clip the wings

United Airlines wants to clip the wings of a 22-year-old Manhattan computer whiz who found a loophole that saves travelers big bucks on airfare.

Aktarer Zaman founded Skiplagged.com, which finds cheap flights by using “hidden city” ticketing, in which travelers purposely buy tickets with layovers for a lower fare, using the layover city as their intended destination, CNNMoney reports, and never go on to the itinerary’s final destination. He started the site last year.

United Airlines joined discount travel website Orbitz last moth to file a lawsuit in Chicago federal court against Zaman, calling his site “unfair competition” and accusing it of promoting “strictly prohibited” travel.
(Yaron Steinbuch. United Airlines suing 22-year-old computer whiz. New York Post. December 30, 2014.)

to restrain someone; to reduce or put an end to someone's privileges. (Alludes to clipping a bird's wings to keep it from flying away.)
(McGraw-Hill Dictionary of American Idioms and Phrasal Verbs.)

fall into line

First they made Google give their citizens the right to be forgotten, now European regulators have forced Apple to offer a 14-day, no questions asked return policy for digital goods purchased through iTunes and the App Store.

Apple customers residing in European Union member countries have been granted the right to request their money back for any songs, apps or books within two weeks of purchase, provided the content has been downloaded automatically. If a user downloads the content manually to another device, the refund does not apply.

Apple previously allowed users to cancel a transaction at any time until point of delivery, but because automatic downloads often cause content to be delivered instantly upon payment this didn't actually allow users any time to change their minds.
(Apple falls into EU line, offers 14-day refunds for digital goods, no questions asked. The Sydney Morning Herald. December 30, 2014.)

Apple falls into EU line

"fall into line"は成句で、

To adhere to established rules or predetermined courses of action

go bananas

A troop of monkeys at an ape sanctuary have gone bananas after they were denied cut price fruit and vegetables, keepers say.

The primates apparently went ape after their keepers were stopped from buying waste food at 10 per cent of the retail price.

The owners of the Wales Ape and Monkey Sanctuary say supermarkets have stopped selling them waste fresh food before it is thrown away.

Jan Garen, who runs the sanctuary at Abercrave, near Swansea, said: "The agreement is vital for the sanctuary. The cut price veg really helps us in the costly task of keeping the animals fed."

She received no notice that the usual delivery of fruit, vegetables and other fresh food destined for the bins had been cancelled two months ago.
(Monkeys 'go bananas' as supermarket stops selling them cut-price food. The Telegraph. December 3, 2014.)

went ape

Britain's first "social supermarket" has opened its doors selling unwanted surplus food to people on benefits at a fraction of the price.

Community Shop is the country's newest cooperative that and aims to help more than 50,000 stuck in food poverty.

The chain will sell quality surplus food donated from the major supermarkets at 70 per cent less than normal price.

Each shop will work on a membership scheme with only those on income support eligible to join.
(Tom Whitehead. Social supermarket opens selling cut price food to those on benefits. The Telegraph. December 15, 2014.)

Children who eat the most fast-food tend to get significantly poorer scores in math, science and reading tests, a new nationwide study that examined the habits of over 8,500 young Americans reveals.

Parents now have a new matter of concern regarding their kids’ fast-food consumption, as it correlates with future academic achievements, not to mention obesity and skin problems.

Visits to popular restaurants such as McDonald’s, Burger King, Pizza Hut and KFC, at the age of 10, could have ill-effects three years later, in eighth grade, says the report, published in Clinical Pediatrics journal this month.
(Fast food, slow kids: Eating junk leads to poorer academic results, study shows. RT.com. December 22, 2014.)

Fast food, slow kids: Eating junk leads to poorer academic results, study shows

mentally dull : stupid
naturally inert or sluggish
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

chatter

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott says there has been a "heightened level of terror chatter" since the siege at a Sydney cafe last week.

Mr Abbott said the National Security Committee had met to discuss the development on Tuesday.

However, the terrorist threat level would remain at "high" and not be raised to "extreme", he added.

Earlier, memorial services were held for the two hostages killed by a gunman in the siege.
(Australia PM Abbott warns of 'heightened terror chatter.' BBC News. December 23, 2014.)

The State Department issued a "worldwide caution" Thursday, warning that the newly released tape of Osama Bin Laden and a recent increase in intelligence "chatter" might indicate an imminent terrorist attack. What kind of intel counts as chatter?

When intelligence agencies monitor chatter, they examine not the content of communications intercepts, but the volume. Intelligence agencies won't define the term publicly because, they say, any disclosure might help the enemy deconstruct their methods and devise a defense. But those with knowledge of the agencies' tactics say that operatives pay attention to fluctuations in the number of messages sent and received over networks used by known and suspected terrorists.
(David Joachim. What Is Intelligence Chatter, Anyway? Slate.com. September 12, 2003.)

messages sent and received over networks used by known and suspected terrorists

― fracking

ALBANY, N.Y. - While environmental groups are doing a victory dance over New York's decision to ban fracking, farmers such as apple grower David Johnson are grieving for dashed hopes and dreams.

"I'm devastated," Johnson said after Gov. Andrew Cuomo's health and environmental commissioners announced Wednesday that they were recommending a fracking ban. "I have concerns about how to continue this farm that's been in the family for 150 years."
(NY farmers lament lost opportunity for gas riches. The Associated Press. December 21, 2014.)

In certain places in New York, Wednesday's news of the state's ban on fracking inspired public celebration.

When a manager at GreenStar Natural Foods Market in Ithaca announced the news over a loud speaker, people in the store began applauding, cheering, shouting and hugging. "People had worked for this for so long," said Dawn Lodor, an assistant manager at the store, which helped organize opposition to shale gas development.
(Tom Wilber. How fracking got stopped in N.Y. Ithaca Journal. December 21, 2014.)

The hack of Sony Pictures, which the FBI blamed on North Korea, was not an act of war, President Obama said in an interview broadcast on Sunday.

"I don't think it was an act of war," he told CNN's "State of the Union with Candy Crowley" in an interview that was recorded on Friday. "I think it was an act of cyber vandalism that was very costly, very expensive. We take it very seriously. We will respond proportionately, as I said."
(Martyn Williams. Sony hack was cyber vandalism, says president. Computer World. December 21, 2014.)

目の上のたんこぶ ― pain in the a**

Microsoft kills its Euro pane in the a**: The 'would you prefer Chrome?' window

Fresh Windows PCs in Europe will no longer offer to install Google Chrome and other web browsers rivaling Internet Explorer.

That change, quietly announced on a Microsoft support website, marks the end of a European Commission-mandated period during which users had to be offered a choice in web browser when they installed Windows or switched on a computer running the OS for the first time.

In 2009, Microsoft agreed to include a tool that allowed users in Europe to select from using Internet Explorer or number of rival browsers, such as Opera, Chrome and Firefox. Previously (and in other parts of the world) fresh versions of Windows simply installed IE and set it up as the default app for web browsing.
(Shaun Nichols. Microsoft kills its Euro pane in the a**: The 'would you prefer Chrome?' window. The Register. December 18, 2014.)

Microsoft kills its Euro pane in the a**

pain in the a**

pain in the neck

wake-up call

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott on Thursday admitted Sydney's cafe siege was "a horrific wake-up call" as details emerged of the final minutes of the standoff which left the gunman and two hostages dead.

Abbott has ordered an urgent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy and why deranged self-styled Islamic cleric Man Haron Monis was not under surveillance given his history of extremism and violence.
(Australian PM says cafe siege 'horrific wake-up call.' Daily Mail. December 18, 2014.)

something that serves to alert a person to a problem, danger, or need
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

While Khadir says he is "happy" that Sept. 11 was a "wake-up call for America, and for us," the US should not be the first target.

MOSCOW — Russia's ruble resumed its free fall Tuesday as oil prices — the country's main source of revenue — continued to slide and an extraordinary move by the Russian Central Bank failed to halt the currency's steady fall.

"The situation is critical," Central Bank Deputy Chairman Sergei Shvetsov said, as Russia faced its worst financial crisis since a debt default in 1998. "Even in our worst dreams we could not have imagined a year ago that something like this was possible."
(Anna Arutunyan. Russia's ruble in free fall amid panic. USA Today. December 16, 2014.)

(Reuters) - Whether popular, corporate or entitled, "culture" was named word of the year by U.S. dictionary Merriam-Webster on Monday as a flexible catch-all that can easily identify a subject, idea or issue.

Merriam-Webster defines culture as the beliefs, customs and arts of a "society, group, place or time." The word was buoyed by media coverage about "celebrity culture," "company culture" and "rape culture" dominating media and public conversations, the dictionary publisher said.
('Culture' gets nod as Merriam-Webster's 2014 word of the year. Reuters. December 15, 2014.)

A hostage taker in a Sydney cafe has contacted three media outlets via the hostages and demanded two things: an ISIS flag and a phone call with Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, CNN affiliate Sky News Australia reported.
(Sydney hostage taker reportedly demands ISIS flag as some captives escape. CNN. December 15, 2014.)

The rebels had barricaded themselves within the old city.

hostage holder

hostage crisis
hostage taking
hostage holding
hostage situation

After Nut Rumpus, Macadamia Sales Rocket

The aftermath of a Korean Air executive's rage over how a steward presented macadamia nuts in her airline's first-class cabin has had an immediate side effect: sales of the nuts have risen sharply in South Korea.

From The Wall Street Journal:

"Sales of the nuts from Monday through Tuesday at Gmarket, one of South Korea's top online marketplaces and owned by eBay, are up 149 percent from the same period a week ago, the Edaily business newspaper reported."

It's an unlikely update to a story we reported Tuesday, when Cho Hyun-ah, the daughter of Korean Air Chairman and CEO Cho Yang-ho, resigned her post as a vice president at the company her family controls.
(Bill Chappell. After Nut Rumpus, Macadamia Sales Rocket. North West Public Radio. December 11, 2014.)

Nut Rumpus

Curiosity killed the cat.

"Curiosity killed the cat."

Curiosity Did More Than Kill The Cat. It found water too

For all the people who love to hear of the next great leap for mankind we have this for you. NASA's latest mars rover, the Curiosity, recently found that Mars' Mount Sharp may have been formed in a lake millions, if not tens of millions of years go.
(Deborah Grace. Curiosity Did More Than Kill The Cat. It found water too. Pioneer News. December 10, 2014.)

つまり、"Curiosity killed the cat."

ところで、この"Curiosity killed the cat."

Care killed the cat.

Marcella Vivrette Smith Park only allows hikers on its six miles of off-road trails.

A 400-acre, hiker-friendly park in Tennessee has a message to trail runners: no running allowed.

Located in Brentwood, Tenn., Marcella Vivrette Smith Park opened last month and features more than six miles of trails. Officials said runners must stick to the paved and gravel roads in the park, however. That means those off-road trails are off limits.

A city official said it’s really about safety.
(Trail Running Not Allowed at Tennessee Park. Competitor.com. December 8, 2014.)

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House says the controversy over a Republican operative who criticized President Barack Obama's daughters is a reminder of the importance of carefully choosing one's words.

Elizabeth Lauten was the communications director to Rep. Stephen Fincher of Tennessee. She resigned Monday after a backlash over her Facebook post claiming the daughters should have shown more "class" at a turkey-pardoning ceremony.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest says he was surprised a congressional staffer would use a Thanksgiving-themed event to criticize the first family. He says individuals who frequently speak publicly tend to be mindful of how their words are perceived.

Lauten had urged the Obama girls to "dress like you deserve respect, not a spot at a bar." Earnest says it's common sense that first daughters should be off-limits to criticism.
(White House: First Daughters Should Be Off-Limits. Huffington Post. December 1, 2014.)

gherao

Clashes, arson, gherao leave one dead in Faisalabad

FAISALABAD: A Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) worker was shot dead as hundreds of PTI protesters clashed with Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) activists and riot police armed with water cannons and batons here on Monday.
(Sardar Akhtar. Clashes, arson, gherao leave one dead in Faisalabad. The International News. December 9, 2014.)

― fall of the wagon

According to a new study from the Humane Research Council (HRC), those who identify with the strict, no-meat diet usually don’t have the stomach to stay at it.

In fact, the HRC study finds that a staggering 84 percent of people who at one point identify as vegetarians find themselves "falling off the wagon," so to speak, and eating meat once again.

Worse yet, few of them are able to make it past a few months, notes Tech Times, adding that "half of them within a year's time and more than a third within three months" revert to their carnivorous habits.
(84 Percent Of Vegetarians Become Meat Eaters Again, Study Finds. Inquisitr. December 7, 2014.)

fall of the wagon

(fall) off the wagon"の対義語に、"on the wagon"というフレーズもあり、これが“禁酒をする”という意味なのですが、ここでの"wagon"とはアメリカの古き良き時代(西部劇の時代!?)

rejig

KIM Kardashian may have bragged that her naked bum photos broke the internet -- but seems she's been beaten by Korean pop sensation Psy, who has forced YouTube to rejigg their counter.

YouTube has announced that it's had to upgrade its view counter after Psy's mega-hit Gangnam Style maxed out the counter with a whopping 2.1 billion views.
(Psy's Gangnam Style video breaks YouTube view counter with more than 2.1 billion views. Herald Sun. December 4, 2014.)

To readjust or rearrange

residual delay

There were residual delays throughout the BART system Wednesday morning after trains were single-tracked in and out of San Francisco as a result of smoke seen on the tracks, agency officials said.

Normal service was restored through San Francisco about 8:45 a.m.
(Henry K. Lee. Residual BART delays after smoke seen on tracks. San Francisco Chronicle. December 3, 2014.)

Residual Delays And Packed BART Trains After Small Fire Reported Near Embarcadero Station In San Francisco
(CBS News. December 3, 2014.)

アップル、訴えられる ― in the dock

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Apple iTunes DRM trial underway in federal court here will come down to how jurors view certain code that Apple added to iTunes. The plaintiffs, representing a class of about 8 million consumers as well as large retailers, say it was anything but an "upgrade." They're seeking $351 million in damages.

In this lawsuit, the plaintiffs are contending that specific changes Apple made to iTunes 7.0 and 7.4 were anticompetitive. Apple isn't being sued for having DRM, per se, but for making tweaks to its DRM that made some forms of inter-operability, like Real Networks' Harmony, stop working.
(Joe Mullin. Apple on trial: Were iTunes updates really an anti-consumer scheme? Ars Technica. December 3, 2014.)

Apple in the Dock: $1 Billion Antitrust Claim Casts Steve Jobs as Conspirator
(Bloomberg. December 2, 2014.)

Apple on trial...

dig

GOP aide resigns after online digs at Obama daughters

WASHINGTON – Republican congressional aide Elizabeth Lauten resigned Monday morning after making controversial comments about President Obama’s teenage daughters, Fox News confirms.

Lauten, the communications director for Rep. Stephen Fincher of Tennessee, had posted on Facebook about their casual demeanor during last week's annual White House turkey pardon. She wrote that Sasha, 13, and Malia, 16, should "try showing a little class."
(Fox News. December 1, 2014.)

Haaretz implies that there will be little fallout and that the lack of consequences is because "the documents were created, sent and published within a constitutional framework that protects freedom of speech." The comment may have been a dig at Israel's government, which the left-leaning newspaper frequently criticizes for what it says is infringement on free speech and other civil rights.

snake

CHICAGO — The security line at Chicago’s Midway International Airport reached more than a mile long Sunday morning as tens of thousands of people attempted to return home from Thanksgiving trips.

Lines stretched all the way out of the airport to the commuter train stop before snaking back on themselves again, witnesses said. Denise Whitaker of Seattle news station KOMO 4 used her long wait to map the line, which she said measured 1.2 miles long.

Many people posted photos documenting the extreme waits on social media. There were multiple reports of travelers missing flights.

The Transportation Security Agency and other officials acknowledged the long lines, but said that wait times had returned to normal by 10 a.m.
(WATCH: Security line at Chicago airport reaches 1.2 miles long Sunday. FOX31 Denver. November 30, 2014.)

USA Today

Lines there stretched for more than a mile early on Sunday, according to Chicago-area media outlets. The queue to pass through Midway's Transportation Security Administration checkpoints snaked through the airport and out to the Chicago Transit Authority's Orange Line train station for several hours Sunday morning.
(Ben Mutzabaugh. Fliers tell of mile-long security line in Chicago on Sunday. USA Today. November 30, 2014.)
