フリーミアム（freemium）という単語をご存知でしょうか？私は初めて見ました。そのスペルから、"free"と"premium"の合成による単語（つまり、かばん語）だと想像がつきましたが、その意味するところは判然としませんでした。
それは恐らく、"premium"という単語の意味するところをよく理解していなかったからだと思います。

とあるように、形容詞的に用いられています。
フリーミアム（freemium）とは、簡単に言ってしまうと“基本無料、オプション有料”というサービスのことを指すようです。下記は、Allaboutのサイトからの引用です。
A freemium app or game is a business model where the application is given away for free, but the customer can spend money on various enhancements to the game. It has become a popular model on both smartphones and tablets like the iPad as well as becoming a prevailing feature among social games. In recent years, the freemium model has also invaded massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs), with games like Everquest 2 and Lord of the Rings Online going free-to-play under the freemium model.
Freemium is a combination of the words "free" and "premium".

"premium"の意味をよく理解していなかった、と書きましたが、日本語でも“プレミアム”というカタカナが流行っていて、何となく分かったような気になっていましたが、そのイメージは高級、贅沢、ワンランク上の、といったものです。通常（品、サービス）よりちょっと高級志向、という意味合いで使われていることがほとんどではないでしょうか？
英単語の"premium"を改めて確認すると、割増金（a sum over and above a regular price paid chiefly as an inducement or incentive）という意味があることが分かります。
"freemium"における、"premium"とは要は割増金のことです。タブレット端末やスマホを所有していませんのでフリーミアムのサービスを利用したこともありませんが、無料でダウンロードできたとしても、使い込もうとすれば割増金を支払うことになるわけで、タダより高いものはない、という感じがします。
ビジネスモデルとして流行っているのもよく分かる気がします。
カタカナで言われる“プレミアム～”も、実は割り増しを正当化する巧妙なロジック、と言えなくもないのでは。
