About 600 homes in Victoria's Mildura and Sunraysia region are without television after the federal government turned off their analog signal.

At 9am (AEST) on Wednesday analog television ceased broadcasting in the area, making it the first part of Australia to switch to the digital-only age.

Communications Minister Stephen Conroy said about one per cent of homes in the Mildura/Sunraysia region had indicated they weren't going to make the transition.

'Too old' beauty queen dethroned

A beauty queen who lied about her age and her place of residence has been forced to return her title.

Laura Anness, 27, had entered the Miss Cornwall contest for four years and won the 2010 event in Newquay before she was found out, The Cornish Guardian reports.

Contestants for the annual competition are supposed to be aged 17-24 and living, studying or working within the county.

Organisers Becky Chapman, 38, said: "I didn't think she looked older than 24. But when I was cleaning my office, I came across Miss Cornwall entry forms completed by Laura as far back as 2006.

"That year she'd put her age as 22, and again in 2007, in 2008, and in 2010. When I approached Laura about this, she came clean and admitted she'd lied about her age to follow her dream."
(Mayer Nissim. 'Too old' beauty queen dethroned. Digital Spy. June 29, 2010.)

TOKYO — Japan's police chief has vowed to smash the murky links between sumo and yakuza organised crime after a widening scandal over illegal gambling led to the arrest of a former wrestler.

The biggest scandal to tarnish Japan's ancient national sport in years has led big-name sponsors to pull out millions and put in doubt whether national broadcaster NHK will show the summer tournament next month.

Governing body the Japan Sumo Association has said 29 unnamed wrestlers had admitted to illegal gambling, although media reported that 36 others also had bet on cards, baseball, golf and other pursuits.

As investigators seek to untangle the links between the big boys of sumo and the bad boys of the Japanese mafia, police on Thursday arrested a former wrestler, Mitsutomo Furuichi, 38, on extortion charges.

― hinder

Michael Jackson's father will file a wrongful death lawsuit in federal court against Dr. Conrad Murray on Friday, the anniversary of the pop star's death, Joe Jackson's lawyer said.

The suit alleges that Murray gave paramedics and doctors false information about what drugs Michael Jackson had been given and hindered efforts to revive him in an ambulance and at UCLA Medical Center, according to a copy of the suit obtained by CNN.

A new year, another new Japanese prime minister. Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama's resignation makes him the fourth Japanese leader in four years to fall from power. What are the implications for the U.S.-Japan alliance?

Aggressive Chinese naval maneuvers in waters near Japan have also reminded Tokyo that Hatoyama's lofty rhetoric about "East Asian fraternity" has its limits. North Korean and Chinese bullying underscored how potentially risky Japan's alliance dispute with America was, and how necessary it was to move rapidly to repair it by agreeing to the U.S. troop realignment on Okinawa. But Hatoyama's abrupt about-face in securing it only hastened his political downfall.

We've gotten several phone calls from Japanese reporters about Wednesday's resignation of Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama after just eight months in office. The reporters implied that a mid-April Loop column -- the one dubbing him "the biggest loser" at President Obama's nuclear summit and referring to him as "hapless" and "increasingly loopy" -- somehow hastened his departure.

Seriously, now. We have photographic evidence that blatant sartorial criminality was without question the proximate cause of his demise -- okay, in addition to that dispute with Washington over the U.S. military base in Okinawa. A photo taken April 4, 10 days before the column in question appeared, shows the prime minister at what was described as a "meet the people" barbecue decked out in a 1980s multicolored shirt.
(Al Kamen. Hatoyama Didn't Dress for Success. The Washington Post. June 5, 2010.)

The checkered shirt has one yellow sleeve and one blue one, a red front, a purple back, and green cuffs. Hatoyama wore a black turtleneck underneath. The outfit prompted a prominent fashion critic to wonder in print whether there was "anyone able to stop him wearing such a thing." (In this country, that shirt alone would have been grounds for impeachment.) "His ideas and philosophy are old," the critic wrote in a national magazine. "Japan is facing a crisis, and we can't overcome it with a prime minister like this."
(ibid.)

Harsh criticism of it in Japan ranged from "Is anyone able to stop him from wearing such a thing?" to "Walmart wouldn't even take it."
(Tian Wei. A Tale of Bad Fashion Choices and US Influence. Global Times. June 6, 2010.)

The latest figures add to Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama's growing list of troubles, coming a day after the Japanese leader publicly apologized for two former aides charged with falsifying campaign finance reports.

Hatoyama's popularity has dropped sharply just 100 days into his tenure as the nation questions his economic policies, even after unveiling a new 7.2 trillion yen ($78.7 billion) stimulus package earlier this month.
(Unemployment up, prices down in Japan. USA Today. December 25, 2010.)

鳩山政権を振り返る ― make fool of oneself

Yukio Hatoyama has finally spoken out about the recent events that ended in his resignation, days after the inauguration of his successor as prime minister, Naoto Kan.

But he chose not to speak on TV, or to a magazine or to a newspaper. Instead, he chose Twitter. Who was he Tweeting to? To the nation and to his ‘followers’ (although not just followers in the conventional Twitter sense).

And what did he say after his brief but total silence since stepping down earlier this month? Roughly translated, he said:

‘Now the “new public” appears to have a life of its own. I thank all those who allowed me to do the naked dance. I also would like to thank all those who followed after my naked dance. This amazing power of propagation will definitely change our world.’

Naked dance, or hadaka odori, means making a fool of oneself in public. So what did he mean by saying that here? Many of his Twitter followers were puzzled, and asked him what exactly he meant by ‘naked dance’.

The following day Hatoyama Tweeted again, this time with a link to a YouTube video presented by young music industry entrepreneur Derek Sivers who outlines how one ‘lone nut’ can start a movement with a single follower. Hatoyama accompanied the link with the words:

‘This video is the answer to the mystery of the “naked dance”. This is the idea of the “new public” where the entire nation takes responsibility in leading public affairs. With this in mind, I'd like to continue dancing like the young guy in this video.’
(Hatoyama's Naked Dance. The Diplomat. June 20, 2010.)

alight

The man at the center of the celebrity sex tape scandal, Peterpan vocalist Nazriel “Ariel” Irham, arrived at National Police headquarters for questioning on Friday.

Ariel arrived at 10:20 a.m, evading journalists by running into the Criminal Division as soon as he alighted from his car.
(Ariel Arrives for Body Inspection by National Police. Jakarta Globe. June 18, 2010.)

In a grocery on the Standing Rock Reservation, the store personnel invited me back for their Christmas party and steak dinner. I rolled into a small town on the edge of the Custer National Forest as the wind shot tumbleweeds across my path and the leaden sky began to spit snow. I had brought no winter coat. As I parked against the boardwalk and alighted from the car, an ancient man sporting Oshkosh B'Gosh overalls and a De Kalb cap shook my hand, bought me a cup of coffee and told me (at my urging) of early life on the prairie.
(USA Today. 1993.)

Australian lawmakers Thursday approved a paid parental leave scheme, in a move business groups and labor unions say brings the country in line with most other developed nations.

Under the taxpayer-funded scheme, eligible stay-at-home parents will receive 18 weeks' paid leave following the birth of a child from January 1, 2011.
(Australia Approves Paid Parental Leave Scheme. Dow Jones Newswires. June 16, 2010.)

"Australia has been one of only two countries in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development not to provide for parental leave and it is a league table from which we have now thankfully removed ourselves," Australian Industry Group Chief Executive Heather Ridout said.
(ibid.)

Consumers who make a late payment or violate other terms of their credit card agreements will get a break under new Federal Reserve Board rules announced Tuesday.

The Fed approved rules that will cap most late-payment fees at $25. The rule also bars lenders from charging a fee that exceeds the amount of the violation. For example, if a card holder is late making a $20 payment, the penalty fee can't exceed $20.

Currently, many issuers charge up to $39 in late fees, so capping the fee at $25 will save many consumers money, says Josh Frank, senior researcher for the Center for Responsible Lending. He notes, though, that the rule lets issuers charge higher fees if customers make more than one late payment.

The rules, which take effect Aug. 22, implement provisions of the Credit Card Accountability Responsibility and Disclosure Act, which was enacted last year.
(Sandra Block. Fed rules to cap late fees on credit cards, ban inactivity fees. USA Today. June 15, 2010.)

A blaze of glory

The Japanese chalk up two successes in space

THE week before last, a falcon was launched into space: Elon Musk’s privately financed Falcon 9 heavy-lifting rocket. This week a different falcon returned from the void. On June 13th Hayabusa, as the bird is known in Japanese, streaked through the night sky of southern Australia to deliver to Earth what researchers hope will be the first sample of rock collected from the surface of an asteroid.
(The Economist. June 15, 2010.)

Sumo stablemaster Kise, recently demoted for providing gangsters with tickets to a tournament, admitted to the Japan Sumo Association last month that he once had ties to gang members, according to informed sources in the sport.
(The Daily Yomiuri. June 14, 2010.)

TOKYO — Two sumo coaches who provided ringside seats to members of a notorious crime syndicate have been punished by the Japan Sumo Association.
(The Associated Press. May 27, 2010.)

New York Times誌(blog)に至っても、

More signs of corruption in sumo wrestling: two sumo coaches, Higonoumi and Dairyugawa, are accused (and have been punished by the Japan Sumo Association) of providing ringside seats to mobsters.
(Mobsters at a Sumo Match. The New York Times. June 2, 2010.)

pending

ABC presenter Andy Muirhead, host of the Collectors program, has been charged with child pornography, the broadcaster has revealed.

The AFP said computer equipment was seized from the 34-year-old's home in Hobart during a search on Tuesday.

An ABC spokeswoman said the corporation was notified by Muirhead's management late yesterday that he had been charged with a serious offence.

"Mr Muirhead will not present the Collectors on ABC TV or the breakfast program on ABC Local Radio in Tasmania pending the outcome of the legal proceedings," she said.
(Tim Clarke. ABC host faces child pornography charge. Sydney Morning Herald. June 11, 2010.)

American Heritage Dictionaryによると、

prep. 1. While in the process of; during. 2. While awaiting; until.

barukh habba(主の御名によって入る者は幸いである)

Google today attacked Apple's apparent decision to ban some third-party ad networks from collecting ad performance data on the iPhone and iPad.

The latest brouhaha between the two rivals stems from new language in the terms iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad developers must agree to.

Ad analytics collection is prohibited unless it is "provided to an independent advertising service provider whose primary business is serving mobile ads," Apple's revised terms read. "For example, an advertising service provider owned by or affiliated with a developer or distributor of mobile devices, mobile operating systems or development environments other than Apple would not qualify as independent."

That seems to bar mobile ad company AdMob, the company Google acquired in late May for a reported $750 million, from Apple's devices.

Fourteen young detainees overcame their guard and fled a boot camp regime of physical training and psychological treatment designed to cure their addiction — to the internet.

The group, aged 15 to 22, staged their mass breakout by grabbing a duty supervisor when he was in bed and immobilising him in his quilt.

He shouted for help and they apologised before tying him up. They then made their way in groups of three to the home town of the leader of the group.

The addicts made their break from the Huai’an Internet Addiction Treatment Centre in eastern Jiangsu province last Wednesday, complaining that they could no longer endure its “monotonous work and intensive training”.

It is the latest incident to highlight the sometimes brutal techniques employed at camps across China to wean young people off the internet. A 15-year-old boy was beaten to death last year days after he was admitted to a camp. Last month a court sentenced two instructors to up to ten years in jail for the incident.

The China Youth Association for Network Development estimates that about 24 million Chinese adolescents are addicted to the internet, many to gaming sites.
(Chinese internet addicts stage mutiny at boot camp. Times Online. June 8, 2010.)

Naoto Kan: Just Call Us The Irregulars

On his first official day on the job as prime minister, Naoto Kan said he’d like his new government to be known as the “Irregular Militia Cabinet”.

More precisely, he said his newly appointed team of ministers should show the spirit of the Kiheitai, a historical militia rooted in the history of his home prefecture, Yamaguchi in western Japan. The Kiheitai played a key role during the Meiji Restoration era in the late 19th Century, when Japan opened its doors to the world and began to create a modern political structure, economy and military.
(The Wall Street Journal. June 8, 2010.)

Mr. Kan might want to keep in mind, though, that Kiheitai leader Takasugi died of illness at the tender age of 27 in 1867, and his militia disbanded in 1868, before seeing the advent of modern Japan.

tie a tourniquet

A 41-year-old man is recovering in hospital after being attacked by a white pointer shark near Walpole, on Western Australia's South Coast.

Michael Bedford was treated for deep wounds to his right knee and shock after the attack which happened at Conspicuous Cliffs 15 kilometres east of Walpole yesterday afternoon.

Mr Bedford was rescued by a fellow surfer and a group of local fishermen who were able to tie a tourniquet around his leg before the ambulance arrived.

To a man with a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

Steven P. Jobs predicted earlier this week that the personal computer was going to go the way of the farm truck: It won’t disappear but it will be relegated to a niche role by popular mobile devices like smartphones and tablets.

On Thursday, Microsoft’s chief executive, Steven A. Ballmer, whose company’s success still rides on the success of the personal computer, answered by saying, in essence, that pretty much every computing device is a PC.

“I think people are going to be using PCs in greater and greater numbers for years to come,” Mr. Ballmer said...

“The PC as we know it will continue to morph,” he said. “The real question is what are you going to push.” In Microsoft’s case, the answer is more machines that run flavors of Windows. “To a man with a hammer everything looks like a nail; we have a hammer,” Mr. Ballmer joked.
(Miguel Helft. Ballmer: The PC Will Continue to Thrive. The New York Times. June 3, 2010.)

stave off

1. A narrow strip of wood forming part of the sides of a barrel, tub, or similar structure

PARIS — Too many burgers slathered with rich sauces and toppings not only clog arteries but may boost the risk of asthma and wheezing too, especially in kids, according to a study released Thursday.

Conversely, a so-called Mediterranean diet -- heavy on fruit, veggies and fish, while light on fat -- can help stave off asthma-related respiratory problems, said the study, published in the British Medical Journal.

Asthma is the most common chronic disease in children. Often triggered by dust and allergies, it inflames the airways that brings air in and out of the lungs.

Symptoms include wheezing, chest pains and constricted breathing. Worldwide, the disease afflicts some 300 million people and kills about 250,000 each year, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).

― revolving door

FACTBOX - Japan's 'revolving door' prime ministers

The ruling Democratic Party will choose a new leader on Friday, but analysts say a change at the top may fail to impress voters fed up with prime ministers leaving office one after another.

ALTERNATIVE BROWSER Chrome keeps track of users' habits even when in "anonymous" browsing mode.

Developed by Google using the Webkit rendering engine, Chrome has been steadily gaining browser market share as Microsoft's security liability, Internet Explorer, has seen its popularity wane.

Chrome's "incognito" mode tries to offer those who take part in after hours browsing some sense of privacy. Most mistake the mode as a form of anonymiser, but in reality all it does is not track the users' browsing habits and decline to accept cookies from websites, supposedly not leaving a trace of what websites the user viewed on the computer.

While incognito mode does seem to work as expected on the surface, digging a little deeper, we found that Chrome does in fact remember sites that were visited.
