もうクリスマス！？ ― grinch

早いもので10月が終わり、今日から11月です。週末大阪に滞在していたのですが、繁華街の売り場でクリスマス用品が売られているのを見て、もうクリスマスシーズンかと半ば呆れました。

当ブログでも度々クリスマスシーズンに因む表現を取り上げてきたところですので、クリスマス商戦の早さを嘆いても今更なのですが、アメリカも日本も状況は変わりません。

With the holiday falling on a Sunday this year, lots of students are expected to remain in class until the holiday weekend, which could discourage travel to visit relatives. Airlines are bracing for coal in their December stockings that might not be redeemed even in January.

Marty St. George, JetBlue’s executive vice president for commercial and planning, told investment analysts Tuesday that December revenue could suffer 3 percentage points compared to 2015.

今年のクリスマスは日曜日になるのですが、そのせいで航空会社の売り上げに影響があるそうです。平日がクリスマスの場合に見込まれるフライト予約が少なくなってしまうことが原因のようですが、確かに航空会社にとっては頭の痛い話でしょう。

さて、冒頭に、


The Grinch is stealing Christmas


と出てきますが、"Grinch"とは何のことかご存知でしょうか？

辞書にも出てきますが、"Grinch"とはTheodor Geiselの童話"How the Grinch Stole Christmas"（1957）に出てくる主人公の名前で、童話のタイトルにある通り、クリスマスを台無しにしようと目論んだ張本人です。

この童話を読んだことはありませんのでよく知りませんが、Merriam-Websterの語源解説によればGrinchは最終的に改悛するというストーリーにも関わらず、他人の幸せや喜びをスポイルするという負の側面だけが残ってしまったようです。
