小生はゴルフをやらないのでゴルフ関連のニュースにもあまり関心がないのですが、下記に引用する記事の表現に目が留まりました。


Kaymer closes out wire-to-wire US Open win

PINEHURST, N.C. (AP) - The U.S. Open trophy Martin Kaymer won Sunday was all he needed to prove he was anything but a one-hit wonder in the majors, and that the two years he spent trying to build a complete game were worth all the doubt that followed him.

As he set it down on the table, Kaymer rubbed off a tiny smudge on the gleaming silver, which was only fitting.

Over four days at Pinehurst No. 2, he dusted the field in a performance that ranks among the best.

ゴルフのUSオープントーナメントで優勝した選手に関する記事だということはゴルフを知らなくても分かるようなものですが、


wire-to-wire


が何を意味するかについてはどうでしょうか。

辞書を引くと出てきますが、


（レース、トーナメントなどの）初めから終わりまで


を意味するのが"wire-to-wire"だということです。

つまりこの選手はトーナメントの初戦からずっとトップのスコアで勝ち続けてきた、ということなのでしょう。

もう1つ引用します。

セナ（Senna）と言えば有名なF1レーサーですが、この場合は号砲が鳴ってからゴールまでずっとトップを走り続けての勝利ということでしょうか。

以前、"down to the wire"、"under the wire"という表現を取り上げたことがありますが、"wire"というのはゴールラインのテープのことでした。"wire-to-wire"で言うところの"wire"も多分同じなのでしょう。

"wire-to-wire"について言えば、最初の"wire"はスタートラインのテープで、2番目の"wire"はゴールラインのそれを指しているものと思われます。
