I used to believe...

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for Richard Sands.

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands.

rote

rote exercise
rote learning

Initially, many in-coming students do not realize that mathematics is based on reasoning and problem-solving. Such students arrive believing that mathematics consists of memorizing arbitrary rules. Mathematics is a discipline which relies on critical thinking skills and not rote memorization.

NHL nixes Balsillie application to buy Phoenix Coyotes

CHICAGO (Reuters) - The National Hockey League on Wednesday rejected Canadian billionaire Jim Balsillie's application for ownership of the Phoenix Coyotes hockey team but gave its approval to two groups vying to buy the bankrupt club.

The North American sports league said owners unanimously approved the application of sports tycoon Jerry Reinsdorf and ruled incomplete the filing by a group of investors under the name Ice Edge Holdings. But the league said Ice Edge could continue its efforts to buy the team.

The NHL, which does not want Basillie moving the Coyotes to Canada, said in a terse statement said owners voted unanimously not to approve the application from the co-CEO of BlackBerry maker Research in Motion Ltd.

nothing
no
naught

fan out

In a card trick the magician fans out the cards and says, "Pick one."
(Atlantic. 1990.)

He kept watching her. She was back in the water, breaststroking in circles. The wind rippled across the water. She looked so white, frog-kicking, her black-looking hair fanning out, obscuring her shoulders. She surface-dove, emerged closer to shore, and said something to Andrew.
(Pam Lewis. Perfect Family.)

To hunt down militants and improve security for upcoming national elections, U.S. forces are fanning out across Uruzgan and other Taliban-infested provinces in southern Afghanistan.
(Houston Chronicle. 2004.)

nudge

Canon profit tumbles, nudges forecast higher

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's Canon Inc posted a 72 percent fall in quarterly profit, hit by sluggish demand for office copiers, but nudged its full-year forecast higher on a firmer than expected yen and more aggressive cost cuts.

Canon has benefited from solid demand for high-end cameras, helping cushion the blow from weak sales of copiers and printers as companies worldwide rein in spending on office machines in a tough economic environment.
(The Washington Post. July 28, 2009.)

Canon Q2 profit tumbles, lifts forecast slightly
TOKYO, July 28 (Reuters) - Japanese camera and office equipment maker Canon Inc (7751.T) posted a 72 percent fall in quarterly profit, hit by slow copier demand, but it raised its full-year forecast by 6 percent.

Operating profit at Canon, the world's largest digital camera maker ahead of Sony Corp (6758.T) and Nikon Corp (7731.T), came in at 44.9 billion yen ($473 million) in April-June, down from 160.15 billion yen a year earlier. Canon gained from solid demand for high-end cameras, but its copiers and printers business suffered sluggish sales as companies rein in spending on office machines in a tough economic environment.

inundate

undulate(波状の、ウェーブ状の)

Our office in Alexandria was inundated with telephone calls and letters wanting to know if we had any more videos similar... (Saturday Evening Post)

Like the handful of people who've spoken publicly about Darby, Ewing has been inundated with media requests for comment... (Washington Post)

Daily we are inundated with letters condemning Republicans for the current debacle going on in Washington. (San Francisco Chronicle)

He points out that he was inundated by calls from government officials and media and that he gave interviews to five television... (Washington Post)

gory

gory details
gory films
gory scenes
gory horrors
gory stories
gory murder

Stephanie Smith, a clinical psychologist and the Colorado public education coordinator for the American Psychological Association, says Americans overwhelmed by the financial crisis should focus on what they can control. "We can control how much we are spending on eating out," she says, "or getting our latte or getting our new fall clothes." Taking a break from reading or watching all the bleak financial news can be beneficial, too. "We don't need to know the gory details" because this can increase anxiety, Dr. Smith says. Families should consider a five-minute rule for discussing the banking crisis and then move on to less anxiety-inducing topics, she says. Many investors are dealing with the turmoil by monitoring their investments much more intensely.

jettison

jettison

See Usage Note at flotsam"とあります。"

Usage Note

She recalled a charter flight for Congressional members returning from the Democratic Party's mid-term convention in Kansas City in 1975. The plane was "a rickety thing," she said, and soon after takeoff the warning lights malfunctioned and the pilots could not tell if the landing gear was working. "Eventually they jettisoned the fuel and prepared to crash land," she said. "They put foam all over the runway and every ambulance and fire fighter truck from Kansas City was there. The entire airfield was a blur of flashing lights." The plane landed safely.

another shoe has dropped...

By now you've probably seen the NY Times's long piece on distracted driving — about how most drivers and most legislators willfully ignore the evidence of the dangers of talking on a cellphone, texting, and other electronic distractions while behind the wheel. According to this article, cellphone use while driving causes over 1,000 fatalities a year in the US. Another shoe has now dropped: it seems that the US National Highway Safety Administration blocked a proposed definitive study of the risks. The NHSA now cites concerns about angering Congress. Two consumer safety groups had filed a FOIA request for documents about the aborted study, and the Times has now made the documents public — including the research behind the request for a study of 10,000 drivers.

sheet

The Australian

Mr Aso dissolved the House of Representatives today, in preparation for a campaign beginning officially on August 18 but in reality now well under way, with the opposition Democratic Party of Japan building a huge lead in opinion polls.

After a succession of bad losses in recent regional and city elections, most polls now show the DPJ heading the LDP by 2-1 margins and similar distances between new opposition leader Yukio Hatoyama and Mr Aso.

Mr Aso, 68, who has led the LDP and the government since last September, is currently being sheeted with most of the blame from within his party for the acute deterioration.
(Aso risks Liberal Democratic Party ruin at August 30 poll. The Australian. July 21, 2009.)

charge off

A strong leader makes decisions. Whether they are right or wrong, they get made, and they are clear. A weak executive dilly-dallies and gives false signals, leaving subordinates to charge off in different directions.

~down in, up, etc.
rush in the specified direction: The children charged down the stairs.

click

A brief, sharp, nonresonant sound

the click of a door latch

(AHD: To become clear; fall into place)

"If you can't come up with new ideas, you don't belong here, " says senior Paul Kirley, who in five years has designed bathroom scales, lamps, helmets, and toilets. " They can't teach creativity, but they can help you harness it and shape your ideas on a professional level." Some ideas click right away, he says, " like the guy who said it would be cool to have a motorcycle in water and invented Jet skis. "
(Student Creators Tackle Poor Design. Christian Science Monitor. 1991.)

Gruden knew that Gannon, being wooed by other teams, had concerns about the Raiders. So he played to Gannon's no-nonsense style. "We went to dinner at some Mexican joint, and, on the way, back, we stopped at a 7-Eleven, and he bought a six-pack of beer, and we came back to the facility and sat in his office for three hours and watched film," Gannon says. "I knew right then." "I felt we clicked right away," Gruden says. "I had never been around a guy that passionate about playing. " The two were in Gruden's office until 1 a.m. Gruden showed Gannon tapes of Raiders games and practices to prove the team was headed in the right direction. But Gannon, who turns 35 next week, was in search of much more.

screw

Google and Microsoft: who is screwing who?

So Google wants to be a player in the operating system market and Microsoft wants to be a search player? Meh.

Now that the dust is settling a little after the initial media feeding frenzy that followed the announcement by Google that it was entering the operating system business, I have been asking myself just how scared Microsoft really should be.
(iTwire. July 15, 2009.)

To suggest that Google will screw Microsoft into the ground in a years time with the Chrome OS for netbooks is, frankly, like suggesting that Microsoft will do the same to Google with its Bing search engine.

I'm no Microsoft apologist believe me, but I suspect it will be smoking a cigarette and feeling satisfied on the search front long before Google has even managed to get to first base with Microsoft in terms of OS share.
(ibid.)

heads-up

American Heritage Dictionary

The JFK airport team, which screens at least 13 overseas flights every day, also keeps on hand a pile of quarantine orders. If it encounters a possible SARS patient, every passenger on the flight must fill out the questionnaire providing contact information, itinerary and seat number on the plane. Similar activities are taking place at two dozen other airports across the United States, including Dulles International Airport. Ideally, health inspectors get a heads-up call about sick travelers while a plane is still in the air, said Margaret Becker, chief inspector at JFK airport.

monger

A dealer in special commodity. Often used in combination."

costermonger
fashionmonger
fishmonger
gossipmonger
ironmonger
newsmonger
phrasemonger
rumormonger
scandalmonger
scaremonger
warmonger
whoremonger

As if It Needed to, Virginia Bans Smiles at the DMV

As part of the DMV's effort to develop super-secure driver's licenses and foolproof identification cards, the agency has issued a smile ban, directing customers to adopt a "neutral expression" in their portraits, thereby extinguishing whatever happiness comes with finally hearing one's number called.

The driver's license photo, it seems, is destined to look like a mug shot.
(Washington Post. May 28, 2009.)

rabble

The lowest or coarsest class of people"という定義も見られます。”

An iron bar with one end bent like a rake, used to stir and skim molten iron in puddling”、などと定義されています。

Professional demonstrators and rabble rousers will attend along with ordinary citizens of all ages. The professionals will make a point of trying to antagonize the police into radical action. This guarantees them a spot on the national news.

subpoena

Michael Jackson's health records are subpoenaed

Investigators trying to determine how Michael Jackson died are faced with the daunting task of creating an accurate medical biography for a superstar whose ailments, surgeries and doctors have been tabloid fodder for three decades.

Jackson has seen more than a dozen doctors since 1993, according to various public records and accounts, and investigators are now collecting as much medical data about him as possible.

Sources told The Times on Thursday that the Los Angeles County coroner's office has requested and subpoenaed medical files and records from a number of doctors who treated the singer.
(Los Angels Times. July 10, 2009.)

red herring

His thesis: politicians who trumpet old-fashioned economic nationalism or mercantilism are out of date. In Congress, for example, there are mounting calls for protection when American auto companies like General Motors, or computer companies like IBM, lose out to the Japanese. " This is an absolute red herring, " he argues. Reich says the all-important issue for the 21st Century - the heart of the whole problem - is increasing the skills and educational levels of American workers. If the American people possess the talents, then the ownership of factories and companies is secondary, he says.

slap

FDA Slaps Strong Warning on Darvon, Darvocet

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has called for a boxed warning of overdose risk on packages of Darvon, Darvocet and other painkillers containing the drug propoxyphene -- but it will not order their withdrawal from the market.

The agency ordered manufacturers to study higher-than-expected fatality rates in propoxyphene overdoses compared with other painkillers -- and possible toxic effects on the heart in when consumers exceed recommended doses.

privation

Research shows that most children who haven't learned to read properly by third grade, usually age 9, are likely to be poor readers their whole lives. With that failure often comes a lifetime of disappointment and privation - and burdens for society. # National Institutes of Health researchers now consider reading problems a major public health threat.

argy-bargy

Despite the ongoing poor data, Mr Rudd is confident programs like the intervention and the $642 million housing program for Indigenous communities will eventually see statistical improvements.

"We're committed to this because everything we've tried in the past hasn't worked," Mr Rudd said.

"Let's be very practical about it. We're on this bus because we think it's the right way to go, and there's always going to be a whole lot of argy-bargy round the side of it.

"That's life, but I'm supporting the Chief Minister in his efforts and what Premier [Anna] Bligh is doing in a different context in Cape York, what Premier [Colin] Barnett is doing in the Kimberley.

lion's share

最大の分け前、一番のうまいところ(the greatest or best part; American Heritage Dictionary of English Language)、現代ビジネスでは、最大のシェアといった意味にもなります。

Google News

Jackson children to receive lion's share of wealth

Michael Jackson's mother and children are set to get the lion's share of his estate from the family trust he established, a report claims. Celebrity gossip website tmz.com - which broke the news of Jackson's death last week - says Katherine Jackson and the King of Pop's three children will each get 40 per cent of his estimated $618 million fortune. Several children's charities, which have not been designated and are not specified in the trust, are in line for the remaining $120 million.

Salaries and allowances of top government officials, including cabinet ministers will take the lion’s share of the government’s expenditure in 2009/2010.
(Top State officials take lion’s share in salaries, allowances. Business Daily. July 3, 2009.)

barrage

NORTH Korea is highly likely to test-fire a barrage of missiles within the next few days – a move that would aggravate diplomatic tension. The North is expected to launch short or medium-range missiles, including banned ballistic rockets, the South Korean newspaper JoongAng Ilbo has reported.
(Edinburgh Evening News. July 2, 2009.)

When Gene Orza spoke at the Red Sox's spring training site, he was barraged with questions about how the union could have failed to destroy the names from the 2003 anonymous steroid tests. Now Alex Rodriguez and Sammy Sosa have been outed, even though no one in baseball has been more protective of players' rights than Orza.

stymie
