最も無難な方法 ― the line of least resistance

Women spend more than an hour getting ready for work on a Monday, but by the time Friday rolls around this figure has dropped by three quarters to just 19 minutes, a new survey shows.

The study, involving 1,000 people, discovered that women spend an average of 76 minutes on their appearance on a Monday.

This breaks down into 23 minutes spent on hair, 18 minutes on make-up, 16 minutes deciding what to wear and 19 minutes showering.

On Tuesday, the average women spend 12 minutes on her hair, nine on make-up, nine minutes choosing an outfit and 10 minutes showering.

By Friday, time has become even more concentrated with six minutes on hair, a minute on make-up, a minute spent choosing clothes and 11 minutes showering.

“It’s clear that most men can only pay attention to their appearance for a maximum of two days before opting for an acceptable level of dishevelment,” he said.

“Women try to keep their dress standards higher for longer, but by the time Friday comes, they too have gone down a line of least resistance.”

A Ferndale woman is suing United Airlines after she fell asleep and was left alone locked in a jet on the tarmac for four hours.

Ginger McGuire, 36, is suing for false imprisonment, infliction of emotional distress and negligence, her attorney, Geoffrey Fieger said this morning.

The flight from Dulles International Airport in Washington arrived at Philadelphia International Airport shortly before 12:30 a.m., according to Fieger. A cleaning crew discovered a dozing McGuire, locked her back in and then brought in federal officers concerned about terrorists to question her.

like fire"は、

like a house on fire(木造の家で火が燃え広がるように)
like a bush fire(茂みの火が燃え広がるように)
like a grass fire(草原の火が燃え広がるように)

JAKARTA, Indonesia - A video of smoking toddler is sparking outrage on the web. When the clip of 2-year-old Sumatran Ardi Rizal puffing away surfaced on YouTube Wednesday, it spread to online social media like, well, fire. Popular blog Gawker linked to the smoking baby video, calling him "totally cooler than you." But user Faldo777's response was the more typical response: "His parents should be jailed ..."

sell like hotcakes

The hottest new tech gadget, Apple’s iPad, is tough to get in Southwest Florida and across the nation, as well.

Neither the Apple Store at Coconut Point Mall in Estero nor the Best Buy at Page Field Commons has any to sell. The Best Buy in Naples has a handful, but they are Wi-Fi only. Neither has the popular and more expensive 3G model.

Nationwide, analysts at the Wall Street investment firm Piper Jaffray randomly surveyed 50 Apple stores and found all sold out of 3Gs and just 13 had Wi-Fi-only models in stock.

To say the iPad has been selling like hotcakes is an understatement. In the first month iPad sales were more than 1 million, and that was before the 3G went on sale. Now, about 200,000 a week are being gobbled up.

The Pac-Man game Google put on its home page gobbled up almost five million hours of work time, suggests a study.

The playable version of the classic video game was put on Google's front page on 21 May to celebrate 30 years since the launch of Pac-Man in Japan.

The search giant reworked the game so the layout was arranged around letters forming its name.

The statistics on how many people played and for how long were gathered by software firm Rescue Time. It makes time-tracking software that keeps an eye on what workers do and where they go online.

On a typical day, it suggests, most people conduct about 22 searches on the Google page, each one lasting about 11 seconds.

Putting Pac-Man on the page boosted that time by an average of about 36 seconds, the firm said based on the browsing habits of 11,000 Rescue Time users.

The firm believes this is a relatively low figure because only a minority realised that the logo was playable. To play, people had to click on the "insert coin" button which replaced the more familiar "I'm Feeling Lucky" button on 21 and 22 May.

Extrapolating this up across the 504 million unique users who visit the main Google page day-to-day, this represents an increase of 4.8 million hours - equal to about 549 years.

In dollar terms, assuming people are paid $25 (£17.50) an hour, this equates to about $120m in lost productivity, the firm said.
(Google Pac-Man eats up work time. BBC News. May 25, 2010.)

fit the bill

Sydney Morning Herald

A study ranking Australia's teacher development and evaluation practices among the worst in the world comes as no surprise to the nation's parents.

A new report from the Grattan Institute, What Teachers Want: Better Teacher Management, places Australia 19th out of 23 countries in teacher evaluation and development.

It also says the vast majority of Australian public school teachers agreed poor-performing colleagues were not dealt with adequately by their schools and they would not be sacked for bad results.

Dianne Giblin, president of the Federation of Parents and Citizens Associations of NSW, says even when problem teachers are identified there is no ready solution.

"What we do have in place currently are systems that make it quite difficult to monitor and support teachers that are not quite fitting the bill," she told AAP.
(Australia 'fails in teacher evaluation.' Sydney Morning Herald. May 24, 2010.)

"fit the bill"のかわりに、"fill the bill"と表現することもあるそうです。

"earn points"

Instead of cash, some cards let you earn points toward travel or merchandise. Consider getting a card like this only if you're a frequent customer of a certain airline or hotel chain and can rack up points quickly to trade in for airline tickets or hotel packages.
(Megan Johnston. It's payback time. Money. 2003.)

loyalty card
reward card

In addition to purchases from Dnata, cardholders will also earn reward points on all other retail purchases. International retail purchases will earn 3 per cent in reward points, while domestic retail purchases will attract 1.5 per cent. Rewards are earned in the form of Dnata Points that are redeemable across the wide network of Dnata Travel outlets, with each Dnata Point equal to one Dirham.

When we adopted Lily the beagle from a rescue group, my husband and I were living the blissful life of DINKs – Double Income, No Kids. It was a sweet set-up: We travelled, went to fancy restaurants, slept late on weekends and kept fragile vases on low shelves.
(Rebecca Dube. My dog taught me how to be a mom. The Globe and Mail. May 19, 2010.)

puncture

- ticker

caption
subtitle

Several leading venues on the Internet, including cnet and Time Warner's Pathfinder, now use Java applets with links to the wire services to display live news tickers running across the screen. But Java is more than a way to spice up the pages of the World Wide Web. The news tickers and dancing cartoons are just the most visible signs of a deeper, more profound change. Although today Java matters only to programmers, it could in the next few years shift the balance of power in the entire computer industry, changing not only the cost and shape of the machines on our desktops but also our very concept of what a computer should be.

A growing source of profit for card companies could take a hit from a Senate proposal that would give the Federal Reserve authority over the fees charged to merchants on debit-card transactions and give merchants more authority to bargain.

The Senate on Thursday passed in a bipartisan vote two amendments to the financial reform bill that sent shares of the credit-card issuers lower Friday. The proposal could give merchants and shop owners the authority to impose minimum purchase amounts and would give the Fed authority to regulate the fees charged per swipe. Those rules could drive consumers away from using their debit cards on smaller purchases, an area that had been rapidly growing and can be very profitable for the likes of Visa Inc. (V) and MasterCard Inc. (MA).

Visa shares dropped 8.8% to $78.23 as the company has the largest share of U.S. debit-card purchases, while MasterCard fell 7.7% to $214.50. Meanwhile, other debit-card operators also declined, as Capital One Financial Corp. (COF) fell 5.6% to $42.41 and Discover Financial Services (DFS) fell 2.2% to $14.46.

China rocked as man kills seven children, teacher

A MAN hacked seven children and their teacher to death with a meat cleaver yesterday, in China's latest bloody schoolyard rampage. It was the eighth brutal attack on children in 10 weeks.

Yesterday, Wu Huanmin, 48, massacred five boys, two girls and their kindergarten teacher, and wounded 20 others, before returning to his Shaanxi province home and killing himself, according to Xinhua.

''There was blood everywhere,'' a local man named Zheng Xiulan said after witnessing the kindergarten scene. ''I don't know why he did it … I hadn't heard that he was mentally ill. He wasn't poor either.''

...your ability to see details clearly play a vital role in driving and many other occupations where good and efficient visual functioning of the individual is essential. People’s lives are entrusted into the hands of drivers when passengers are onboard a vehicle and without good vision, the driver is in danger of causing a tragic accident. The ability of a driver to see the features of objects he or she looks at, such as colour, shape, size, details, depth, and contrast if deficient or below the expected standard reduce safety and increase the risk of crashes. A driver’s visual acuity must at least be such that s/he has time to detect and to react to obstacles, pedestrians, other vehicles and signs while moving at the maximum posted speed in daylight and in the night. Greater levels of visual acuity are required for some classes of vehicles to ensure public safety on today’s congested and high-speed roads. Road signage should be designed to be easily legible at a safe distance for all drivers who meet the minimum visual acuity standard.

A Connecticut woman who was mauled and blinded by a chimpanzee last year arrived at a Boston hospital yesterday morning to be evaluated for possible face and hand transplants.

SHANGHAI — For English speakers with subpar Chinese skills, daily life in China offers a confounding array of choices. At banks, there are machines for “cash withdrawing” and “cash recycling.” The menus of local restaurants might present such delectables as “fried enema,” “monolithic tree mushroom stem squid” and a mysterious thirst-quencher known as “The Jew’s Ear Juice.”

INTERNET SEARCH LEADER Google has blogged about the changes to its search pages, explaining that the alterations reflect 'rising expectations' for search on the world wide web.

Google has tweaked its results pages, making what amounts to not much more than some design alterations. However, according to a blog post from the firm, there is much more to it than that.

The man accused of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction in Times Square carried out a dry run days before the failed attack, it has been claimed.

Faisal Shahzad, who is in custody in New York on terrorism and weapons charges, drove from his home in Connecticut to the theatre district on April 28 in the vehicle that days later he would pack with explosives, a law enforcement official told the Associated Press.

Mr Shahzad then returned on April 30 - the day before the attack - to drop off a black Isuzu get-away vehicle near to the target site.

But despite these preparations his escape from the scene on May 1 was hampered when Mr Shahzad discovered he had left the keys for the getaway vehicle inside the explosive laden car, the official said.
(Joanna Sugden. Faisal Shahzad ‘carried out dry run’ before Times Square attack. Times Online. May 6, 2010.)

DUBAI - An American citizen accused of trying to detonate a bomb in New York's Times Square was heading for Pakistan when he was pulled off a Dubai-bound flight shortly after it left the stand at JFK, the airline said Wednesday.

Asked what Faisal Shahzad's final destination had been, an Emirates airline spokesman said: "It was Islamabad."

Prosecutors charged Shahzad, 30, a naturalized U.S. citizen born in Pakistan, with five counts, including attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and trying to kill and maim people within the United States. He faces a life sentence if convicted.

Abusive and disrespectful practices in the funeral industry will continue if the NSW government moves to deregulate the industry, Greens health spokeswoman Lee Rhiannon has warned.

Ms Rhiannon said the health department bears much of the responsibility for the abuses, which include a bloodied body being washed in a public car wash bay at Coffs Harbour on the NSW mid-north coast, and the disposal of body parts in council bins.

"People grieving for their loved ones should not be exposed to shonky operators who flourish in a deregulated market."
(Stop shonky funeral operators: Greens. Sydney Morning Herald. May 2, 2010.)

shonkie

No ifs, ands or butts: Michigan braces for smoking ban to kick in at 6 a.m. Saturday

no ifs, ands, or buts

LANSING, Mich. — Ready or not, most Michigan workplaces and public buildings — including bars and restaurants — go smoke-free Saturday.

Some smokers, businesses and private clubs aren’t happy about the ban that officially kicks in at 6 a.m. The state’s response: Most folks support the ban, and it’s time for dissenters to get with the program.

More than four months have passed since Gov. Jennifer Granholm signed legislation to make Michigan the 38th state to enact some sort of smoke-free law. Businesses and local health departments that will be expected to help enforce the ban have had some time to clear up any lingering confusion over the requirements.
