fill in

ED Miliband's attempts to prove he is in touch with ordinary Britons failed spectacularly yesterday when he admitted that he is more interested in American politics and baseball.

The Labour leader also said he rarely reads British newspapers or watches the news – and relies on his aides to tell him what is going on in the country.

The revelations will add to the concern among Labour MPs that Mr Miliband is out of touch with voters.
(Martyn Brown. Ed Miliband doesn't read the UK news - he gets his aides to fill him in. The Daily and Sunday Express. May 30, 2014.)

he gets his aides to fill him in

(he) relies on his aides to tell him (what is going on in the country)

Being a rookie when it comes to Tanzanian weddings, Sportolari didn't know what to think as some people got up and left in the middle of the ceremony. Flora later filled her in that a few of the guests didn't appreciate the preacher's sermon delving into the uncomfortable subjects of wife-beating and AIDS.
(Chicago Sun Times. 2007.)

男なら~ ― man up

US Secretary of State John Kerry has labelled intelligence leaker Edward Snowden a fugitive from justice who should "man up" and return home.

Mr Kerry added that if Mr Snowden, 30, "believes in America, he should trust the American system of justice".

His comments come in the wake of an interview with NBC in which Mr Snowden said he sought asylum in Russia because the US revoked his passport.
(John Kerry tells fugitive Edward Snowden to 'man up.' BBC News. May 29, 2014.)

man up

"man up"に関しては、

the nose knows

They say the nose knows, but when it comes to rotten meat, it's not always obvious when it's past its prime. Is it really as fresh as the supermarket claims? Did you perhaps leave it on the countertop for a little too long? This is a dangerous game to play when it comes to your dinner, and anyone who's ever had food poisoning can vouch for that.

What if a gadget could "sniff" out a questionable piece of meat before you ever take that first bite? That's the promise of Peres, the personal electronic sniffer and first "eNose" device to use at home for the purpose of detecting rotten meat.
(Jennifer Jolly. What's that smell? 'eNose' sniffs out rotten meat. USA Today. May 24, 2014.)

They say the nose knows, but...

It's the graffiti of the grief-stricken.

Bereaved friends and family members are scratching personalized messages into the 152 bronze panels that list victims at the 9/11 Memorial Museum, sources told The Post.

While Port Authority police are compelled to file reports on the illegal "scratchiti," no arrests have been made, and pursuing the mournful misdemeanors is not a high priority, sources said.
(Philip Messing. Visitors scratch graffiti into 9/11 Memorial name plaques. New York Post. May 26, 2014.)

It's the graffiti of the grief-stricken.

Graffiti that is scratched or etched into a wall or other surface in a public place, rather than drawn or sprayed on

IVF

A survey of more than 1000 women conducted on behalf of IVF Australia and affiliates of Virtus Health found 64 per cent of women did not know fertility rapidly declines after the age of 36. Six out of 10 also believed infertility in their 40's was easily resolved with IVF.

Professor Michael Chapman, fertility specialist IVF Australia said that the results show women did not have accurate information about their own reproductive health.

"It's a serious misconception that women can delay motherhood until their late 30s and rely on IVF to easily resolve their problems and conceive in their 40s, and these survey results suggest that is exactly what many women may do based on their beliefs," Dr Chapman said.

The survey also revealed one in five women incorrectly believed it only became difficult for a woman to fall pregnant naturally in her late 40's. Dr Chapman said that 35 years of age was the turning point in a woman's fertility.
(Most women do not know when fertility drops. The Daily Telegraph. May 25, 2014.)

In Vitro Fertilization

― leave the dish

Verizon leaves the dishes for AT&T, but it's ready to battle Netflix

Satellite TV? Verizon doesn't need it.

Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam on Tuesday crushed speculation that his telecom giant had any plans of hooking up with Dish Network.

Speculation of such a corporate marriage gained traction this week after Verizon rival AT&T reached an agreement with DirecTV to buy the satellite TV company for $48.5 billion.

"I can tell you now, that is someone's fantasy," McAdam said. "There were not, and there are not, discussions going with Dish."
(Claire Atkinson. Verizon leaves the dishes for AT&T, but it’s ready to battle Netflix. New York Post. May 20, 2014.)

leaves the dishes

(Verizon) leaves the dishes (for AT&T)"は、

"click" or ticket? ― click

As the summer travel season begins, so does a two-week long enforcement effort by Arkansas State Police and other law enforcement officers who will be on the lookout for violators of the Arkansas primary seat belt and child passenger safety laws.

The program began Monday and will continue through June 1 with state and local law enforcement agencies in Arkansas will participate in a nationwide 'Click It or Ticket' mobilization.
('Click or Ticket', child safety programs underway in Ark. Stuttgart Daily Leader. May 21, 2014.)

black eye

North Korea building collapse a black eye for Kim Jong-un

It may have taken the collapse of an apartment block in an exclusive district of the North Korean capital to reveal the Achilles heel of young leader Kim Jong-un’s secretive regime.

Last week’s accident killed the families of people important enough for North Korea to issue an obsequious and unprecedented public apology in a bid to quell public anger, some analysts said.
(North Korea building collapse a black eye for Kim Jong-un. The Globe and Mail. May 20, 2014.)

come off

FREEPORT, Maine — The first non-family member to lead L.L. Bean is planning to step down in 2016 after more than a decade as CEO. Chris McCormick, president and chief executive, told employees he’s giving early notice so there can be a smooth transition.

He helped to transform the 102-year-old retailer from a catalog company into a multi-channel retailer that does most of its business online. He also sped up the opening of retail stores, with 19 in operation and plans to open three more this year.

The privately held company is coming off its fourth consecutive year of growth.
(David Sharp. LL Bean CEO to step down in 2016. The Boston Globe. May 20, 2014.)

(the company) is coming off its fourth consecutive year of growth

make no bones about

For all the attention it's gotten, the anticipated merger between Pfizer Inc., the New York-based pharmaceutical giant, and its British rival AstraZeneca is far from a done deal. Pfizer has yet to make a formal offer, as its CEO told a parliamentary hearing last week; it has only broached informal proposals that AstraZeneca has so far rebuffed.

But if the merger does go through, Pfizer makes no bones about its intention to shift the company's legal domicile to the United Kingdom, thereby saving a fortune in taxes. As a US business, Pfizer’s foreign earnings are subject to a combined 42.1 percent corporate tax rate — the 35 percent federal rate plus New York’s 7.1 percent. As a British company, its top tax rate would fall to 21 percent. The difference could amount to $1.4 billion a year.
(Jeff Jacoby. Only Congress can stop Pfizer from fleeing high US taxes. The Boston Globe. May 18, 2014.)

make no bones about...

Collins Cobuild Dictionary of Idioms

If you make no bones about something, you do not hesitate to express your thoughts or feelings about it, even though other people may find what you say unacceptable or embarrassing.

Outrageous? Indeed. But the outrage isn't the wish of an American corporation to lower its tax bill. It is a US tax code so punitive and counterproductive that it can drive a company like Pfizer, which was launched in Brooklyn in 1849, to turn itself into a foreign corporation.
(ibid.)

A Bloomberg LP overture to New York Times No. 2 editor Dean Baquet may have helped trigger the events that resulted in his elevation to the top spot and the ouster of Executive Editor Jill Abramson.

Publisher Arthur "Pinch" Sulzberger acknowledged in a staff memo Thursday that there were long simmering "concerns about aspects of [Abramson’s] relationship with the newsroom" that prompted him to make the move.

Baquet apparently had bristled for a while under Abramson.

But things really seemed to pick up steam over the past week.

Baquet was informed May 8 that the change was afoot, according to the Times' report of events — a full six days before Abramson was given the heave-ho.
(Keith J. Kelly. The scoop on Jill Abramson’s firing from the NY Times. New York Post. May 15, 2014.)

give a person the heave-ho

ream

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – The door to the Lexus SUV shut. I had left the real world and entered the land of The Jetsons. Only question was, would I get out alive?

Reams have been written about Google's five-year-old self-driving car effort, but the focus typically is on the tech know-how required for this feat of automotive magic. Let's be clear: the search engine employs enough PhDs to whip up a moon launch for lunch. They'll crack this code.
(Marco della Cava. Tooling around in a driver-less Google car. USA Today. May 13, 2014.)

documents
information
paperwork
research
printouts

"reams of"はほとんど、"a lot of"や"lots of"と同じような用いられ方をしていると言ってよいでしょう。

また、

reams have been written

Reams have been written about Cronkite, who died in 2009 at age 92.

― tooling

Tooling around in a driver-less Google car

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - The door to the Lexus SUV shut. I had left the real world and entered the land of The Jetsons. Only question was, would I get out alive?
(Marco della Cava. Tooling around in a driver-less Google car. USA Today. May 14, 2014.)

drive, ride

Pfizer turned up the pressure on AstraZeneca today as the US drugs giant prepares to face a grilling from MPs over its £63 billion takeover plan.

Amid frustration over Astra's refusal to engage in talks, Pfizer outlined its proposals direct to the UK firm's shareholders in a presentation setting out the "strong strategic rationale" for the tie-up.
(Pfizer turns up heat in Astra war. Belfast Telegraph. May 13, 2014.)

turn up

という何でもないような動詞の表現がタイトル(turns up heat)と本文(turned up the pressure)に出てきます。

About 10 minutes before serving, add the okra and allow to cook until just tender, about 8 minutes, being careful not to overstir and break up okra. (If using frozen okra, you may need to turn up heat until the soup is at a full simmer and the okra thaws; then turn down to low.)
(Atlanta Journal Constitution. 2010.)

If someone turns up the heat on a person or situation, they put pressure on them in order to get what they want.
(Collins Cobuild Dictionary of Idioms)

janitor

A student who found $100,000 in the toilets he was cleaning at the offices of an Australian television headquarters has been allowed to keep most of the cash after a judge rewarded his honesty.

Chamindu Amarsinghe was working as a janitor in 2011 at the Nine Network's headquarters in Melbourne's Docklands when he discovered the cash while cleaning the ground floor toilets, the Herald Sun reported.

Mr Amarsinghe was unsure at first when he spotted a stash of the distinctive green and yellow Australian $100 and $50 notes in a bin in the bathroom.
(Plumb lucky! Student keeps $80k he found cleaning the toilets after his honesty is rewarded by a judge. Daily Mail. May 9, 2014.)

a Roman god that is identified with doors, gates, and all beginnings and that is depicted with two opposite faces
(Merriam-Websters Dictionary)

syphilis

Syphilis cases have doubled in the U.S. since 2005, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday.

Last year, 16,663 were infected with the sexually transmitted disease, the highest rate in the U.S. since it was nearly eliminated in 2000.

The increase is seen almost entirely in men, who account for 91% of cases in the U.S., the CDC said. The highly contagious disease's infection rate among women has remained fairly constant since 2005.
(Alexandra Sifferlin. Syphilis Rates Are Up in the U.S., Especially in Men. Time. May 8, 2014.)

Syphilis, or the French Disease"となります。

― line of duty

Seoul, South Korea (CNN) -- The head of the company that operated a passenger ferry that sank off South Korea last month killing more than 260 people was arrested Thursday, a senior prosecutor in the investigation told CNN.

Kim Han-sik, chief executive officer of Cheonghaejin Marine Company, is being charged with "causing death by negligence, as well as causing the capsizing of the ship in the line of duty," prosecutor Yang Joong-jin said.

Kim also faces a charge of violating the ship safety act, Yang said, in connection with allegations that excessive cargo a played a role in the April 16 sinking.
(Stella Kim. Prosecutor: CEO arrested, charged in South Korea ferry disaster. CNN. May 8, 2014.)

Merriam Webster

all that is authorized, required, or normally associated with some field of responsibility

More than 500 Chicago Police officers killed in the line of duty will be honored at the Gold Star Families Memorial and Park near Soldier Field.
(Chicago Sun Times, 2006.)

While there were both heroes and victims at the World Trade Center and at the Pentagon - innocent office workers and courageous first responders - the people who confronted the hijackers on Flight 93 weren't acting in the line of duty.
(Washington Post, 2011.)

adultery

Islamic religious police in Indonesia plan to publicly flog a 25-year-old widow and a married man for adultery after vigilantes gang-raped her as punishment for having extramarital sex, according to media reports.

The woman and her paramour, a 40-year-old father of five, were surprised late Wednesday by seven men and a 13-year-old boy who barged into her home in Ache, which is the only province to enforce sharia law, the Sydney Morning Herald reported Tuesday, citing The Jakarta Globe.
(Indonesian woman gang-raped, faces caning for adultery. USA Today. May 6, 2014.)

tee up

More U.S. sanctions against Russia are "teed up" and ready to be put in place if Moscow does not honor a peace deal on Ukraine, President Barack Obama said Thursday.

The U.S. and Russia signed an accord in Geneva last week committing to a plan to solve the crisis by diplomatic means.

But speaking at a press conference in Japan, Obama reiterated U.S. concerns that Moscow was encouraging armed pro-Russian separatists on the ground in eastern Ukraine.
(Barack Obama Says More U.S. Sanctions Are 'Teed Up' Against Russia. NBC News. April 24, 2014.)

weasel word

Mr. Buchanan still likes to poke people in the nose and kick them where he thinks it might do some good. He just uses words now. Certainly, his strength is that he offers no weasel words. He says things that many Americans believe but are reluctant to say except in the privacy of their own homes. "A very smart person with very simple beliefs can be extremely effective," said Michael Kinsley, Mr. Buchanan's former partner on the political television show "Crossfire."
(New York Times. 1992.)

gimmick

Quite simply, a filmmaker who can design and tell his story with 3-D tools can present an exceptional experience," says Jeffrey Katzenberg, head of DreamWorks Animation, whose studio will release Kung Fu Panda 2 in 3-D. "That's what the audience wants." Others aren't so sure. "The novelty has worn off," says Anne Thompson of the blog Thompson on Hollywood. "Filmmakers used it as a gimmick, and audiences got smart about it. That's why you're seeing dwindling returns. "
(USA Today. 2011.)

― stay

Diploma for staying the course of the Kasumigaura marathon...

stay with the race to the end(レースの最後まで頑張る)
