宇宙で溺死する可能性？ ― slosh

NASAの国際宇宙ステーションでイタリア人の宇宙飛行士が宇宙遊泳中に溺れかける、という衝撃の事故があったということです。

宇宙で溺れるって一体どういうこと！？と思うのは私だけではないかと思いますが、記事を読むと実際に起きた（起きかけた）話のようです。


An Italian astronaut who nearly drowned in his helmet during a spacewalk has told of how he felt all alone and frantically tried to come up with a plan to save himself.

Luca Parmitano described how he was unable to see as the water sloshed around in his helmet during a spacewalk outside the International Space Station.

"But worse than that, the water covers my nose - a really awful sensation that I make worse by my vain attempts to move the water by shaking my head," the former test pilot wrote.
"By now, the upper part of the helmet is full of water and I can't even be sure that the next time I breathe, I will fill my lungs with air, and not liquid."

このイタリア人宇宙飛行士の説明によると遊泳中に水がヘルメットに入り込んできて、鼻や耳に入り込んでくるわ、視界は塞がれるわでパニックになったということです。

原因は生命維持のためにしょっていたバックパックから水が漏れだしたことによるようですが、それ以上の詳しい原因はまだ分かっていないそうです。

高い技術と完璧なオペレーションというイメージがあるNASAですが、こんなことが起こり得るというのは怖い話です。

さて、今日の単語、"slosh"ですが、見慣れない単語ですね。

辞書を引くと、"slop"と"slush"の混成による、とあり、いわゆるかばん語の一種のようです。
