"sixty-four-dollar question"という表現をご存知でしょうか？そのまま訳せば、64ドルの（価値がある！？）質問事項、ということになります。

ランダムハウス英和辞書によると、


非常に重大な（決定的な関心を集める）問題


とあります。Merriam Websterでは、


a crucial question expressing the basic issue on a problematical subject


と定義されており、語源解説には、


so called fr. the fact that $64 was the highest award in the CBS radio quiz show “Take It or Leave It” (1941–48)


とあることから、"question"というのはクイズ番組の問題のことで、64ドルは正答だった場合の賞金であることが分かります。

"$64 question"と表記されることもあります。

ところでなぜ64ドルという中途半端な（？）数字なのでしょうか？

答えは、件のクイズ番組では正答を重ねる毎に賞金が$1、$2、$4、$8、$16、・・・と倍増していき、$64が最大だったということです。

ちなみに、現代では$64は大金ではありませんが、この表現の名残なのか、"$64,000 question"という表現もあるそうです。
