FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – A 911 dispatch center in Virginia is under investigation after a man died when no one responded to his call.

心不全を患っていた男性が発作で救急車を呼ぼうと電話したようですが、コールセンターとうまく繋がらず、助けを求めながらも得られずして死亡した、という記事内容です。

電話が繋がらなかった訳ではありません。繋がりはしたのですが、センター側の担当者は雑音しか聞こえないことを以って、"pocket call"と見做し、コールバックしなかったようです。

"pocket call"とは何でしょうか？

これは、ポケットなどに入れている携帯電話が勝手に通話状態になってしまうことを指しています。経験されたことのある人も多いのではないでしょうか。

"pocket dialing"、"butt call"などとも言われます。
