forensic

つい先日ですが、forensic computing(またcomputer forensics)という表現を目にしました。

exaggerate
deceive
mislead
prevaricate

Everyone knows about the big Internet scams: the e-mails advertising diet pills, the proposed Nigerian bank transfers. But we tend to overlook the milder forms of truth-stretching that have come to shape online living, and it’s hard not to. They’re often perpetuated by big and reputable companies, like Apple, Seamless, and Amazon.

Take search. General search sites, like Google and Bing, are pretty straightforward: you type in a query and get results ranked by some measure of relevance; you also see clearly marked advertisements. This experience tends to shape our expectation that searches deliver relevant results. But the same search on sites like Amazon or Seamless turns up not only relevant results but disguised advertisements, as well. As George Packer recently wrote in the magazine, “Few customers realize that the results generated by Amazon’s search engine are partly determined by promotional fees.” GrubHub Seamless, the merged food-delivery engine, recently revealed in an S.E.C. filing that “restaurants can choose their level of commission rate … to affect their relative priority in sorting algorithms, with restaurants paying higher commission rates generally appearing higher in the search order than restaurants paying lower commission rates.”
(Tim Wu. LITTLE LIES THE INTERNET TOLD ME. The New Yorker. April 17, 2014.)

Burger King's Subservient Chicken — one of the most popular viral ad campaigns of all time — is about to make a very high-profile second landing.

The move comes at a time that the $230 million fast-food industry is in a competitive tizzy. There are two major battle fronts. One is the breakfast business, with Taco Bell newly on board. The other is simply over who can create and sell the most chicken concoctions, as consumers increasingly lean toward chicken.
(Bruce Horovitz. Burger King brings back Subservient Chicken. USA Today. April 27, 2014.)

Taco Bell

tizzy

Caught red-handed: Pineda tossed as Boston wins

Boston, MA - The Boston Red Sox caught the New York Yankees in a very sticky situation to even the latest series between the two bitter AL East rivals.

After having starting pitcher Michael Pineda ejected in the second inning for a foreign substance, the Yankees went on to drop a 5-1 decision to a Red Sox team that received a much-needed boost from their own starter.

With two out and Grady Sizemore batting in the bottom of the second, home plate umpire Gerry Davis was requested by Red Sox manager John Farrell to check Pineda for illegal materials on his body.

Davis touched a brownish substance that appeared to be pine tar on the right side of the pitcher's neck and immediately tossed him from the game.
(Fox News. April 23, 2014.)

caught red-handed

trouple

Here come the brides!

Three Massachusetts lesbians got hitched and are now expecting their first child.

The nuptials of Doll, Kitten and Brynn Young were held this past August, with all three brides wearing white and traditional wedding veils.

Brynn and Kitten were married 2 ½ years ago in the Bay State, before adding Doll to their household mix.

"I cried watching Doll and Kitten walk down the aisle towards me with their dads," Brynn, a computer programmer, told The Sun newspaper of London.

"After we said our vows, Doll and Kitten kissed me first then each other."

The state of Massachusetts doesn't recognize three-way marriage – but these women insist their unconventional union is very real to them.
(David K. Li. Married lesbian 'throuple' expecting first child. New York Post. April 23, 2014.)

throuple

Mindy Taylor wanted others to have a heart but didn't appear to have one for anyone else.

The 35-year-old married mother from Chillicothe, Ohio has been charged with felony theft after allegedly posing as a cancer patient and weaseling thousands of dollars in donations in a scheme said to have fooled her own family.

The disturbing revelations of Taylor's tear-jerker were revealed earlier this month after an anonymous tipster led to her surprisingly cancer-free medical records being subpoenaed, the Columbus Dispatch reported.

By then, Taylor — who had claimed to be undergoing vigorous chemotherapy while fighting not only cancer of the small intestine but heart disease and lupus — had reportedly amassed at least $21,000 in donations.
(Nina Golgowski. Ohio mother charged after allegedly faking cancer and raising thousands in donations. New York Daily News. April 21, 2014.)

a story, song, play, film, or broadcast that moves or is intended to move its audience to tears (Merriam-Webster)

"Am I going to be an outcast?" A friend, who recently moved to an upscale neighborhood in Madison, Wis., called me last week to ask if she would be able to make mommy friends if she continued feeding her children — gasp! — non-organic food.

She had just come back from the park where two mothers were discussing a recent vacation to a resort in Puerto Rico. One told the other that there, for the first time, her toddler was given Jif peanut butter. He loved it. Prior to that he had only had Whole Foods peanut butter, which (one might guess) pales in comparison for a 3-year-old palate.

When the boy came home and asked for more Jif, his mother told him it wasn't available — that it was "Puerto Rican peanut butter."
Wrapped up in that phrase is all of the arrogance and class snobbery of the organic-food mafia. If these moms haven’t come to your neighborhood yet, just wait.
(Naomi Schaefer Riley. The tyranny of the organic mommy mafia. New York Post. April 19, 2014.)

a group of people likened to the Mafia; especially : a group of people of similar interests or backgrounds prominent in a particular field or enterprise
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

by the wayside

"by the wayside"は成句で、

out of consideration : into a condition of neglect or disuse —usually used with fall

The presence of President Obama and his family at an Easter service on Sunday created quite a stir during greeting time.

Dr. Derrick Harkins, pastor of the Nineteenth Street Baptist Church in Washington, asked worshippers to stand, turn, and welcome their neighbors -- but to remain in place.

That admonition went by the wayside as people hurried down to the second row pew featuring the president, first lady Michelle Obama, and daughters Malia and Sasha.

As they all shook hands, exchanged greetings, and posed for smart phone photos, pastor Harkins joked, "I didn't know we had as many people seated in this front section!"
(David Jackson. Obama family attends Easter service. USA Today. April 20, 2014.)

An Ohio couple who met as teenagers and were married for 70 years, almost never sleeping apart, died from natural causes within a span of 15 hours, according to their daughter.

Helen Felumlee, 92, died on April 12 at their home in Nashport, Ohio, about 55 miles east of Columbus, and her husband Kenneth Felumlee, 91, passed away the next day, according to their joint obituary.
“We knew when one went, the other was going to go,” daughter Linda Cody told the Zanesville Times Recorder. “We wanted them to go together, and they did.”
(Couple married 70 years dies hours apart. New York Post. April 20, 2014.)

2つの"coals" ― rake over the coals

General Motors finally caught a break in its ongoing ignition safety snafu from a federal judge in Texas.

GM has already been forced it [sic] to recall 2.6 million vehicles with defective ignition switches linked to at least 13 deaths. The company expects the campaign will cost it $1.3 million. CEO Mary Barra was raked over the coals in Congress last week. And personal injury lawsuits are mounting.
(Judge Lets GM Off the Hook by Denying “Park-IT” Order. Forbes. April 17, 2014.)

CEO Mary Barra was raked over the coals in Congress last week

辞書を引くと、"rake someone over the coals for..."

ところで、Collins Cobuild Dictionary of Idiomsでも調べたのですが、"rake over the coals"には2つの意味があるようです。

If you are hauled over the coals or are raked over the coals by someone, especially someone in authority, they speak to you very severely about something foolish or wrong that you have done.
(Collins Cobuild Dictionary of Idioms)

そしてもう1つの"rake over the coals"については、

If you say that someone is raking over the coals or is raking over the ashes, you mean that they are talking about something that happened in the past which you think should now be forgotten or ignored.
(ibid.)

A 3-year-old boy who went missing from his home was found inside a toy claw machine in a bowling alley.

The boy's mother called Lincoln, Neb., police Monday to report her son had gotten out of their apartment while she was in the bathroom, said Katie Flood, spokeswoman for the Lincoln Police Department.

Police canvassed the area and were notified by a man that a boy was inside the claw machine, Flood said.

The boy only could have gotten into the machine through the prize hole, reports KLKN-TV in Lincoln.
(Jolie Lee. Missing Neb. boy, 3, found in toy claw machine. USA Today. April 16, 2014.)

clemency

President Obama has shaved a few years off the sentence of a federal inmate who mistakenly received a longer prison term because of a typo – a typo that would have meant three-and-a-alf more years in prison if it hadn't been caught.
(Obama corrects record for inmate given extra prison time over typo in paperwork. Fox News. April 15, 2014.)

The judge said the only way for the mistake to be fixed was through clemency, which Obama granted Tuesday. The White House said Obama decided to grant clemency because it was the only way to correct the mistake.
(ibid.)

― hangry

A quick candy bar may stave off more than hunger. It could prevent major fights between husbands and wives, at least if a new study that used voodoo dolls is right.

That’s because low blood sugar can make spouses touchy, researchers propose.

In fact, it can make them "hangry," a combination of hungry and angry, said Ohio State University psychology researcher Brad Bushman.

"We need glucose for self-control," said Bushman, lead author of the study, which was released Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. "Anger is the emotion that most people have difficulty controlling."
(Seth Borenstein. Study: Snack might help avoid fight with spouse. The Associated Press. April 14, 2014.)

The highest beef prices in almost three decades are causing sticker shock for both consumers and restaurant owners - and relief isn't likely anytime soon.

A dwindling number of cattle and growing export demand from countries such as China and Japan have caused the average retail cost of fresh beef to climb to $5.28 a pound in February, up almost a quarter from January and the highest price since 1987.
(Beef prices sizzle to 27-year high. The Houston Chronicle. April 13, 2014.)

sticker shock

Chicagoans to get sticker shock from heating bills

Heating bills in Chicago are going way up, both next month and also next year if Peoples Gas has its way.

― signature

(Reuters) - U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius is resigning after overseeing the botched rollout of President Barack Obama's signature healthcare law, a White House official said on Thursday.
(Roberta Ampton. Health secretary resigns after Obamacare launch woes. Reuters. April 10, 2014.)

The Midtown pinstripes crowd has never stopped dropping by Maloney & Porcelli for that "great ball of meat," as Ms. Reichl described it, or for the restaurant's other signature dish, the "angry" lobster, both of which were conceived by the now-famous chef David Burke.
(New York Times. 2012.)

Mighty Mouse

SAN DIEGO – Honda is about to unleash a new, more upscale version of its smallest and cheapest car, the Fit, with hopes it could be the Mighty Mouse here to save the day.
(Chris Woodyard. Will little Fit power Honda’s comeback? USA Today. April 9, 2014.)

the Mighty Mouse

loggerhead

France and Rwanda at loggerheads on 20th anniversary of genocide

Painstaking efforts to heal the deep divisions between France and Rwanda over French actions during the Rwandan genocide have been severely set back by an angry diplomatic dispute on the 20th anniversary of the massacres.
(Financial Times. April 7, 2014.)

at loggerheads

Despite the fact that the shoal sits about 140 miles from the Philippines main island, Beijing says it and the surrounding waters belong to China. China's claims to the resource-rich South China Sea has increasingly put Beijing at loggerheads with Vietnam, where the South China Sea is known as the East Sea, as well as the Philippines.

make out

How are you making out in[or with] your new job?

WASHINGTON – If it isn't Rule No. 1 at freshman orientation for Congress, it should be: Don't make out with your congressional staffers in view of surveillance video.

Rep. Vance McAllister, a freshman Louisiana Republican who campaigned on his religious values, got caught on camera locking lips with his district office scheduler, according to a local newspaper paper.

On grainy surveillance video that appears to have been shot outside his district office, the married McAllister can be seen kissing his blonde district director, Melissa Anne Hixon Peacock, the Ouachita Citizen reported.

Recorded two days before Christmas, the video shows the two embracing and make out for nearly 30 seconds, before strolling inside McAllister's Monroe, La. district office.
(Geoff Earle. Congressman pal of ‘Duck Dynasty’ star ‘sorry’ after DC tryst revealed. New York Post. April 7, 2014.)

coop

Coop

Teenage boys cooped up in their bedrooms playing computer games have weaker bones than those who enjoy the outdoors, researchers have warned, Daily Mail reports.

Boys who spend more time on the computer, game console or in front of the TV have lower bone mineral density than girls or than boys who enjoy the outdoors.

It means that in later life they face an increased risk of fractures and osteoporosis. Skeletons grow continuously from birth to the end of the teenage years reaching peak bone mass – maximum strength and size – in early adulthood. Along with nutritional factors, physical activity can greatly impact on this process.
(Teens spending more time playing PC games have weaker bones. Daily Mail. April 7, 2014.)

jog

The FBI has appealed for the public's help in tracking down a dangerous child predator caught on video sexually abusing a young boy.

The man, known only as John Doe 28, was discovered in a downloaded video in November 2012 by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC).

The NCMEC and the FBI's Violent Crimes Against Children program have enhanced screen grabs from the sickening film to help provide any clues that may lead to his identification.

Authorities hope details such as the picture hanging on the wall behind the man along with the blue chair in the images may jog someone's memory.
(James Nye. Do you know this man? FBI appeals to the public to help find pedophile 'John Doe 28' caught on video abusing young boy. The Daily Mail. April 3, 2014.)

jog someone's memory

Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg reaped a £1.98 billion gain last year by exercising stock options in the social networking company he founded at Harvard University.

The windfall saddled Mr Zuckerberg with a huge tax bill, even though he limited his Facebook salary to just $1 (60p), like many company founders who have become wealthy on the back of their early stakes, according to new documents.
(Facebook founder’s £2bn windfall from stock options. Herald Scotland. April 2, 2014.)

windfall

― lol

Best and worst April Fools' jokes of 2014

We are LOLing at all of the cute and clever April Fools jokes out there today!
(Nora Barak. Best and worst April Fools’ jokes of 2014. New York Post. April 1, 2014.)

Laugh out loud
(あるいはlaughing out loud)

qwerty

File the QWERTY keyboard in the same category as lithium-ion batteries, compact discs, and the internal combustion engine—they're all dated technologies that are increasingly out of step with our rapidly evolving tech universe.

Most would agree that typing is one of the most annoying aspects of mobile phone UIs—it’s slow, awkward, and anything but ergonomic. The situation is only marginally better on tablets. It's exactly why manufacturers have created the "hybrid" trend, giving people the option to use a physical keyboard when it's needed and touch when it's not. Microsoft’s Surface tablets, for example, can be equipped with a couple different compact QWERTY keyboards.
(Tyler Wells Lynch. How today's designers are crafting the perfect keyboard for a mobile world. Reviewed.com. March 31, 2014.)

Merriam Webster Online

a standard typewriter or computer keyboard -- called also QWERTY keyboard

from the first six letters in the second row of the keyboard
