peg the number

Microsoft today pegged the number of Windows 10 devices at 350 million, an increase of about 50 million since early May, the last time it publicized the new operating system's uptake.

"We'd like to say a special thank you to each of you who have upgraded to Windows 10," wrote Yusuf Mehdi, the marketing chief of the Windows and devices group, as he announced the new milestone in a post to a company blog.
(Gregg Keizer. Microsoft declares 350M devices now on Windows 10. Computer World. June 29, 2016.)

pegged the number of Windows 10 devices at 350 million

peg the number of A at B

Other surveys have pegged the number of people who are chronically homeless at about 4,500.
(Orange County Register. 2015.)

The railroad association pegs the cost of needed upgrades at $148 billion.
(Atlanta Journal Constitution. 2008.)

dogfight

An artificial intelligence software program that recently beat a US Air Force fighter pilot in a combat simulation requires so little computing power that it could run on a Raspberry Pi, according to its creators.

A team of computer scientists and aerospace experts at the University of Cincinnati developed the AI algorithm, which participated in a simulated dogfight with retired Air Force Colonel Gene Lee.
(Tom Brant. AI Program Wins Dogfight Against USAF Fighter Pilot. PC Magazine. June 28, 2016.)

An aerial battle between fighter planes
(American Heritage Dictionary)

トランプ氏の変節 ― pivot to the center

(CNN) — Donald Trump may be finally gearing up to do what many Republican leaders have hoped: soften his rhetoric and pivot to the center.

He hasn't done that yet. But there are growing signs that the presumptive Republican nominee is aiming to make his campaign more palatable to a general election audience.

His campaign is putting the finishing touches on a policy memo that would change his proposed ban on Muslim immigration to the United States. Instead of focusing the ban on Muslims, Trump would ban immigrants coming from countries with known terrorism links, training and equipment.
(Jeremy Diamond. Is Donald Trump softening his tone? CNN. June 28, 2016.)

pivot to the center

"He (=Donald Trump)'s shown his true (and abhorrent) colors," hedge-fund manager Whitney Tilson of Kase Capital wrote in an email he sent out to 3,000 people in the investment community earlier this month. "A month or so ago, one could have argued that he was just playing a role during the primaries, pandering to the far right, angry whites, etc. to win the nomination, but then, having secured it, would cleverly pivot back to the center and position himself as a pragmatic, business-oriented guy and stop whipping up hatred toward just about everybody except white men."
(Michel Celarier. Who are the Wall Street titans backing Donald Trump? June 27, 2016.)

sterling

Sterling stayed under siege on Monday, holding above a 31-year low against the dollar, with sentiment distinctly sour after Britain opted to exit the European Union, triggering shockwaves across global markets.

The euro was also under pressure, pulled down by sterling, as Brexit clouded the future of the European Union. Safe-haven currencies like the yen and the Swiss franc extended gains, much to the discomfiture of the Japanese and Swiss central banks.
(Anirban Nag. Sterling and euro struggle as Brexit shock lingers Reuters. June 27, 2016.)

A Michigan mum has called for gun control after finding her three-year-old daughter standing on a toilet.

Stacey Wehrman Feeley first thought it was a funny photo to send to her husband - her "mischievous" preschooler standing on the toilet seat.

But she "broke down" when her daughter told her she was practicing for a lockdown drill at her preschool and what you should do if you are stuck in a bathroom when there's an attacker.
(Mum 'broke down' when she found out why her little girl was standing on the toilet. Stuff.co.nz. June 24, 2016.)

American Heritage Dictionary

A protocol followed in an emergency that involves confining people in a secure place, such as the confinement of prison inmates in cells after a disturbance, or the locking of students and teachers in classrooms after a violent attack.

patent troll

Chinese officials, long accused of condoning hacking, industrial espionage, theft of intellectual property and entertainment piracy, have finally decided to take a hard line. Against California-based Apple.

The patent regulator in Beijing — who knew there was one? — has ordered Apple to stop selling some of its phones in the Chinese capital because they purportedly resemble Chinese-made products too closely.
(China’s chutzpah: Accusing Apple of copying from Chinese phones? Pittsburg-Post Gazette. June 22, 2016.)

Late last week, reports began to surface indicating that Apple was being forced to halt sales of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in Beijing due to a patent infringement claim from a company called Schenzhen Baili. Specifically, the company alleged that Apple’s 2014 iPhone models infringed upon the design of its own 100C smartphone.

In light of all this, the Wall Street Journal dug a little bit deeper and discovered that Schenzhen Baili “barely exists.” Not only does the company have no working phone, the Journal discovered that there’s not even a company office to speak of. In other words, what we have here is nothing more than your run of the mill patent troll.
(Yoni Heisler. Shocker! Company that sued Apple over iPhone 6 is a patent troll. BGR. June 22, 2016.)

patent troll

"sold-out crowd"の意外 ― sold-out

Charlie Sheen admitted he had sex with 25 people without telling them he was HIV positive — but insisted he never had unprotected sex with any them, according to a report.

“I never did. I wouldn’t do that to someone, I would not,” he told a sold-out crowd during an interview with Piers Morgan at a London Town Hall event Sunday night, Radar Online reported.
(Sophia Rosenbaum. Charlie Sheen didn’t tell 25 sexual partners he had HIV, report claims. New York Post. June 20, 2016.)

he (=Charlie Sheen) told a sold-out crowd

"sold-out"(売り切れ)と"crowd"がなぜ結びつくのか!?"sold-out"は「売り切れ」の意味ですが、"sold-out ticket"(tickets are sold out)とは言っても、"sold-out crowd"(crowd is sold out)には違和感があります。

having all available tickets or accommodations sold completely and especially in advance;
also: of or relating to a sold-out event

つまり、"sold-out crowd"とは、"crowd in a sold-out event"ということになります。

I remember seven years ago, at the Opera Theater of St. Louis, a young tenor named Stanford Olsen singing Donizetti exquisitely before a sold-out audience of 950 at the Loretto-Hilton Theater.
(New York Times. 1997.)

not a week goes by without ~

It seems like not a week goes by without news of a major password hack, and the subsequent reminders to turn on two-factor verification for all of your devices and services. So, to make the process that much simpler on your end (but not any potential hacker's end, hopefully) Google has announced a streamlined method for approving sign-in requests. Google Prompt, as 9to5Google is calling the service, allows you to approve these requests with a simple yes or no pop-up, rather than receiving a confirmation email, text or setting up a separate security key.
(Andrew Dalton. Google Prompt streamlines two-step verification. Engadget. June 21, 2016.)

(It seems like) not a week goes by without news of a major password hack

not a week goes by without xxx

Twenty harrowing minutes went by without any aid in sight.
(Chicago Sun Times, 2003.)

runoff

ROME — An anti-establishment party founded by a comic has triumphed in Italian mayoral runoff elections, trouncing Premier Matteo Renzi's candidates in Rome and another key city and turning its sights Monday toward its next goal — national power.

The 5-Star Movement candidate in Rome, Virginia Raggi, a lawyer with a three-year stint as a city councilwoman, took 67.2 percent of the vote in a two-person runoff Sunday, becoming the corruption-stained capital city's first female mayor and, at 37, also its youngest.
(Comic's Party Wins Italy Mayoral Races, Eyes National Power. New York Times. June 20, 2016.)

runoff

jump-off
play-off

weigh

One day after searchers found the body of a 2-year-old boy who had been snatched into the waters of a Disney resort in Orlando, the company is reviewing its policies about warning signs.

"We are conducting a swift and thorough review of all our processes and protocols," read a statement from Walt Disney World Vice President Jacquee Wahler on Thursday. "This includes the number, placement and working of our signage and warnings."
(Mekanie Everseley. Disney weighs policies regarding alligator warning signs. USA Today. June 16, 2016.)

Disney weighs policies regarding alligator warning signs

to consider carefully especially by balancing opposing factors or aspects in order to reach a choice or conclusion
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

The governor of Tokyo, Yoichi Masuzoe, has resigned following revelations about his profligate spending habits in a scandal that risked damaging the political fortunes of the country’s prime minister, Shinzo Abe.

His resignation on Wednesday came after officials from the ruling Liberal Democratic party (LDP), which had supported his candidacy, turned on the governor in an attempt to avoid a voter backlash in key elections next month.
(Justin McCurry. Tokyo's governor Yoichi Masuzoe resigns over expenses scandal. The Guardian. June, 15, 2016.)

on the verge of

PHILADELPHIA — In the city of cheesesteaks and soft pretzels, a soda tax that regulates people’s behavior is a hard sell.

But Philadelphia is on the verge of becoming only the second city in the country to pass a tax on soft drinks, thanks to the mayor’s creative approach to push the plan as a way to address some of its other ills, including paying for pre-kindergarten opportunities, rebuilding crumbling recreation centers and creating community schools.

The 1.5 cent per ounce tax on regular and diet sodas is expected to raise $91 million. City council is set to approve the measure at its Thursday meeting.
(Errin Haines Whack. Philadelphia soda tax sold public interest over health. The Washington Post. June 12, 2016.)

on the verge of...

on the cusp of...

on the cusp of

Governments around the world have been trying to convince citizens to drink less soda by making it more difficult - or at least, more expensive - for consumers to get their sugary caffeine fix.

As a result, soda giants like PepsiCo and Coke are making major changes to soda products and diversifying their offerings outside of sugary drinks.

Most recently, Philadelphia is on the cusp of becoming the first major American city to begin taxing soda.
(Kate Taylor. Governments around the world are taxing soda — and it's forcing Coke and Pepsi to make major changes. Business Insider. June 11, 2016.)

on the cusp of...

on the cusp of a new era
on the cusp of a historic achievement

信号無視 ― run a red light

run a red light

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Authorities say two children were critically injured when five pedestrians were struck by a car that had gone onto a sidewalk after running a red light and hitting another vehicle at a Las Vegas street intersection.

Las Vegas police say the driver fled the scene Saturday night but was found less than 2 miles away and arrested on hit-and-run charges.
(Car Runs Red Light; 2 Children Critically Hurt; Arrest Made. CBS News. June 11, 2016.)

throw one's support behind

WASHINGTON — President Obama is preparing to endorse Hillary Clinton in the coming days, according to the Associated Press.

Clinton will likely become the presumptive Democratic nominee Tuesday night, and Obama plans to waste no time in throwing his support behind his one-time rival and former secretary of state and hit the campaign trail to stop Donald Trump.
(Camelon Joseph. President Obama prepares to endorse Hillary Clinton, sources say. New York Daily News. June 6, 2016.)

throw(ing) one's support behind his one-time rival

He has the president behind him.

TOKYO — The little boy whose parents left him alone in bear-invested woods for misbehavior — and went missing for six days — returned home Tuesday with his contrite mother and father.

Seven-year-old Yamato Tanooka was released from the hospital after going missing for nearly a week in the forests of northern Japan, triggering a search and high drama that riveted the nation. He was found tired and hungry but otherwise safe and sound at an unoccupied army camp three miles from where he was last seen.
(Kirk Spitzer. Japanese boy left in woods for days heads home from hospital. USA Today. June 7, 2016.)

with his contrite mother and father

― absenteeism

WASHINGTON — It’s a challenge to teach children who aren’t in class — and new government numbers show more than 6.5 million students were absent for at least three weeks of the school year.

The problem was particularly acute in Washington, D.C., where nearly a third of students were absent 15 days or more in a single school year, according to an Associated Press analysis of Education Department data. Washington state and Alaska weren’t that far behind, with absentee rates hovering around a quarter of students.

Florida had the lowest rate of absences: 4.5 percent of students in the state were chronically missing school.
(State-by-state look at chronic absenteeism across America. The Washington Post. June 7, 2016.)

absenteeism

a tendency to be away from work or school without a good reason : the practice or habit of being absent from work or school

― Japan Inc.

Japan Inc. has $59 billion at stake on the June 23 referendum in the U.K., when Britons vote to either leave or stay in the European Union.

That’s the amount Japanese companies have invested in the U.K., which benefits more from Japanese investment than any other country outside Europe apart from the U.S., according to figures compiled by the Japan External Trade Organization. More than 1,300 Japanese companies -- including Toyota Motor Corp., Hitachi Ltd. and Nissan Motor Co. -- employ over 140,000 people in the U.K., Prime Minister David Cameron said last month.
(Chris Cooper. Brexit Opposed by Japan Inc. as $59 Billion Rides on Referendum. Bloomberg. June 7, 2016.)

Japan Inc.

A nickname for the corporate world of Japan that came about during the 1980s boom, when Western business people saw how closely the Japanese government worked with its nation's business sector.
(Investopedia

Japan Inc.: The term is used constantly by politicians, corporate chieftains and the major U.S. media (including The Washington Post). It's catchy. It's descriptive. And it's short enough to fit in a headline or a TV correspondent's 30-second stand-up.
(Washington Post, 1993.)

He (=Prime Minister Shinzo Abe) has strengthened economic ties with nations like India and Burma that are keen to hedge against China Inc.
(Time, 2013.)

elliptical

An elliptical trainer or cross-trainer (also called an X-trainer) is a stationary exercise machine used to simulate stair climbing, walking, or running without causing excessive pressure to the joints, hence decreasing the risk of impact injuries.
(Wikipedia)

― trial

For the average pedestrian, it's immensely hard to look up from an Instagram scroll when you need to, say, cross a four-lane freeway.

That's why the New South Wales state government is looking to trial ground level traffic lights at key crossings in Sydney, Australia from December.

Fed up with pedestrians who can't take their eyes off the screen, the government is obliged nevertheless to try and save their lives. It will implement a six month trial of the traffic lights at a cost of A$250,000.
(Ariel Bogle. Australia is putting traffic lights in the ground because you're glued to your phone. Mashable. June 1, 2016.)

...government is looking to trial ground level traffic lights...

また、Oxford Dictionary(オンライン)でも、

to test the ability, quality or performance of something to see if it will be effective or successful

refuse -> refusal
deny -> denial

read up

RANCHOS PALOS VERDES, California —Bill Gates is apparently balancing his fear of "super intelligence" with an almost unbridled enthusiasm for the future of artificial intelligence.

"No doubt in a 19-year time frame there will be more robots doing physical jobs," said Gates at the Code Conference on Wednesday.

Gates foresees them driving (autonomous cars) in warehouses and even cleaning up rooms.

The former Microsoft CEO and founder has, apparently been reading up on AI. Gate's wife, Melinda Gates, who runs the Gates Foundation with him, explained that she always knows what's on Bill's mind just by looking at his book bag. Recently, she said, it's been filled with AI books. "So while you think he’s working on philanthropy, he’s also working on AI," she said, laughing.
(Lance Ulanoff. Bill Gates: AI is the holy grail. Mashable. June 2, 2016.)

― guy

Former Army chief David Morrison has today launched a Diversity Council Australia campaign to phase out words which he said are inappropriate for workplaces - such as "guys" when describing a group of men and women.

Introduced with the social media hashtag #WordsAtWork, the campaign features a video where female office workers explain the inappropriate use of words such as "girls", "Abo", "poofter", "ball-breaker" and "retard".

In the video, the former Army chief said: "Everyday at work there are hazards you walk past without realising just how dangerous they are."
(Morrison launches campaign to phase out gender-based words like 'guys' from workplaces. SBS. June 1, 2016.)

You guys...
