaty formally ending the war has never been signed.
(Joshua Berlinger. Dramatic video shows North Korean soldier's escape across border. CNN. November 22, 2017.)

Black Friday is still a couple of days away, but the Trump administration already has handed out gifts to the telecom industry.

The Republican-controlled Federal Communications Commission on Wednesday took the wraps off its rollback of net neutrality rules, which it will finalize next month and give internet service providers more control over what you see online.

At its heart, net neutrality is about guaranteeing a level playing field for all online services and content providers. It ensures that broadband providers such as phone and cable companies can’t give preferential treatment to anyone — their own streaming-video service, say, over Netflix or Amazon Prime Video.
(David Razarus. Trump administration, in a gift to telecom firms, is pulling the plug on net neutrality. Los Angeles Times. November 22, 207.)

SAN FRANCISCO — In November 2016, Uber executives faced an expensive — and risky — decision.

Two hackers had stolen data about the company’s riders and drivers — including phone numbers, email addresses and names — from a third-party server, putting the personal data of more than 57 million people at risk. The hackers approached Uber and demanded $100,000 to delete their copy of the data, according to several current and former employees, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the details are private.

Uber acquiesced to the demands. Under the orders of Travis Kalanick, who was then its chief executive, and Joe Sullivan, the chief security officer, the company paid the ransom.
(Uber Discloses Data Breach, Kept Secret for a Year, Affecting 57 Million Accounts. New York Times. November 21, 2017.)

acquiesce

quarter-life crisis

Adulting is a struggle.

A new LinkedIn survey of 2,000 millennials found that 72% of young professionals ages 25 to 33 said they’ve been through a quarter-life crisis, or a period of self doubt and insecurity causing them to question their life choices, relationships and career paths.

The main factors people grappled with were finding a job they’re passionate about (57%) and the pressure to buy property (57%). Both priorities were much higher than finding love (46%). Women (61%) in particular are more likely to be unsure of what their next career move is compared to 56% of men.
(Jeanette Settembre. Majority of millennials claim to be in a quarter-life crisis. New York Post. November 20, 2017.)

― stagehand

Almost 50 years after man walked on the moon, the “giant leap for mankind” is under the microscope once again – with conspiracy theorists convinced they have proof one of the moon landings was fake.

A picture allegedly taken in December 1972 of the final Apollo 17 moon mission has been shared online, and shows what one YouTuber believes is the reflection of a “stagehand” in the helmet of one of the astronauts.

The photo, uploaded to YouTube this week by a user named Streetcap1 is entitled “Reflection in a Visor,” and Streetcap1 suggests this casts doubt onto whether the 1972 moon landing, in particular, was staged.
(Harriet Sinclair. 'Fake' Apollo Moon Landing Photo Claims To Show Proof The Mission Was A Hoax. Newsweek. November 19, 2017.)

better off

Parents would be better off raising their children in European, Asian or Australian cities, according to a Wednesday report.

Real-estate technology startup Homeday evaluated hundreds of cities across the globe on 15 metrics that matter to families, including housing availability and cost, school quality, safety, parental leave laws, healthcare, pollution, green spaces, activities for kids and general affordability.

The result: America isn’t first. Not even close. In fact, the first US city to make the list is Seattle, at No. 31.

Topping the list of best cities for families are Copenhagen, Oslo, Zurich, Stockholm and Hamburg.
(Hana R. Alberts. US cities are terrible for families. USA Today. November 16, 2017.)

For most clients, I still believe they are better off buying a home in established neighborhoods, because such are more likely to be desirable in a recession as in our current booming market.
(Chicago Sun Times, 2000)

He is far better off now than he was ten years ago.(10

up and running

Google Docs, the free word processing software from the Internet giant, went down Wednesday, but is now back up and running.

"Sorry for the disruption," Google said in a tweet. "Thanks again for your patience with us." The program was down for just under an hour, according to Google.

Google Docs has become the writing program of choice for many of today's office and freelance workers, as well as students, who can collaborate with others using the Web-based program.

College football player expelled after sucker-punching coach

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A Tennessee State University football player has been dismissed from the team and expelled from the school for hitting a coach.

TSU athletics director Teresa Phillips told The Tennessean that 22-year-old senior defensive end Latrelle Lee, of Dothan, Alabama, was kicked off the team and expelled Monday.

Videos show Lee hitting head strength coach T.J. Greenstone twice in the head, knocking him to the turf on the sideline during the Saturday night game against Southeast Missouri at Hale Stadium.
(New York Post. November 14, 2017.)

Merriam-Webster Dictionary

to punch (a person) suddenly without warning and often without apparent provocation

President Trump on Monday attended the opening ceremony of the summit for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Manila, Philippines, where Trump initially struggled during a group photo with world leaders ahead of a one-on-one meeting with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte.

The world leaders then posed for a photo, with Trump standing next to Duterte.

Each leader placed his right hand over his left hand as part of the customary ASEAN handshake. Trump had a “false start” with the handshake before doing it properly, according to the pool report.

Photos of Trump doing the handshake quickly went viral.
(Jaqueline Thomsen. Group handshake briefly stumps Trump. The Hill. November 12, 2017.)

group handshake

dwarf

A Mexican mother whose 10-month-old son weighs the same as a nine-year-old has spoken out about his mystery condition.

Isabel Pantoja, 24, from the Pacific coast state of Colima, said at first she assumed the baby Luis's growth was down to the fact that 'I had good breast milk' but now she is desperately worried for her son.

At birth Luis weighed 3.5kg (8lbs), about the same as his brother Mario, who is almost three but is now dwarfed by his baby brother.
(The Daily Mail. November 12, 2017.)

his brother Mario, who is almost three but is now dwarfed by his baby brother

The two couples also teamed up with others to create the Breakthrough Prizes for scientists who make discoveries that extend human life. Its $3 million payouts - given to six scientists each year - dwarf similar awards, including the Nobel Prizes, currently about $925,000.

slash

This swimsuit model-slash-security guard could kick your ass

Growing up in Cincinnati, Iyonna Fairbanks knew she wanted to pose in front of the camera from a young age. She looked up to ’90s supermodels like Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford.

“I love [modeling], and I’m so passionate about it,” Fairbanks, 25, tells The Post.

Now she’s one step closer to her dream, after being named an open-casting-call finalist for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. But her life hasn’t always been so glamorous — she still has a 9-to-5 job as a security guard at a chemical plant in her hometown.
(Christian Gollayan. This swimsuit model-slash-security guard could kick your ass. New York Post. November 5, 2017.)

swimsuit model-slash-security guard

swimsuit model/security guard

And now we're going to get an exclusive look inside the small box of which magician slash contortionist slash performance artist David Blaine is going to step tomorrow for 44 days.

If you’re trekking in the Austrian Alps there’s a number of things you’d probably expect to see, including snow, rocks, and precious little vegetation. Hikers have gotten an eyeful of all that and much more in recent days, as someone has taken the liberty of installing a huge wooden phallus on the top of the Otscher peak, and nobody has claimed responsibility for it.

The odd tribute to the male reproductive organ was first spotted by a longtime hiker who declared it to be the peak’s new mascot, though the intentions of its builder remain unknown. At a height of over 6,200 feet, the peak isn’t exactly a leisurely climb, and carrying a man-sized (as in, the height of a man, not the size a man would- you know what, nevermind) dong to the top would be a bit of a challenge.

The area is popular among skiers and recreational hikers alike, so there’s no shortage of potential culprits who could have left the big wooden dingus behind, but that doesn’t bring us any closer to finding the identity of the prankster.
(Mike Wehner. Wood mysteriously erected. New York Post. November 8, 2017.)

cinched waist

In preparing her wardrobe for her official state visit to Japan, Melania Trump heeded common advice about proper business attire in that Asian country, opting for simple, elegant and sedate skirts and coats for meetings with Japanese officials, including with Emperor Akihito and his wife Empress Michiko.

For her second day in Japan, Melania Trump and President Trump met with Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko at the Imperial Palace. For that tradition-bound occasion, the first lady wore a navy mid-length Dior dress, with angel sleeves and cinched waste (sic) that revealed only a flash of ankle.
(Melania Trump, unlike Ivanka Trump, sticks to tradition in her Japan wardrobe. The Mercury News. November 7, 2017.)

cinched waist

Japanese leader Shinzo Abe plays the role of Trump’s loyal sidekick
(The Washington Post, November 6, 2017.)

sidekick

a person closely associated with another as a subordinate or partner

manila folder

manila folder

Holding manila folders filled with pages of her handwritten reports, Dr. Anna Konopka insisted her system for keeping track of her patients' medical conditions and various prescriptions works fine.

But the New Hampshire Board of Medicine disagrees. It is challenging the 84-year-old New London physician's record keeping, prescribing practices and medical decision making.

Part of their concern is her remedial computer skills, which prevent her from accessing and using the state's mandatory electronic drug monitoring program. The program, which the state signed onto in 2014, requires prescribers of opioids to register in an effort reduce overdoses.

Konopka surrendered her license last month and went to court Friday in an effort to regain it.
(Michael Casey. Doctor fights to regain license lost to lax computer skills. ABC News. November 3, 2017.)

hygge

The Imperial Hotel Tokyo is holding the “Nordic Bliss” Denmark Fair through Nov. 30. Supported by the Danish embassy, guests can experience “hygge with Danish food and culture, while commemorating 150 years of diplomatic relations between Denmark and Japan.
(Experience the coziness of Denmark. The Japan Times. November 2, 2017.)

Hygge, loosely defined as cozy or charming, is a lifestyle in Denmark and other Nordic countries and is a way to enjoy life. Guests can experience The Imperial Hotel Tokyo’s unique take on hygge during the fair.

laughingstock

The White House on Wednesday flatly denied that President Donald Trump had ever called the American criminal justice system "a joke and a laughingstock," just hours after Trump said precisely that during a televised Cabinet meeting.

"We need quick justice and we need strong justice — much quicker and much stronger than we have right now — because what we have right now is a joke, and it's a laughingstock," Trump said at the meeting.

The president's remark followed a terror attack in New York City on Tuesday that killed eight people. The suspect, Sayfullo Saipov, was shot on the scene and quickly taken into custody. Authorities later found items that indicate the attack was inspired by ISIS.
(Christina Wilkie. Hours after Trump calls US justice system 'a laughingstock,' White House denies he ever did. CNBC. November 1, 2017.)

be thrown for a loop

Google Docs

Google Docs threw some users for a loop on Tuesday when the service suddenly locked them out of their documents for violating Google’s terms of service. The weird part? The documents were innocuous. The alerts were caused by a glitch, but they served as a stark reminder that not much is truly private in the cloud.

“This shows that Google is using advanced machine learning and other A.I. technologies to examine vast amounts of information in near real time,” Dana Gardner, a leading cloud expert and a principal analyst at Interarbor Solutions, said on Tuesday.
(Maya Salam. Google Docs Glitch That Locked Out Users Underscores Privacy Concerns. New York Times. October 31, 2017.)

Google Docs threw some users for a loop

Don't OD on Black Licorice This Halloween, FDA Warns

MONDAY, Oct. 30, 2017 (HealthDay News) -- Black licorice candy may be more trick than treat for adults, according to a new U.S. Food and Drug Administration warning.

For people 40 and older, eating 2 ounces of black licorice a day for at least two weeks could trigger an irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia) and other troubles, the agency warned in advance of Halloween.

Black licorice contains a compound called glycyrrhizin, derived from licorice root. Glycyrrhizin can cause potassium levels in the body to fall, which can lead to abnormal heart rhythms as well as high blood pressure, swelling, lethargy and congestive heart failure, the FDA said.
(Health Day. October 30, 2017.)

overdose

flip off

flip off

The president left Trump National Golf Club at 3:12 p.m. after spending the day there on the edge of the Potomac River.

A thick column of black SUVs escorted Trump past two pedestrians, a Guardian reporter wrote in a pool report — “one of whom gave a thumbs down sign.”

“Then it overtook a female cyclist, wearing a white top and cycling helmet, who responded by giving the middle finger.”

The cyclist was photographed for posterity. So was an “IMPEACH” sign held aloft outside the golf club that day.

On Twitter, Voice of America reporter Steve Herman offered his account as eyewitness to the following events:

“The cyclist flipped off @POTUS a second time when the motorcade halted at the traffic light,” he wrote. “No, we do not know her name.”
(Avi Selk. A cyclist flipped off Trump’s motorcade and entered the annals of presidential protests. Washington Post. October 29, 2017.)

An online brouhaha has erupted over women's shoes. Well, not real shoes. Emoji shoes. The red emoji stiletto, to be specific. The semi-controversy was sparked by public-relations expert Florie Hutchinson's campaign to persuade the Unicode Emoji Subcommittee (yes, that's a real thing) to add a ballet flat emoji. Why should women be limited to a sexy red stiletto — the only official "women's" shoe currently available in emoji-land? As Hutchinson argued in her proposal, "A flat shoe would help pave the way to a more gender nonsexualized pictorial representation of the footwear category."
(Renee Engeln. Commentary: Why care about a shoe emoji? Because women's fashion restricts how we live our lives. Chicago Tribune. October 26, 2017.)

red emoji stiletto

stiletto heel

dot the i’s and cross the t’s

dot the i’s and cross the t’s

If someone dots the i’s and cross the t’s, they add the final minor details to a piece of work, plan, or arrangement.
(Collins Cobuild Dictionary of Idioms)

アルファベットのIの小文字(i)は点(ドット)で、Tの小文字(t)はクロスする、ということですが、以前に取り上げた、”mind your p’s and q’s”に似た表現です。

Unless all the i’s are dotted and the t’s are crossed, a contract is not likely to be enforced.
(Collins Cobuild Dictionary of Idioms)

reel ~ into

ALBANY, N.Y. — New York has added electronic cigarettes to its indoor smoking ban, making it illegal to use the devices in bars, restaurants and most workplaces.

While New York City and several other localities had already prohibited the use of e-cigarettes in areas covered by the smoking ban, the new statewide rules will provide consistency, according to Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who signed the bill into law Monday.

“These products are marketed as a healthier alternative to cigarettes, but the reality is they also carry long-term risks to the health of users and those around them,” Cuomo said. “This measure closes another dangerous loophole in the law, creating a stronger, healthier New York for all.”
(David Klepper. Gov. Cuomo signs bill banning e-cigarettes in NY workplaces. The Washington Post. October 24, 2017.)

The new law has the backing of the American Cancer Society and the American Lung Association. Jeff Seyler, executive vice president of the American Lung Association’s northeast region, said the new law sends a signal that e-cigarettes are not safe — and could help prevent some young people from getting hooked on nicotine.

“E-cigarettes are proving to be just another tool reeling them into a dangerous and often lifetime of addiction to nicotine,” Seyler said.
(ibid.)

just another tool reeling them into a dangerous and often lifetime of addiction to nicotine

In the 1980s and 1990s, the Mega-Cities Project reports that the city grew by more than 300,000 persons per year, despite the 1981 world recession, which sent Lagos "reeling into debt and runaway inflation."
(The Environmental Magazine, 2005)

So after that divorce I was reeling, right into the arms of Carlos, a hot-tempered, drunken son-of-a-bitch who got me pregnant and then left me.
(Biligual Review, 1999)

The Reagan administration then did an about-face, demanding that Noriega leave office, but its strategy left the Panamanian economy reeling into a tailspin while Noriega reveled in his defiance of the northern colossus.
(Journal of Internamerican Studies & World Affairs, 1991.)

The world's economies -- indeed, the world economy itself -- would reel into a deep depression, with all its inevitable social consequences.
(National Review, 1990)

pull one's weight

Aussie Blokes Still Aren't Pulling Their Weight At Home, Census Shows

Women carrying the load.

Aussie blokes still aren't doing at much housework as women, census data shows.

The latest data released from the 2016 census found women are still doing more work around the house.

Over half of employed men did no or fewer than five hours per week of unpaid domestic work (60 per cent) compared with a third of employed women (36 per cent).
(Aussie Blokes Still Aren't Pulling Their Weight At Home, Census Shows. Triple M Melbourne. October 23, 2017.)

Aussie Blokes Still Aren't Pulling Their Weight At Home

― Takotsubo cardiomyopathy

Pets are such a huge part of our lives that it could be a heartbreaking experience if they die. That was what a Texas woman went through when the death of her pet dog resulted in a case of “broken heart syndrome,” a condition more formally known as Takotsubo cardiomyopathy.

As explained in a case study published this week in the New England Journal of Medicine, Camp Woods, Texas resident Joanie Simpson, 62, was dealing with the recent death of her dog, Meha, when she woke up one morning suffering from chest and back pain. At first, Simpson thought that she was having a heart attack, but doctors ultimately determined that she was literally a “heartbroken” — she was suffering from Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, or broken heart syndrome.

According to the New York Daily News, the condition has some of the same symptoms as a heart attack.
(Lorenzo Tanos. Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy: Woman Suffers From Broken Heart Syndrome After Death Of Dog. Inquistr. October 22, 2017.)

"Takotsubo cardiomyopathy"

Evidence from an x-ray, echocardiogram (ultrasound image), or other imaging technique that there are abnormal movements in the walls of the left ventricle. The most common abnormality in takotsubo cardiomyopathy — the one that gives the disorder its name — is ballooning of the lower part of the left ventricle (apex). During contraction (systole), this bulging ventricle resembles a tako-tsubo, a pot used by Japanese fishermen to trap octopuses. Another term for the disorder is apical ballooning syndrome.
(Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (broken-heart syndrome). Harvard Womens Medical Watch. April 9, 2016.)

Lothario

Lotharios who smoke and go down on their girlfriends are more likely to get a rare mouth and throat cancer.

Smokers who have had more than five sexual partners are at greater risk of getting the cancer triggered by the human papilloma virus.

But scientist reassure that only 0.7 percent of men will ever develop HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer in their lifetimes.

The risk was much lower among women, those who did not smoke, and those who had less than five oral sex partners in their lifetimes.
(Tony Whitfield. Oral sex can cause mouth and throat cancer: study. New York Post. October 19, 2017.)

― body double

In the beginning, first lady Melania Trump was mocked for her absence from the White House. Then she was criticized for her clothes and her shoes. On Wednesday some conspiracy theorists on Twitter were convinced she wasn't even Melania — she's a body double!

Soon after a tweet asserting this was posted, the reaction tweets were off to the races as jokesters, paranoids, gif-makers and Trump supporters vied with one another to make the case, knock it down or just have a good time posting clever pictures and videos.

More proof that startling numbers of people on Twitter have way too much time on their hands? For the record, there is no Melania Trump body double, but that didn't stop the blathering about it.
(Maria Puente. Twitter goes bananas speculating Melania Trump might have a 'body double.' USA Today. October 18, 2017.)

body double

a person who substitutes for a star for the filming of a scene that involves shots of the body rather than the face
(Collins English Dictionary)

pigskin

The number of pigskin fans in the US plummeted from 67 percent in 2012 to 57 percent this year, according to a Gallup poll taken Oct. 10-11.

It was the biggest drop in support of any sport and follows the heated controversy over football players kneeling in protest during the National Anthem.

Republicans and independent voters led the defectors — down 15 and 12 points respectively. Backing from Democrats fell just 3 points.

“The anthem situation is the latest, but not the only, controversy that has dogged professional football. In recent years, the NFL has come under fire for its handling of domestic violence cases involving players and its response to research on the effects of concussions on brain health among former players,” the Gallup analysis said.
(Carl Canpanile. Americans are passing on pro football: poll. New York Post. October 13, 2017.)

A man and a woman were charged with indecent exposure and public intoxication after police in Clarksville, Tenn., said they attempted to have sex in a portable toilet outside of O'Connors Irish Pub on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2017.

"It was clear that the two subjects had been fornicating in the restroom," according to the warrant.
(Couple caught having sex in bar bathroom, then in portable potty. USA Today. October 12, 2017.)

...having sex in a bathroom...

... had been fornicating in the restroom...

The high school cheerleading coach who forced his students into splits will not be charged with a crime, the Denver prosecutor said.

A number of officials at East High School in Denver came under fire in August when a disturbing video circulated showing cheerleaders repeatedly being pushed into splits.

An incoming high school freshman screamed in pain and asked the coach, Ozell Williams, to “please stop” in one video. Her morther said she suffered injuries to her leg from the forced exercise.

The leaked video caused a public uproar. The school’s principal retired and the athletic director resigned after the video was leaked; Williams was fired.
(Coach who forced cheerleaders into splits will not be charged with a crime. Fox News. October 15, 2017.)

watermelon

A probie Detroit firefighter was axed for “offensive and racially insensitive” behavior for gifting a watermelon to his new firehouse, which is mostly made up of black members, according to a report.

The rookie, 41-year-old Robert Pattison, brought the fruit topped with a pink bow to the Engine 55 firehouse on Sept. 30 – and quickly offended some African-American firefighters, FOX 2 reported.

He was fired after the incident, which he claimed was not meant to be offensive, according to the news outlet.

“There is zero tolerance for discriminatory behavior inside the Detroit Fire Department,” Fire Commissioner Eric Jones said in a statement, adding that Pattison “engaged in unsatisfactory work behavior which was deemed offensive and racially insensitive to members of the Detroit Fire Department.

Boston Herald apologizes for Obama cartoon after backlash

Washington (CNN) -- The Boston Herald and its cartoonist apologized Wednesday for a cartoon that quickly drew criticism on social media for being racist.

A satire on the recent news that an intruder got farther into the White House last month than previously known, the cartoon depicts the intruder sitting in President Obama's bathtub, asking him if he has tried the "watermelon flavored toothpaste."

Critics quickly pounced on the watermelon aspect of the cartoon, arguing the cartoonist was playing off a stereotype that African Americans are particularly fond of the fruit.
(Ashley Kilough. Boston Herald apologizes for Obama cartoon after backlash. CNN. October 1, 2014.)

bezel

bezel

Microsoft almost beat Apple, Samsung, and Google to the punch when it comes to bezel-less, full-screen smartphone displays. Windows Central happens to have in its possession a rare Windows Phone prototype device, codenamed “Vela,” that was an early iteration of what would eventually become the uninspired Lumia 435.

The device sports the now nearly ubiquitous edge-to-edge display style now being used by Apple’s iPhone X, the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Note 8, and Google’s new Pixel 2 XL.
(Nick Statt. Microsoft almost made a bezel-less Windows Phone in 2014, and it looked great. The Verge. October 9, 2017.)

beat ~ to the punch

Amazon beats Google to the punch and launches the Echo line of speakers in India

After Amazon got its Prime Video service in India last year, it's now time for the Alexa-enabled Echo speakers . The e-commerce giant launched the speakers in India but it's only available on invitation basis only.

Amazon's Alexa and its Echo speakers have been a massive success story for Amazon. It boasts of the largest ecosystem of third-party services, even more than Google's own Google Home and Google Assistant. Incidentally, Amazon launched the speakers on the same day Google is slated to hold its hardware event where it is rumoured to launch the new Pixel phones along with a Google Home Mini speakers, which is supposedly much like the Echo Dot.

Google is said to be planning to be launching its Home line of speakers in India in Q1 of 2018.
(Subhrojit Mallick. Amazon beats Google to the punch and launches the Echo line of speakers in India. Gizmodo. October 4, 2017.)

Amazon beats Google to the punch

gurney

PETALING JAYA, Malaysia -- A Malaysian airport security video shows the poisoned half brother of North Korea's leader apparently unconscious on a gurney and being pumped with oxygen by medical attendants as they wait for an elevator to take him to an ambulance.

The video reviewed by The Associated Press on Monday shows what may be Kim Jong Nam's final recorded moments of life after he fell perilously ill at the international airport in Kuala Lumpur on Feb. 13. It emerged as the trial of two women accused of killing Kim by smearing VX nerve agent on his face at the behest of suspected North Korean agents is underway at Malaysia's High Court.
(Airport security video shows North Korean motionless on gurney after attack. CBS News. October 9, 2017.)

falling out

Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump and outgoing Sen. Bob Corker launched into a Twitter spat Sunday morning in a major public falling out, making the Tennessean the latest senior Republican lawmaker to openly criticize Trump over his statements online and off.

Trump tweeted Sunday morning in a series of posts attacking Corker that he denied the senator's request for an endorsement -- a claim denied by Corker's chief of staff, Todd Womack, later in the day.
(Trump trashes outgoing Republican senator in public falling out. CNN. October 8, 2017.)

A public falling out

Merriam-Webster Dictionaryでは、

to cut off relations over a quarrel

And this year's Nobel Prize for literature goes to... someone who's not Haruki Murakami again. The BBC delves into the dejected world of his long-suffering fans whose sole desire - to see the Japanese writer win the prize - is thwarted every year.
(No Nobel for Haruki Murakami, so 'Harukists' stay dejected. BBC News. October 6, 2017.)

taken to task

CONCORD, Mass. - A Massachusetts bakery's granola may be made with love, but federal officials say it souldn't be listed as an ingredient on the package, and it had several violations other than its listing of love.

Nashoba Brook Bakery, in Concord, was taken to task by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for listing "love" as an ingredient on its Nashoba Granola label. In a letter posted this week on the FDA website, the agency said federal regulations require that ingredients "must be listed by their common or usual name."
(FDA: Backer had oter violations besides 'love'label. WCVB 5. October 5, 2017.)

taken to task

take a person to task for...

out of whack

WASHINGTON – While President Trump toured Puerto Rico on Tuesday to praise his team's response to Hurricane Maria, some of his critics heard other things — including a joke about the expense of the effort and praise for the fact that only 16 people have died since the deadly storm two weeks ago.

"Sixteen people certified – 16 people versus in the thousands," Trump said during a briefing with Puerto Rican officials; he added that while "every death is a horror," the devastation has not been "a real catastrophe" on the same scale of Hurricane Katrina, which killed some 1,800 people in New Orleans in 2005.

Citing the logistical and financial challenges of the federal disaster response on the island, Trump quipped: "Now I hate to tell you, Puerto Rico, but you've thrown our budget a little out of whack, but you're throwing our budget a little out of whack because we've spent a lot of money on Puerto Rico. And that's fine; we saved a lot of lives."
(David Jackson. Trump praises Puerto Rico recovery, but critics assail comments on budget and death toll. USA Today. October 3, 2017.)

Puerto Rico, but you've thrown our budget a little out of whack

(Puerto Rico) thrown our budget a little out of whack

Repug

A CBS legal executive who said she had no sympathy for the victims killed in Las Vegas because they were “country music fans” — and, therefore likely Republican — has reportedly been fired.

Hayley Getfman-Gold posted the ugly comments on social media about Sunday’s massacre in a conversation over gun control.

“If they wouldn’t do anything when children were murdered I have no hope that Repugs will ever do the right thing,” she wrote on Facebook. “I’m actually not even sympathetic bc country music fans often are Republican gun toters.”

CBS promptly canned her.
(Linda Massarela. CBS exec fired for unsympathetic Vegas massacre post. New York Post. October 2, 2017.)

Repug(s)

pet peeve

WORKING as a flight attendant is not nearly as glamorous as people think.

Flight attendants are at the beck and call of rude passengers, they clean up the rubbish we dump in the aisles, they have to deal with the messes we leave in the bathrooms and they are forced to bear witness to the disgusting things we do during our flights.

And there’s one gross thing passengers do all the time that flight attendants particularly hate.

Annette Long, a flight attendant with 13 years of airline experience, spoke to Business Insider about her biggest pet peeve in the sky.

“We’ve seen people clipping toe nails,” she said.

“It’s very gross and you can’t make them stop. And it’s not an infrequent thing, believe it or not.”
(Gross thing passengers do that flight attendants hate the most. News.com.au. October 2, 2017.)

pet peeve
