sidestep

RENO, Nev. — Apple, the world’s most profitable technology company, doesn’t design iPhones here. It doesn’t run AppleCare customer service from this city. And it doesn’t manufacture MacBooks or iPads anywhere nearby.

Yet, with a handful of employees in a small office here in Reno, Apple has done something central to its corporate strategy: it has avoided millions of dollars in taxes in California and 20 other states.

Apple’s headquarters are in Cupertino, Calif. By putting an office in Reno, just 200 miles away, to collect and invest the company’s profits, Apple sidesteps state income taxes on some of those gains.

California’s corporate tax rate is 8.84 percent. Nevada’s? Zero.
(How Apple Sidesteps Billions in Taxes. The New York Times. April 28, 2012.)

Bridezilla.

A scheming bridezilla who pretended she was a cancer patient to bilk thousands in donations for her wedding pleaded guilty yesterday — but will likely avoid prison time as part of her deal.

Jessica Vega will have to pay back $13,368 she scammed from big-hearted donors, who showered her with rings, food, gifts and a wedding dress after she told her tall tale about wanting to experience a lavish wedding before dying from terminal leukemia.

The 25-year-old Orange County mom faced up to 20 years in prison, but under her plea deal, she will avoid prison if she pays back all her victims.
(Todd Venezia. Fake-cancer bridezilla must reimburse scam victims $13K for wedding. The New York Post. April 26, 2012.)

The word "bridezilla" is a portmanteau for a difficult bride, combined with "Godzilla."
(Wikipedia.)

a colloquial term for a difficult bride

― acquit

TOKYO — Ichiro Ozawa, the veteran Japanese lawmaker who engineered the ruling party's rise to power, was acquitted Thursday in a political funding scandal that has damaged his chances of becoming prime minister.

The scandal also cost Ozawa his membership in the ruling Democratic Party of Japan, though he continued to wield great influence as a political power broker. The acquittal means his membership could be reinstated, allowing him to exert even more sway.

The 69-year-old was charged last year with overseeing false accounting by his former aides in a murky 2004 land deal. Prosecutors claimed the three aides, who were convicted last year and have since appealed, acted under Ozawa's orders, but the Tokyo District Court said it found no evidence of that.
(Mari Yamaguchi. Japan political power broker acquitted in scandal. Atlanta Journal Constitution. April 25, 2012.)

quit oneself of doubts(疑いを晴らす)

Obama blames Secret Service hooker scandal on 'a couple of knuckleheads'

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — President Obama blamed the Colombian prostitution scandal that has rattled the US Secret Service on "a couple of knuckleheads," during a taped appearance on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" that will air Tuesday night.

"The Secret Service, these guys are incredible," Obama said during an exchange with Fallon on the incident. "They protect me, they protect Michelle, they protect our girls."

"They do a great job. So a couple of knuckleheads shouldn't detract from what they do, but what these guys were thinking I don't know," Obama said. "That's why they're not there anymore."
(Obama blames Secret Service hooker scandal on 'a couple of knuckleheads'. New York Post. April 24, 2012.)

Informal. A stupid person; a blockhead

"Even if I wasn't involved, I'd think it was a great story," Kindle said. "You've got a bunch of knuckleheads running around playing in the rain because they love baseball. It's a writer's dream."
(The New York Times. 2006.)

― outlive

MEN will soon be outliving women for the first time since records began after abandoning unhealthy, macho lifestyles.

If you're a boy born in 2000 and you make it to 30, you can expect to match girls of the same age by living to the ripe old age of 87.1.

Researchers predict younger males will then go on to surpass the life spans of their female counterparts.
(Men will soon outlive women for the first time since records began. Herald Sun. April 24, 2012.)

― debug

Starbucks de-bugs its menu offerings That's the latest score, as Starbucks has made an unusually rapid reversal in how it colors its Strawberry Frappuccinos -- and some of its other foods and drinks. Just weeks after the world's largest coffee chain took serious PR heat from vegan groups and public relations gurus for switching to commonly-used cochineal beetles to color its Strawberry Frappuccinos, the company's U.S. president, Cliff Burrows, now says that bugs are coming out and tomato-based extract is coming in.
(Bruce Horovitz. Starbucks de-bugs its menu offerings. USA Today. April 19, 2012.)

(5) ― marathon

Paul Tagliabue had spent most of an early February week in a Chicago airport hotel, immersed in marathon negotiations to settle one of the thorniest issues in his seven-year reign as NFL commissioner.
(The Washington Post. 1996.)

In early November, a team that Bank of America put in place to oversee Merrill's transition spotted large losses as they grew on Merrill's books. Alarmed, bank executives held marathon meetings on the weekends around Thanksgiving. They contacted Mr. Herlihy with a pressing question: should Bank of America executives disclose Merrill's gaping losses to shareholders?
(The New York Times. 2009.)

Two-year-old Egyptian twins joined at the top of their heads were separated after a marathon surgery that began a day earlier and that took more than a year of planning.
(The Associated Press. 2003.)

(4) ― pack

Japan's Kawauchi led through 5 km, but he's just one of a very big pack.

Kilel, Davila and Cherop ran smart, disciplined races last year. The trio allowed New Zealand's Kim Smith to run away from the field over the first 18 miles. The pack caught up to Smith after the firehouse turn in Newton, and she dropped out of the race with a leg injury before the 20-mile mark.

(3) ― tailwind

Mosop set a personal best time of 2:03:06 in finishing second at last year's Boston Marathon, where times were not recognized by the track governing body because of tailwind and downhill layouts.
(Ethiopian Adhane wins Rotterdam Marathon. The Associated Press. April 15, 2012.)

And should the dollar continue to lose value against global currencies, domestic investors will be rewarded by moving some cash overseas, even if the underlying stock markets in those countries don't gain much ground. That's because, whenever the dollar loses value, it serves as a tailwind for Americans investing overseas. Each share of foreign stock that Americans own will become worth that many more dollars when the securities are eventually sold and repatriated back to the United States.
(The New York Times. 2007.)

(2) ― false start

London's 2012 Olympic rental market proves false start for landlords

Like plenty of their neighbours, Kate Greenslade and Gary Seabrook had heard the rumours. "There was a lot of talk that you could rent your place for £10,000 a week, that kind of figure," says Seabrook. "We thought we'd like to do a round-the-world trip, and this was an ideal opportunity."

The couple, who run a video production company together, have a bright, two-bedroom parkside flat a little over a mile from the Olympic stadium. But seven months after first putting the flat on a number of Olympic rentals websites, the couple this week dropped their price, from £3,000 a week, a figure arrived at by "pure guesswork", to £2,500. Despite plenty of inquiries about stays of two or three nights, and a booking for the week before the Olympics begin, no one has yet wanted to block book the property for the entire Games period – the only deal they will consider at present.

With the opening ceremony fast approaching, many homeowners are realising that the sublet bonanza promised by the Games may not be quite as lucrative as they expected.
(Esther Addley. London's 2012 Olympic rental market proves false start for landlords. The Guardian. April 1, 2012.)

PARIS (AP) — Kenya's Stanley Biwott and Ethiopia's Beyene Tirfi won the Paris marathon in record times on Sunday.

Biwott won in 2 hours, 5 minutes, 11 seconds, according to provisional times from the race organizer, beating the old mark of 2:05.47 set by Kenyan Vincent Kipruto in 2009.

Tirfi, who was third in 2010, dominated the women's race in 2:21.40 to surpass Ethiopian Astede Bayisa's mark of 2:22.02 from two years ago.

Biwott pulled ahead after about 18 miles, and he comfortably finished ahead of Ethiopians Raji Assefa, who had a new personal best of 2:06.23 and Sisay Jisa (2:06.26).
(Biwott, Tirifi win Paris marathon with new records. Seattlepi.com. April 15, 2012.)

In the Rotterdam Marathon, Yemane Adhane of Ethiopia pulled away from his countryman Getu Feleke in the final mile to win the men’s race by two seconds in 2 hours 4 minutes 48 seconds. Tiki Gelana of Ethiopia won the women’s race in a record 2:18:58, the fastest time of the year.
(Marathon Course Records Tumble. The New York Times. April 16, 2012.)

North Korean dynamics remain charged despite rocket fizzer

The apparent fizzer of the North Korean rocket launch does not change the dynamics of the regime defying international opinion.

Nor does a failure signal an end to the nuclear ambitions of the reclusive regime. Tests - even ones that go awry - are meant as learning exercises. There were plenty of failures in the missile development by other countries too.

Besides, in the tightly-controlled North Korean media, the rocket will be seen to be a fantastic success and that is ultimately the main audience for the regime.
(North Korean dynamics remain charged despite rocket fizzer. The Sydney Morning Herald. April 13, 2012.)

North Korea plans to launch its latest rocket across the waters of the Far East, perhaps by April 16. The plan has already drawn the desired response in the region: Fear and, most of all, more attention on North Korea. Nations are lining up to condemn the provocative act, which violates a United Nations resolution. Washington is divided over how to respond. Journalists are playing up the implied threat. Japan may even shoot down the three-stage Unha-3 rocket if it strays close to its shores.
(North Korea rocket launch: fireworks of fear. The Christian Science Monitor. April 10, 2012.)

And just to make sure it is being feared and not ignored, North Korea may also soon conduct a third nuclear test, according to reports. The first two tests, in 2006 and 2009, weren’t a technical success. And North Korea’s previous rocket launches, in 1998 and 2009, weren’t great hits either. Such actions fit a long pattern of brinkmanship, bellicosity, and blackmail by the Pyongyang regime. Fortunately, the Kim family dynasty has been relying on waves of provocative acts long enough that the rest of the world has caught on. Even its only ally, China, now sees through the obvious childish behavior.
(ibid.)

― bitewing

PATIENTS who frequently have X-ray examinations of their teeth may be at increased risk of developing brain cancer, prompting calls for dentists to avoid unnecessary overuse of the scans.

US researchers who conducted the largest study of its type into the links between dental X-rays and cancer found people with meningioma were more than twice as likely to report having had a type of X-ray called a bitewing, in which an X-ray film encased in a T-shaped plastic sleeve is held inside the cheek while the patient bites on the stem of the T.

Children under 10 were found to have a 40 per cent increased risk of meningioma if they had had a bitewing yearly or more often, while adults aged 20-49 had a 60 per cent increased risk for bitewings less than annually, and a 90 per cent increased risk if done more frequently.
(Adam Cresswell. Study links dental X-rays to cancer. The Australian. April 11, 2012.)

米大統領選の話題 ― call back the hounds

Campaign: Santorum’s daughter expected to be released from hospital soon

WASHINGTON — GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum’s campaign says his hospitalized daughter is recovering and could be released soon.

Santorum spokesman Hogan Gidley said Monday that 3-year-old Bella could be released from a northern Virginia hospital by the end of the day.
(Kasie Hunt. Campaign: Santorum’s daughter expected to be released from hospital soon. Chicago Sun Times. April 9, 2012.)

Santorum plans a rally in Bedford and then attend an event called "American Heartland Conversation on Faith, Family, and American Values" in Lancaster.

Front-runner Mitt Romney`s campaign today pulled a $2.9 million negative ad highlighting Santorum`s 18-point loss in the 2006 U.S. Senate race in Pennsylvania, which was to begin airing this morning.

The Romney campaign said it asked TV stations to air a substitute ad, "out of respect" for his rival`s family during Bella`s hospitalization.
(Salena Zito. Santorums hope to take daughter home from hospital today. Pittsburgh Tribune. April 9, 2012.)

With Rick Santorum staying off the campaign trail for another day to be with his hospitalized toddler, front-runner Mitt Romney has suspended the barrage of negative campaign ads he’s been airing. That seems like a humane move, and he seems like the sort of guy who’d do it for that reason alone. But it may not be the only reason for Romney to call back the hounds.
(Jon Healey. Maybe Mitt Romney should stop the attack ads, period. Los Angels Times. April 9, 2012.)

ただし、引用部分、"it may not be the only reason for Romney to call back the hounds"、ですので、実は様々な思惑と打算が働いているようです。

eggstravaganza?

Inside the Beltway: Time for the annual White House Eggstravaganza

There will be a bipartisan cast of thousands at the White House on Monday, liberating all the wonks, officials and strategists from policy and campaign doldrums for a few hours, anyway. The 134th annual White House Easter Egg Roll is set to host 30,000 guests on the South Lawn to promote “health and wellness” through sport, dancing, cooking, storytelling and, uh, an egg roll. The Easter Bunny himself has many extra helpers this year.

As in 61 costumed characters with Hollywood roots or educational intent who will also gambol on the famous green. Some are familiar: Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Charlie Brown and Smokey Bear, who lost his middle “the” some time ago, though he now has his own phone app courtesy of the ever vigilant Ad Council, the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters.
(Jennifer Harper. Inside the Beltway: Time for the annual White House Eggstravaganza. The Washington Times. April 8, 2012.)

― list

The long, lonely voyage of the Japanese ghost ship is over.

A U.S. Coast Guard cutter unleashed cannon fire on the abandoned 164-foot Ryou-Un Maru on Thursday, ending a journey that began when last year's tsunami dislodged it and set it adrift across the Pacific Ocean.

It sank into waters more than 1,000 feet deep in the Gulf of Alaska, more than 150 miles from land.

The crew pummeled the ghost ship with high explosive ammunition and, soon after, the Ryou-Un Maru burst into flames, began to take on water and list, officials said.

A huge column of smoke could be seen over the gulf.
(US Coast Guard sinks Japanese "ghost ship". Christian Science Monitor. April 5, 2012.)

hard hat

House ‘snaps,’ killing hard hat

A construction worker whose crew was putting an addition on a Brooklyn home was crushed to death yesterday when the poorly designed structure suddenly collapsed, authorities said.

Workers were hammering on the roof of 40 Frank Court in Gerritsen Beach at around 11 a.m. when the home completely came apart, witnesses said.

“I heard a loud groan, and it was like it just snapped,” said Loretta Raven-Frauenberg, who watched the horrific scene unfold from an upstairs bedroom next door.

“I saw the house shift, and the whole top of the house just snapped off.”

City’s New Taxis Are to Come Equipped With All the Bells and Whistles

It’s not just the surprisingly neutral smell that differentiates New York’s Taxi of Tomorrow from its taxi of yesterday, the Ford Crown Victoria. And although the new Nissan taxis resemble minivans, their sliding doors are not so heavy that riders get an arm-toning workout opening them.

Riders will quickly learn that when the new Nissan NV 200 taxicabs appear on the streets late next year, there may be more to do inside than stare at the meter.

They can adjust the heat and air-conditioning with a passenger-regulated system, chat with the driver through an intercom and even gaze up through tinted skylights at the city views passing by above.
(Christine Haughney. The New York Times. April 3, 2012.)

そのことを、"come equipped with all the bells and whistles"と表現しています。

items or features that are useful or decorative but not essential : frills

crystal ball

A new study warns that scientists can't predict most diseases for most people by mapping their genomes, raising a flag about a nascent technology that has been expected to ring in an era of tailored treatments.

Mapping a person's genome, or genetic blueprint, "is not a crystal ball," said Bert Vogelstein, co-author of the study and professor of oncology at Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center. "And this is a reality check."
(Gautam Naik. Gene Maps Are No Cure-All. The Wall Street Journal. April 2, 2012.)

Gene Maps Are No Cure-All"(遺伝子マッピングは万能薬ならず)にしても、"not a crystal ball"にしても、そのことを指しています。

― whopper

Coming up With a New Menu Is a Whopper of a Task

When Burger King set about to fix its ailing empire, the fast food giant started by scrutinizing everything on the menu — even the mayonnaise.

A group of Burger King executives and franchisees last year sat through a lengthy presentation complete with charts and graphs on how oils and eggs affect the quality of the spread. A blind taste test of 30 varieties followed. The verdict: They liked the one Burger King was already using.

"That was actually a pretty hard day," recalls John Koch, Burger King's executive chef.
(Candice Choi. Coming up with a new menu is a whopper of a task. ABC News. April 2, 2012.)

なので、"a whopper of a task"という表現を見て、おや?

Three-quarters of crops depend on insect pollinators, and the number of their visits influences the size of the fruit. Dudareva muses that better-smelling plants could score more pollination and produce better yields. A watermelon flower needs about a dozen visits from pollen-carrying insects to develop a real whopper of a fruit, and a strawberry needs some 25 visits to reach prime berry size.
(Science News. 2002.)

She'd ignored Tink's advice and sailed straight into a storm that had flipped her boat upside-down and left her pinned inside the cabin for most of the night. Now she had a whopper of a headache, and her body was black and blue from the battering she had taken.
(Ben Sherwood. The death and life of Charlie St. Could. 2004.)

"She's frugal," "religiously" pays off her credit-card bills, and this year she paid off her car, an' 88 Nissan Sentra. But she incurred a whopper of a bill, with a $ 92,000 mortgage on the modern, semi-suburban townhouse she moved into last March. "
(Houston Chronicle. 1992.)
