The launch of the Apple Watch has brought a whole new level of attention to wearable tech and in the process is exposing an issue with one of the technologies at the, er, heart, of many wearable devices.

Tracking your heart rate - be it out of curiosity as you sit at your desk, or as a useful tool in exercises regimes - is one of the key features pushed by the Apple Watch as well as other wearable devices.

But users with tattoos on their wrists have taken to social networks to report problems using the feature.
(How #tattoogate has highlighted a wider problem with wearables. The Guardian. April 30, 2015.)

slam dunk

WASHINGTON — They eventually may win, but Tuesday's Supreme Court arguments on same-sex marriage revealed it's too soon for gay and lesbian couples to celebrate.

After months of a one-sided public debate between a powerful gay rights movement and its less organized opponents, the justices peppered the movement's top lawyers with tough questions that showed they are wary of moving too fast.

There was Chief Justice John Roberts, questioning gay marriage pioneer Mary Bonauto on why the court should change the "basic definition" of marriage.

There was Justice Anthony Kennedy, the one gay rights advocates are counting on to write the decision affirming a constitutional right to marriage, noting that definition "has been with us for millennia."

There was Justice Samuel Alito, reminding that through the end of the 20th century, "there never was a nation or a culture that recognized marriage between two people of the same sex."
(First take: No slam-dunk for same-sex marriage? USA Today. April 28, 2015.)

SILVER SPRING, Md. — A Maryland couple is gaining support on their views of what's called "free-range" parenting and now May 9 has been declared by those supporters as "Take your kids to the park...and let them walk home by themselves day."
(Parents urged to support free-range family and allow children to walk home alone. WSB Atlanta. April 27, 2015.)

Two Sundays ago, Danielle and Alexander Meitiv of Montgomery County, Maryland, got a call from Child Protective Services. Police had taken their two children, ages 10 and 6, into custody three hours earlier and were holding them at the crisis center.

Had the children been abused? No. Were they lost? No. So what prompted this extraordinary intervention? A concerned pedestrian had seen the children walking alone and called 911. It was the second time in four months that the Meitivs' children were reported to authorities as they walked home from parks about a mile away.
(Other views: Let 'free range' kids roam home. The Daily Advertiser. April 27, 2015.)

riff

It's good to see that President Obama is reading his USA TODAY.

During his routine at Saturday's White House correspondents dinner, the president riffed repeatedly on Fredreka Schouten's exclusive interview last week with billionaire industrialist Charles Koch, who named the five Republican candidates that he and brother David might support in next year's election.
(David Jackson. Obama riffs on USA TODAY's Koch story. USA Today. April 26, 2015.)

show up

Microsoft just showed up Google

One of the hottest rivalries in tech, Google (GOOGL) vs. Microsoft (MSFT), just swung in Microsoft’s favor in earnings season.

Microsoft delivered an adjusted quarterly profit of 61 cents a share, topping expectations by 15%. Microsoft has now beaten earnings expectations five out of the past six quarters. Shares are up nearly 3% in afterhours trading. Shares closed up 36 cents, or 0.8%, to $43.34 in regular trading.

Meanwhile, Google missed … again. Google reported an adjusted quarterly profit of $6.57 a share, falling short of Wall Street’s expectations calling for a profit of $6.61.
(Matt Krantz. Microsoft just showed up Google. USA Today. April 23, 2015.)

(Microsoft profits decimated because you're still not buying PCs; The Register)に触れていたこともあって、上記の引用を読んだときはやや戸惑いました。

buzz

Flitting from blossom to blossom, bees represent an ecological lifeline from one generation of plants to the next – paid in nectar and pollen to keep the reproductive ball rolling on farms, in woods, and in backyard gardens.

But since 2006, concerns have grown over a decline in bee colonies worldwide. One of several potential suspects researchers have identified: a class of pesticides known as neonicotinoids. Formulated to be less harmful to mammals than its predecessors, neonicotinoids spread throughout a plant to boost its resistance to insects.

But the pesticide also finds its way into nectar and pollen, and therein lies the rub. A growing body of research has identified several ways neonicotinoids can harm wild and domesticated varieties of bees. But the results sometimes have encountered criticism, especially from pesticide makers, for whom neonicotinoids, by some estimates, represent more than 20 percent of their market.

Taken together, the two studies point to a compound that, with repeated exposure, can be detrimental to bees who can't stop themselves from going back for more.

With each visit, "they're getting their little buzz, as it were," said Geraldine Wright, a researcher at Newcastle University's Institute of Neuroscience in Britain who led a team performing one of the two studies.
(Peter Spottes. Can bees become addicted to pesticides? Christian Science Monitor. April 23, 2015.)

sputter

NEW YORK (AP) — McDonald's sales have been sputtering for more than two years and the company seems trapped in a cycle of bad headlines that likely won't end soon.

Its quarterly earnings results on Wednesday aren't expected to be pretty either, and there's a chance its dominance will continue to wane as newer players keep coming onto the scene.

But don't write the obituary just yet. McDonald's has many strengths that the rivals biting at its heels can only envy, including Ronald McDonald's worldwide recognition. The Golden Arches will need to put them to good use to remain the world's largest restaurant chain.
(Why McDonald's is still a powerhouse, despite troubles. Associated Press. April 21, 2015.)

sputter

Merriam-Webster Dictionary

The motor sputtered and died.

She won the race of her life.

A woman who lost her leg in the Boston Marathon bombing two years ago returned Monday — to triumphantly run in this year’s race.
“I took my life back today,” said an emotional Rebekah Gregory, 27, after falling to her knees, weeping, on the rain-soaked pavement at the finish line at about 4 p.m.

Clad in a bright-blue “Rebekah Strong” T-shirt, Gregory wore a pink sneaker on her right foot. Her left leg was fitted with her cheetah-printed prosthetic, which she calls “Felicia.”

Gregory gleefully posted a photo of her big finish on social media, writing, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”
(Sophia Rosenbaum. Woman who lost leg in Boston Marathon bombing finishes this year’s race. New York Post. April 21, 2015.)

institution of marriage

WASHINGTON – Sen. Marco Rubio believes gays and lesbians are born that way– but they don’t have a fundamental right to marry.

Marriage should be between one man and one woman, but states that disagree should be allowed to make their own rules, Rubio said on CBS’s “Face the Nation” Sunday.

“It’s not that I’m against gay marriage,” said Rubio (R-Fla.) “I believe the definition of the institution of marriage should be between one man and one woman. States have always regulated marriage. And if a state wants to have a different definition, you should petition the state legislature and have a political debate.”
(Marisa Schultz. Rubio: ‘People are born gay, but don’t have right to marry.’New York Post. April 19, 2015.)

the institution of marriage

boffin

A former senior official in China’s Ministry of Public Security, who according to state media reports has worked on surveillance and internet censorship technology, has been arrested for suspected corruption.

Ma Xiaodong, the former deputy chief at the ministry’s science and technology information bureau, has been detained for allegedly taking bribes, a statement issued by prosecutors in northern Shaanxi province said.
(Nectar Gan. Technology boffin who helped develop China's ‘Great Firewall’ accused of corruption. South China Morning Post. April 17, 2015.)

Google has popped the lid off its Google Handwriting Input, new Android software that lets you input your text longhand in any 'droid app.

The Chocolate Factory's research arm says handwriting recognition is needed because touchscreen keyboards remain modestly effective and while “Voice input is an option, but there are situations where it is not feasible, such as in a noisy environment or during a meeting.”
(Simon Sharwood. Google unveils scribble-tab-ulous handwriting interface for Android. The Register. April 16, 2015.)

longhand

ICYMI

ICYMI

#ICYMI

in case you missed it

In case you missed it (used in electronic communication to draw attention to something noteworthy)

nosh

Hillary Rodham Clinton put on some dark glasses and slipped quietly into an Ohio Chipotle restaurant on Monday — but nobody noticed.

The presidential candidate, joined by aide Huma Abedin, ordered the chicken burrito bowl with guacamole at the Mexican-food eatery just outside Toledo, where she stayed for about 45 minutes, according to WTVG-TV.

Manager Charles Wright told ABC News that no one recognized Clinton in her shades. He only released a security video of Hillary’s nosh stop after he was contacted by journalists.
(Joe Tacopino. Hillary Clinton goes incognito to grab some Chipotle. New York Post. April 14, 2015.)

― bleach

Clorox has apologized for a social media misstep after the household products company sparked outrage by tweeting 'where's the bleach' in reference to last week's introduction of new 'emoji' cartoons for iPhones that include several faces of people with black and brown skin.

The maker of Clorox bleach and other products says it was attempting a humorous reference to other emoji symbols for objects like toilets and bathtubs that people use bleach to clean.

But the corporate Twitter post hit a nerve when news reports and online discussions were focusing on the new collection of racially diverse faces that have been added to the symbols people can use in emails and text messages.

On Twitter, some users blasted the company for what they said was a 'racist' post.
(Clorox forced to apologize after brand is accused of racially insensitive tweet about 'bleaching' black and brown emojis. The Daily Mail. April 13, 2015.)

thin crowd

The arrival of the Apple Watch in stores Friday failed to draw the same crowds that greeted the launch of the iPhone 6—but this may be a sign that Apple fans are prepared to queue overnight to buy, but not just to try.

For the next two weeks, visitors to the stores can only look at the watches or—by appointment—try them on for 15 minutes.

They can also preorder the watch, which won’t go on sale until April 24, but since this is done via Apple’s online store, they could just as easily order at home, or through Apple’s mobile app.
(Peter Sayer. Apple Watch greeted by thin crowds in stores, suggesting fans prefer to buy, not fondle. PC World. April 10, 2015.)

Muted Debut for Apple Watch With Sparse Crowds in Europe and Asia

The most ridiculously over-the-top hotel amenities

Free shampoo? Boring. Bathrobes? Yawn. Travelers have come to expect these once-special hotel amenities, whether we’re plopping our heads on the pillows of hip hostels or posh penthouses.

And it seems hotels are taking note, seeing our expectations and raising us some carefully selected and sometimes off-the-wall amenities that not only stoke our vanity, but also create experiences to remember long after we’ve checked out.

From in-room Glamour Bars to use of a convertible Porsche, these hotels are bringing their A-game when it comes to amenities and making sure we look and feel fabulous day and night.
(Kimberly Lovato. The most ridiculously over-the-top hotel amenities. New York Post. April 8, 2015.)

over-the-top

adjudication

The nation’s biggest telecommunications companies have agreed to implement a “three-strikes” warning scheme that will see the personal details of online copyright infringers handed to big movie and television companies.

Designed to drive down Australia’s rampant rate of internet piracy, the code has today been submitted for registration by the Australian Communications and Media Authority and comes less than 24 hours after iiNet and M2 Group lost a court battle to keep the personal details of more than 4700 infringers from the copyright owners of the Hollywood film Dallas Buyers Club.
(Telcos propose ‘three-strikes’ rule. The Australian. April 8, 2015.)

If an infringer receives three warnings within a 12-month period, telcos will be then obliged to help copyright owners identify the accused for potential legal action.

Alleged pirates will be able to ask an independent adjudication panel to review their case if they receive warnings.
(ibid.)

adjudication

the birds and the bees

Sex education in schools can be a contentious issue but an idea from a Danish sexologist is sure to set a new bar for controversy.

Aside from the obligatory birds and the bees talk, professor Christian Graugaard is calling for porn to be critiqued in classrooms to allow students to critically analyse the video in an academic setting.

"Instead of having sex education be boring and technical... I want us to educate young people to be critical consumers who see porn with reflection and critical distance," he told a Danish public broadcaster last month.
(Sexologist says porn should be taught alongside sex ed. New York Post. April 6, 2015.)

the obligatory birds and the bees talk

"the birds and the bees"という表現は成句として確立したもののようですが、言わば子供向けの性教育のコンテンツを意味するものです。

dick pic

Snowden shows John Oliver how the NSA can see your dick pics

In a surprise interview with Edward Snowden, John Oliver made NSA spying revelations more relatable to the American public through the topic of dick pics. The HBO comedian, who gives his satire a sharp bite via exhaustive research, traveled to Moscow for a sit-down with the infamous whistle-blower.
(Steve Dent. Snowden shows John Oliver how the NSA can see your dick pics. Engadget. April 6, 2015.)

throw under bus

Bernanke rejects charge of Fed 'throwing seniors under bus'

WASHINGTON (AP) — Ben Bernanke no longer leads the Federal Reserve, but he's hardly letting up in his defense of the ultra-low-rate policies he engineered — and his successor, Janet Yellen, has continued.

In his first post as a new blogger Monday, Bernanke struck back at critics who he said had charged the Bernanke Fed with, among other things, "throwing seniors under the bus" by keeping rates too low for too long.

He also disputed accusations that the Fed is still distorting financial markets and investment decisions by keeping rates "artificially low."
(Martin Crutsinger. Bernanke rejects charge of Fed 'throwing seniors under bus.' The Montana Standard. March 30, 2015.)

Ben Bernanke

Cause someone else to suffer in order to save oneself or gain personal advantage

When you're buying a $10,000 watch, you expect first-class service -- and Apple is apparently ready to deliver. Sources for 9to5Mac claim that people who buy the gold Apple Watch Edition will get to skip the queues whenever they need help. They'll be bumped to the front of the line when buying, and they'll have an hour to spend trying out watches in a private area (complete with an expert) instead of 15 minutes at a table like the hoi polloi. And if the worst happens, they'll get at least two years of access to a dedicated Edition phone support line that operates around the clock.
(Jon Fingas. Apple Watch Edition buyers will get the red carpet treatment. Engadget. March 29, 2015.)

hoi polloi

逐語訳すれば、"hoi" (the)、"polloi" (many)、となります。

― white-glove

Apple Watch Edition Buyers Getting Luxury, White-Glove Treatment

Apple is going upscale in a way it never has before in order to sell its high-priced wearable. The Apple Watch goes on sale April 24, but you won't be able to simply walk into a store and buy one. Instead, Apple will require appointments for watch seekers.
(Apple Watch Edition Buyers Getting Luxury, White-Glove Treatment. InformationWeek. March 30, 2015.)
