K (strikeout)

Hideki Irabu never became what many thought he would be.

Irabu, the former New York Yankees fireballer from Japan, was found dead in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., on Wednesday. Most reports say of an apparent suicide. He was 42.

It didn't last, but Hideki Irabu and Yankees owner George Steinbrenner were all smiles during the Japanese fireballer's first days in pinstripes.

After the shock and sorrow wears off, some will be able to trivialize Irabu's baseball career in America. Let's not forget, he was supposed to be Nolan Ryan, just much faster. Yes, the hype was working overtime in 1997 before he made his major league debut with the Yankees.

At 6-foot-4, 240 pounds, Irabu was dealing. He fanned nine of the first 19 Tigers he faced. His strikeout pitch was the split-fingered fastball. I can remember the crowd going wild after every punch out. It was a magical night in the Big Ball Orchard in the South Bronx.

Irabu pitched 6 2/3 strong innings. He allowed two runs on five hits and four walks.

Like Mets fans did for Dwight Gooden, nicknamed Dr. K when he broke into the league, fans at Yankee Stadium tracked Irabu's strikeouts with seven sets of K cards, including three in Japanese.
(Rob Parker. Hideki Irabu gave us night to remember. ESPNNew York.com. July 28, 2011)

― thin edge of wedge

Could Google have caught the Norway killer?

With all the data Google collects about us and our search histories, could the company use its technical prowess to help catch terrorists and mass murderers before they commit crimes?

Norweigan daily Dagbladet reported that terrorist Anders Breivik spent 200 days searching Google for terms such as "how to make a bomb" before he went on his rampage.

Already Google uses data from searches to improve its targeted advertising and search rankings - and even to track the spread of the flu - leading academic ideas site The Conversation to ask the question "Why didn't Google catch the Norway killer?"
(Asher Moses. Could Google have caught the Norway killer? Sydney Morning Herald. July 28, 2011.)

Speaking to the website, Charles Sturt University computer science lecturer Craig Wright said he expected people in European countries to call for search engines to monitor user behaviour as a result of the attacks.

He said it "would be possible, but extremely difficult" for Google to monitor searches and raise red flags for users who frequently and repeatedly perform suspicious searches.

In the case of targeted advertising, if Google's algorithm got it wrong the worst outcome would be slightly reduced profits. But when picking out terrorists there is a far lower tolerance for errors.

And the idea of Google regularly monitoring search terms without a court order would raise significant privacy issues.

Danny Sullivan, editor-in-chief of Search Engine Land, raised the point that searching for something - for example bomb making instructions - wasn't the same as actually committing the criminal act.

And he also said that searching for mass murderers could be the thin edge of the wedge.

色々と議論がある中、最終的には、"searching for mass murderes could be the thin edge of the wedge"ということです。そこで今日の表現、"thin edge of the wedge"ですが、辞書では、

Among those listing substantial property holdings or income from stock dividends in 2002 are Sens. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn.; Richard Shelby, R-Ala.; Bob Graham, D-Fla.; and Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif. Others with eye-popping numbers included Sens. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., who listed four family trusts worth up to $45 million; John D. Rockefeller IV, D-W.Va., who reported three blind trusts worth from $80 million to more than $125 million; and banking heir Peter Fitzgerald, R-Ill., whose assets include up to $50 million in Bank of Montreal stock.
(Associated Press. 2003.)

A couple of the best friends I've made in the real estate business are people I never sold a house to, and who, by the end of our time together, I didn't want to sell a house to (though I probably would've). One was an African-American lawyer, Geoff Murphy, who was determined to buy an eye-popping mansion at an eye-popping price, slap in the middle of the (all-white) Seminary section of my former home town of Haddam, New Jersey.
(Richard Ford. The Shore (Short Story). New Yorker. 2004.)

Her fabric collection is on loan to the Atlanta History Center. Here a visitor can, with permission, sift through drawers of her weavings, feeling the slippery silks and chamois-soft wools. In one drawer is a stack of scarves, where the eye-popping colors range through celery, eggplant, cranberry, raspberry, pokeberry, mandarin, sea foam, split pea and pumpkin.

I may be wrong but I suspect that for all of the tabloid talk of divorce, my situation is the more common situation among American husbands. We are married to wives better -- far better -- than we deserve.
(Benjamin J. Stein. Unshared Sacrifice. American Spectator. 2005.)

When Winfrey started in the talk-show business 20 years ago, her goal was to beat Phil Donahue, then the reigning talk-show champ. As the Jerry Springer era of tabloid talk shows came into favor, she vowed to use her show to promote good, not sleaze.
(Ann Oldenburg. The divine Miss Winfrey? USA Today. 2006.)

Even by the standards of British tabloid journalism, the News of the World newspaper may have finally gone too far. # Clive Goodman, the royalty correspondent at the paper, owned by News Corp., was charged late Wednesday along with one other person for allegedly hacking into cellphone messages. Police have been investigating whether the men accessed the phones of the royal family or their staff as well as other celebrities and politicians.

A student proves that even couponing newbies can save hundreds of dollars like expert couponers do. Lauren Liggett, a college student and a newbie at coupon clipping, tells how she has been saving $300 dollars every month by using her coupons.

Although the Liggetts are not having financial difficulties, Lauren still wants to practice couponing in order to help her parents out, who are currently paying for her college education. Her mom is a realtor and her dad is working part-time as a salesman for cars (her dad is also a retired engineer for IBM). Combined, Lauren’s parents have a low-six-figure income.
(Student Saves $300 Through Couponing. Grocery.com.)

Sacramento -- As California's elected leaders took drastic steps to cut spending last year, the state was paying hundreds of its workers six-figure earnings that far exceeded base salaries, according to newly released compensation data for public employees. The data, compiled by state Controller John Chiang, show that more than 500 state employees made more than $240,000 before taxes in 2010. The controller listed last year's pay for all 256,222 state workers on his website, but did not include their names.
(Marisa Lagos. Hundreds of Calif. state workers earn 6 figures. San Francisco Chronicle. July 6, 2011.)

In Tokyo’s bustling Akihabara electronics district, one of the hottest products isn’t a new game console or tablet computer. It’s a Geiger counter, sold under Shanghai Ergonomics Detecting Instrument’s DP802i brand name, that costs ¥65,000 ($800). That’s double the price tag in China. And unlike units sold on the mainland, the models hawked in Tokyo come without a box, warranty, or return policy.

Because of worries about radioactive contaminants since the Fukushima nuclear reactor meltdown in March, Geiger counters, which measure radiation levels, have sold out even as prices have quadrupled in Tokyo.

Tokyo residents snapped up the devices after reactor meltdowns at Tokyo Electric Power’s Fukushima Dai-Ichi plant, the worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl. Radiation readings in the capital soared twentyfold and tap water was temporarily deemed unsafe for infants, while food products including spinach, mushrooms, bamboo shoots, tea, milk, plums, and fish were found to be contaminated. The result: Dosimeters sold out as far away as Germany. “It was absolutely a seller’s market,” Huang says, with some manufacturers moving a year’s worth of inventory in a week.
(Pavel Alpeyev. Japan's Seller's Market in Geiger Counter. Business Week. July 21, 2011.)

― sweltering

A heat wave blanketed Kentucky just in time for high school athletes to begin summer practices.

The mandatory KHSAA dead period ended July 15, allowing fall teams to begin organized workouts. But sweltering temperatures make getting things underway easier said than done. Coaches must carefully monitor heat indexes, enforce heat related precautions, and alter or cancel workouts based on strictly defined criteria.

It's not just about heat. Humidity factors into the equation. On Wednesday at noon, the temperature in Lexington was just 84 degrees, but with a 74 percent relative humidity, the heat index stood at 92 degrees.

According to KHSAA rules, school officials must cancel all outdoor activities if the heat index rises above 104 degrees. Even when temperatures don't rise to that level, coaches and athletic trainers must carefully monitor athletes, allow for water breaks every 30 minutes, and constantly recheck temperatures and relative humidities.
(Mike Maharrey. High School Coaches Dealing With Heat As Practices Begin. LEX18.com. July 20, 2011.)

Dieters beware: Offerings at popular restaurants may have more calories than what's stated on menus or company websites.

A team of scientists purchased items from 42 fast-food and sit-down eateries in Indiana, Arkansas and Massachusetts, then measured the calories they contained. The list of stops on their calorie-busting tour included Burger King, Olive Garden, Outback Steakhouse, McDonald's, Taco Bell and Chuck E. Cheese's.

Only 7% of the 269 foods tested were within 10 calories of what the restaurants stated, the scientists found. And almost 20% packed at least 100 more calories than what was indicated. Over the course of a year, an extra 100 calories daily can add up to 10 to 15 pounds, said study lead author Susan Roberts, a senior scientist at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University.
(Daniela Hernandez. Restaurant calorie counts not always accurate. Los Angels Times. July 20, 2011.)

“And almost 20% packed at least 100 more calories than what was indicated.”

So Destiny pulled the rug out from under another poor, unsuspecting victim.

Hope Solo reacts after the U.S. soccer team lost the Women's World Cup in a penalty shootout.

Hope it's satisfied.

In the pictures from the women's soccer World Cup, the American lasses stood in a line after the final looking as if they were in a queue for root canal work.

But everyone should have seen this coming, once that D word started getting bandied about.

In regards to Destiny, the United States had a lot of inspiring stories, but nothing to match a tsunami and threat of nuclear reactor cataclysm.

Nothing to rise to the level of carrying the hopes and hearts of a badly wounded country.

Japan was probably the easiest decision Destiny had in months. And we know it never loses once it takes sides. No wonder that when the Americans started with their penalty kicks, the net seemed to shrink to the size of a croquet wicket.

And Abby Wambach would mention later to reporters, "Evidently, it wasn't meant to be.''

She and her teammates had been Destinized.
(Mike Lopresti. Destiny's latest victim: The U.S. women's soccer team. USA Today. July 19, 2011.)

Destiny’s latest victim: The U.S. Women’s soccer team

So Destiny pulled the rug out from under another poor, unsuspecting victim.

pull the rug out from under (person)”とは、”(突然)支持することをやめる、援助を打ち切る”という成句です。"

Team of destiny turns out to be Japan

Japan won its first World Cup, defeating the U.S. in penalty kicks 3-1. The game was deadlocked at 2-all after 120 minutes of soccer, sending it into penalty kicks for only the second time in history.

The words "team of destiny" had been thrown around in the days leading up to the final, as if the stars had been aligning in the cloudy German heavens for the Americans to win this title.

But maybe destiny was aligning to bring the World Cup, for the first time, to Asia. Maybe this is the just reward for Japanese captain Homare Sawa, who wins her first World Cup in her fifth trip to the tournament.

Maybe this is a just reward for a team that dedicated its performance to its country, recovering from the horrific natural disasters of March 11.
(Joanne C. Gerstner. Team of destiny turns out to be Japan. ESPN. July 17, 2011.)

GOLDMAN: What's next is the semifinals against France on Wednesday. And then if they win that, and they certainly do seem like a team of destiny right now, they will play the winner of the Japan versus Sweden semifinal. And the U.S. may win its first women's World Cup since 1999.
(Transcript: U.S. Beats Brazil In Women's World Cup Game. NPR News. July 11, 2011.)

Eight months after having to win a playoff just to get to Germany, the Americans face Japan in the Women's World Cup final today in Frankfurt. A win would be the ultimate finish to their improbable journey, making the United States the first three-time champions and delighting a country of newfound fans.

"It's going to be a tough match like every other match has been, but I believe that we will find a way and it's our destiny to get it done," Carli Lloyd said Saturday after the team's last training session.
(U.S. team sees championship as 'our destiny'. San Francisco Chronicle. July 17, 2011.)

Team of destiny turns out to be Japan"、というのが今まさにしっくりと来ませんか?

― amnesia

“Google is changing your brain, study says...”

A new study confirms it: Google (GOOG) is altering your brain. More precisely, our growing dependence on the Internet has changed how -- and what -- our brains choose to remember.

When we know where to find information, we're less likely to remember it -- an amnesia dubbed "The Google Effect" by a team led by psychologist Betsy Sparrow of Columbia University.

Goodbye, soul-searching; hello, facts-at-fingertips.
(Lisa M. Krieger. Google is changing your brain, study says, and don't you forget it. San Jose Mercury News. July 15, 2011.)

The finding, published in Friday's issue of the journal Science, doesn't prove that Google, Yahoo (YHOO) or other search engines are making us dumber, as some have asserted. We're still capable of remembering things that matter -- and are not easily found online, Sparrow said.

Rather, it suggests that the human memory is reorganizing where it goes for information, adapting to new computing technologies rather than relying purely on rote memory. We're outsourcing "search" from our brains to our computers.
(ibid.)

“The Google Effect”

amnesty
mnemonic

The standard advice to drink eight glasses of water a day has been damned in one of the world's most esteemed medical journals, despite it being a recommendation of government health departments around the world.

"This is not only nonsense," Scottish GP, Margaret McCartney, writes in an opinion piece published in the latest British Medical Journal, it is "thoroughly debunked nonsense".

Dr McCartney dismissed dehydration concerns as a myth, writing that the true beneficiaries of the eight glasses a day mantra are the bottled water companies.
(Eight glasses of water advice 'nonsense.' Sydney Morning Herald. July 14, 2011.)

Britain's Hydration for Health initiative recommends drinking up to two litres (eight glasses) per day and claims that "even mild hydration plays a role in the development of various diseases."

But as Dr McCartney highlights, the initiative is sponsored by a "vested interest" - the French food manufacturer Danone, makers of Evian and Volvic bottled waters.
(ibid.)

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission has proposed new rules designed to make it more difficult for telephone carriers and other companies to insert mystery fees onto customers' phone bills.

The proposed rules, released by the FCC Tuesday, would require landline telephone carriers to notify customers at the point of sale and on each bill of the option to block third-party charges on their phone bills. The proposed rules would require both landline and mobile carriers to include notices on their phone bills and websites saying customers can file complaints about mystery fees with the FCC.

The commission's vote to launch a rulemaking proceeding is part of a larger effort to crack down on so-called cramming, the practice of sneaking charges onto customers' phone bills.

Many customers don't notice the crammed charges, the FCC has said. Crammers often avoid detection by charging a small amount -- sometimes as little as US $1.99 to each customer -- or describing charges in a way that make them appear to be from the phone companies for legitimate services, the FCC said.
(Grand Gross. FCC Proposes Rules to Combat Phone Cramming. PC World. July 13, 2011.)

so-called cramming, the practice of sneaking charges onto customers' phone bills

Customer materials must be available in Spanish. In addition to Spanish, all customer information must also be available in any language the retail electric provider uses to market its service. Watch out for slamming and cramming. These practices are illegal. Slamming is when a provider switches your service without your permission. Cramming is adding charges to your bill for services you did not request
(Houston Chronicle. 2001.)

breathalyzer

RIO DE JANEIRO — Former footballer and Brazilian politician Romario de Souza had his license suspended for five days after he refused to submit to a breathalyzer test at a Rio de Janeiro roadblock, according to reports by news site G1. Quoting official sources, G1 said the former player refused to take the breathalyzer test during a traffic stop performed in the early hours of Sunday by local authorities. As a result, Romario will have to pay a fine of about $600 and cannot drive for five days. (Romario's license revoked after refusing breathalyzer. AFP. July 11, 2011.)

― half-full glass

We like to think of ourselves as rational creatures. We watch our backs, weigh the odds, pack an umbrella. But both neuroscience and social science suggest that we are more optimistic than realistic. On average, we expect things to turn out better than they wind up being. People hugely underestimate their chances of getting divorced, losing their job or being diagnosed with cancer; expect their children to be extraordinarily gifted; envision themselves achieving more than their peers; and overestimate their likely life span (sometimes by 20 years or more).

The belief that the future will be much better than the past and present is known as the optimism bias. It abides in every race, region and socioeconomic bracket. Schoolchildren playing when-I-grow-up are rampant optimists, but so are grownups: a 2005 study found that adults over 60 are just as likely to see the glass half full as young adults.
(Tali Sharot. The Optimism Bias. Time. May 28, 2011.)

a 2005 study found that adults over 60 are just as likely to see the glass half full as young adults

The glass is half full.

full [empty]

KING: Do you miss...

RADZIWILL: Not being married?

KING: Yeah.

RADZIWILL Well, they each have their upsides.

KING: So you -- are you -- the glass is always half-full to you, right? You're a half-full glass person? I mean, you've known -- everything happens to you, you try to look for the better side of things. This is just a read.

RADZIWILL: Well, I just think that that's the best way to do it.
(CNN. 2001.)

後続の表現で、"try to look for the better side of things"とあります。

"My view of the City Opera is very positive," said Mr. Volpe. "If you look at opera companies in the United States, you see that the more companies there are, the better aware the public is, and that helps all companies. We know that many of our patrons go to the City Opera, and some of theirs come here. We don't see it as a problem." Miss Sills takes Mr. Volpe's observation a step further, offering the cheerful view that the half-empty glass is actually half full.
(Alan Kozinn. CLASSICAL MUSIC;City Opera Turns 50, But Who's Counting? The New York Times. 1993.)

The market is up 9% this year. Or is it?

For investors, there isn't an easy way of knowing for sure.

After Friday's drop, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the Standard & Poor's 500-stock index are 11% and 14% below their respective highs of Oct. 9, 2007.

Yet these numbers tell only part of the story. For most individual investors, getting a clear picture of where your portfolio stands isn't easy. The performance numbers cited above don't count dividends, which can influence returns significantly.
(Why We Can't Tell if the Market Is Half Empty or Half Full. The Wall Street Journal. July 9, 2011.)

正式名称は、The United Egg Producers。

Two groups that are usually squawking at each other — egg farmers and animal welfare advocates — announced an unusual agreement on Thursday to work together to seek a federal law that would require larger cages and other improved conditions for the nation’s 280 million laying hens.

The deal comes after the egg industry has been put increasingly on the defensive. Animal welfare groups have clandestinely recorded videos showing poor conditions on farms, and various states have sought to set more humane standards for hens. Egg producers have also been struggling to improve their image after tainted eggs from several farms in Iowa sickened thousands of people in a nationwide salmonella outbreak last year.
(William Neuman. Egg Producers and Humane Society Urging Federal Standard on Hen Cages. The New York Times. July 7, 2011.)

put on the defensive

The proposed federal standards would include cages that give hens up to 144 square inches of space each, compared with the 67 square inches that most hens have today. They would also include so-called habitat enrichments, like perches, scratching areas and nesting areas, that allow the birds to express natural behavior.
(ibid.)

havoc

wreak havoc

USAGE NOTE: Wreak is sometimes confused with wreck, perhaps because the wreaking of damage may leave a wreck: The storm wreaked (not wrecked) havoc along the coast. The past tense and past participle of wreak is wreaked, not wrought, which is an alternative past tense and past participle of work.
(The American Heritage Dictionary. 13th Edition.)

A severe weather warning remains in place for Sydney, the Snowy Mountains, south coast, Illawarra, Hunter and southern and central tablelands districts.

Felled trees have wreaked havoc - blocking roads and rail lines, damaging homes and trains and temporarily cutting water supply.
(NSW braces for more wild weather. ABC News. July 6, 2011.)

Reporter suspended for calling Obama a (bleep)
(David Jackson. Reporter suspended for calling Obama a (bleep). USA Today. June 30, 2011.)

Watch out for that live mike.

Mark Halperin, an MSNBC political analyst, was suspended today for calling President Obama a vile name while assessing Wednesday's news conference on the network's Morning Joe program.

"I thought he was kind of a d--- yesterday," Halperin said, apparently thinking the word would be bleeped out.

It wasn't.
(ibid.)

思いとどまらせる ― talk out of ~ing

(Reuters) - A French writer will file a legal complaint against former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn on Tuesday alleging that he tried to rape her more than eight years ago, her lawyer told Reuters.

Lawyer David Koubbi said the complaint by Tristane Banon, 32, a journalist and author, related to an incident that took place when she went to interview Strauss-Kahn, a former French finance minister, in an apartment in Paris.

"Tristane Banon will file a complaint on Tuesday for attempted rape in Paris," Koubbi said.

Under French law, a complaint of attempted rape can be brought up to 10 years after an alleged attack.

Koubbi had said several times in recent weeks that his client was considering taking action against Strauss-Kahn over the incident, which he said on Monday took place in early 2003, not in 2002 as had previously been reported.

Banon's mother Anne Mansouret, a Socialist councilor, has said she regrets talking her daughter out of filing a complaint at the time.
(Writer to file Strauss-Kahn rape complaint. Reuters. July 4, 2011.)

(Banon's mother) regrets talking her daughter out of filing a complaint at the time

out of ~ing"の反対で、"into ~ing"もあります。

spree

SEOUL, South Korea — A South Korean marine corporal killed four fellow soldiers and wounded another in a shooting spree on Monday that came amid heightened vigilance against North Korea.

The corporal, whom the Defense Ministry identified only by his last name, Kim, sprayed rifle bullets in his barracks on Gwanghwa Island, west of Seoul, Kim Min-seok, a ministry spokesman, told reporters. The island sits just 12 miles south of the western border of North Korea.
(Choe Sang-Hun. South Korean Soldier Kills 3 in Barracks Shooting. The New York Times. July 4, 2011.)

American Heritage Dictionary

1. A carefree, lively outing.
2. A drinking bout.
3. A sudden indulgence in or outburst of an activity. See synonyms at binge.

shopping spree

The sexual assault case against Dominique Strauss-Kahn is on the verge of collapse as investigators have uncovered major holes in the credibility of the housekeeper who charged that he attacked her in his Manhattan hotel suite in May, according to two well-placed law enforcement officials.

Although forensic tests found unambiguous evidence of a sexual encounter between Mr. Strauss-Kahn, a French politician, and the woman, prosecutors do not believe much of what the accuser has told them about the circumstances or about herself.

Since her initial allegation on May 14, the accuser has repeatedly lied, one of the law enforcement officials said.
(Strauss-Kahn Case Seen as in Jeopardy. The New York Times. June 30, 2011.)

”according to two well-placed law enforcement officials”

sources said...
