flight away

Only a flight away? Swine flu followed route map

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Health experts are fond of saying any new disease is just a flight away from anywhere, and a report published on Monday shows the new strain of H1N1 flu followed the airline route map as it spread around the globe.

The swine flu virus spread first and quickest in March and April in the United States and Canada -- where 80 percent of airline passengers traveled in March and April of 2008, researchers at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto found.

He lives in three miles away from the train station.

とか

The museum is ten minutes away by bus.

"i before e except after c”

being
foreign
homogeneity

Generations of children have learnt how to spell by chanting “i before e except after c”, but new guidance from the Government says that schools should stop teaching the rule because it is irrelevant and confusing.

cause célèbre

During a 1982 murder trial in Philadelphia, a city that's more than one-third black, the court settled on a jury of 10 whites and two blacks only after prosecutors eliminated 10 qualified black candidates from the jury pool. It took that jury just four hours to hand down a first-degree murder conviction to a young black man accused of killing a white police officer. Little did anyone know that by sentencing radical black journalist Mumia Abu-Jamal to death they were sparking a movement against the death penalty that would eventually make Abu-Jamal an international cause celebre. He has written two books and countless articles for newspapers and journals, starred in an HBO special, produced his own compact disc and CD-ROM, and is the focus of a march scheduled for April 24 through downtown Philadelphia called " Millions for Mumia. rake up

" I'd still like to know why she told you about the letters. " Julian said, because he was curious to see how Craddock would react, " I think she wanted to stop me asking questions about what happened between you and her twenty years ago. " " You poke your nose into everything, don't you? What happened between me and Lady Tarleton is none of your business! " " I agree there's no reason to rake up that matter again, " said Sir Robert. " It was thoroughly enquired into at the time? " Craddock laughed shortly. " I gave you a fair hearing, " Sir Robert insisted, and you had nothing to say in your own defence. "

beef

Al Qaida is intent on using the internet to launch a cyber-warfare campaign against the UK, ministers have revealed. Terrorist groups, which already use the internet for recruitment, propaganda and communication purposes, want to turn it into a dangerous weapon.
Security Minister Lord West issued the warning as he published the Government's new Cyber Security Strategy aimed at heading off online threats. As well as potential cyber-attacks from terrorists, the UK faces a real and growing threat from foreign governments such as China and Russia, and from organised criminal gangs, he said. Targets include key businesses, the national power grid, financial markets and Whitehall departments. As part of attempts to beef up defences, a new Office for Cyber Security will be set up to co-ordinate Government policy.

fiasco

If you are in financial difficulty, discuss your situation with your lender. As a result of the subprime mortgage fiasco, many banks are willing to work with you so that you can keep your house. Additionally, many local and state governments have assistance programs, and your lender should be able to identify these for you.
(Washington Post. 2008.)

brainstorm

When I entered the work world, I saw that the laxity of the East would not do at all in Chicago, and I cast about for a barber. I found a fellow who kept my hair thinned-out looking and acceptable, if somewhat nondescript. He cut my hair for several years, once every three weeks or so, and in the above-mentioned nonstyle. One day, he asked if he could " try something new. " He had just had a brainstorm, and would I experiment along with him? Well, I submitted and was treated to the surprise of a new appearance. The barber had cut my hair and then slicked it back, with a vast amount of some super-strength preparation. Slicked it back, so that it flowed from my hairline to the back of my neck in one ironed-looking progression.

the elements

behind the wheel

be behind the wheel
get behind the wheel
sit behind the wheel
climb behind the wheel

などです。

drunk behind the wheel

Clyde Harvey Pyles of Gordon County was sentenced to six years in prison for driving drunk in December 1990 - his 16th offense at the time - but the board paroled him in June after six months. impunity

To ranchers who live in the area and occasionally have witnessed them, such operations resemble military exercises. But these are not soldiers on maneuvers. They are gangs of Mexican drug traffickers who have become increasingly brazen as they push tons of marijuana, cocaine, heroin and amphetamines across the Rio Grande into the United States with virtual impunity. According to residents and law enforcement officials, southwestern Texas these days is a frontier under siege.

shank's pony [mare]

crib sheet

"things used as an aid to understanding, eg an exact translation of a foreign text one is studying."

In the exam, I cribbed (an answer) from the girl next to me.

Elders regard life choices with regret or satisfaction based largely on whether they were " true " to themselves. Questions of authenticity determine our regard for others, as well. They dominated the presidential primaries: Was Hillary authentic when she shed a tear in New Hampshire? Was Obama earnest when his speechwriters cribbed lines from a friend's oration? " Americans remain deeply invested in the notion of the authentic self, " says ethicist John Portmann of the University of Virginia. " It's part of the national consciousness. "

name calling

Last week McCain and Bush got in a little spat, which ended up being about who had gone negative. Bush put out an ad saying McCain's proposal to cut certain corporate deductions --like for seats at sporting events -- would amount to a $40 billion tax increase. McCain denied it was an increase at all and accused Bush of breaking their long-standing pledge not to engage in negative campaigning. Then he launched an ad saying Bush had gone negative. Bush complained that McCain was engaging in "name calling." Are these guys running for social chair? What happened to that tough guy in the flight suit in all those McCain posters?
(Time. Don't Worry, Be Angry. 2000.)

When Susan Rapaport and her husband split up four years ago, her son, Joseph, who was 5 at the time, would get excessively upset whenever anyone reprimanded him. " So anytime I had to call him on something, I made sure to add, " I want you with me always, and I'm never going to leave you, "' says the Chevy Chase, Maryland, mother of three.
(Mary Garner Ganske. When parents divorce. Parenting. 2002)

One night in our tiny Boston apartment after a friend had gone home after a lovely dinner, my husband opened another bottle of wine. He took a swig, threw me to the floor, began to kick and spit on me and call me names. I somehow got out of our apartment and began running through the streets of Beacon Hill, not knowing where I was going. It was 1975; he was running after me, yelling and screaming horrible names in the dark Saturday night in that sedate neighborhood.

rule the roost / roast?

"rule the roost"、"rule the roast"、意味は同じようですが、なぜ似たような単語で2つの表現があるのでしょうか?

私がよく利用させてもらっている、Corpus of Contemporary American Englishでは、"rule the roost"では使用例がありますが、"rule the roast"の使用例はヒットしませんでした。

kindly

The kindly foreman was too reticent to openly castigate the clumsy new worker.

kindly"は副詞としても、形容詞としてもほぼ同等に使われているようですが、個人的には、"kindly let me know sth..."や"You are kindly requested not to smoke."

gulag

”労働教化刑”は"sentences of reform through labor"が相当するようです。

North Korea's sentencing of two American TV journalists to 12 years of hard labor Monday could imperil the Obama administration's already difficult goal of curtailing the authoritarian nation's nuclear weapons ambitions.

If no deal is reached, the two women face a grim future in a brutal prison system notorious for its lack of adequate food and medical supplies and its high death rate.

Laura Ling and Euna Lee, reporters for San Francisco-based Current TV, were convicted by the nation's top Central Court of an unspecified "grave crime" against the hard-line regime after they were arrested in March along the Chinese-North Korean border while reporting a story on human trafficking.

In a terse statement Monday, the state-run Korean Central News Agency did not say where the women are to serve the time. North Koreans who receive similar sentences of "reform through labor" often face starvation and torture in a penal system many consider among the world's most repressive, said David Hawk, author of the 2004 study "The Hidden Gulag: Exposing North Korea's Prison Camps."
(Los Angels Times. June 9, 2009)

bad hair day

Every dog has his day.

Mother Jones: Credit crisis, credit crunch, depression, recession, slowdown, downturn—why do you think we have so many terms for our current financial situation?

Geoffrey Nunberg: To a large extent, the uncertainty about what to call it has a lot to do with the uncertainty about what it is—and how optimistic or pessimistic you are and what you have done with that 401(k). The word "recession" was originally introduced as a euphemism for "depression." And very quickly those words acquired the connotations they were designed to escape. I'm kind of nostalgic for the days when we just called them "hard times." The new language gives an aura of precision that really isn't justified. In fact, whatever economists tell you, words like "recession" and "depression" are really no more accurate and precise than "bad hair day."

prudent

PARIS - The French government expressed deep disappointment Friday over the news that ocean debris recovered by the Brazilian military this week appeared to be the remains of a shipwreck and not from an Air France jet that crashed in the South Atlantic on Monday.

In radio interviews, France's transportation minister, Dominique Bussereau, urged "extreme prudence" about judging the source of any debris that is recovered until it could be properly analyzed.

"French authorities have been saying for several days that we have to be extremely prudent. Our planes and naval ships have seen nothing." (Brazil Says Recovered Debris Not From Jet. New York Times.)

buckwheat

The Cool Soba Noodles with Garlic Pork & Mushrooms is an easy dish that you can make in many different guises. Try using chicken instead of pork, or use no meat at all, just mushrooms, which work particularly well with the earthy flavor of buckwheat noodles. Soba noodles are easy to overcook, which is one of the reasons recipes often call for cooling them under running water after cooking. But I prefer not to totally douse them under the faucet or they end up too slippery.

skid row

Gerard Hernandez, 55, who has lived on Skid Row for seven years, said living at the 57-room Harold represents " the difference between night and day " from the older hotels he occupied before moving there two years ago. He said the walls at the Panama Hotel, which has since been purchased and renovated, were covered with graffiti, and human feces often smeared the bathroom floors. granularity

The word granularity is used in a number of different ways in SOA discussions. In this discussion of service design we consider the granularity of the services themselves, that is, the number of operations a service should have.

There can be no simple heuristic for determining service granularity. Rather, we offer two examples of factors that you should consider when designing services:
Services will usually be the unit of testing and release. If granularity is too coarse, if we group together a large numbers of operations in a single service, then we will tend to increase the number of consumers for the service. Hence if we make amendments to some aspect of a service, perhaps for the benefit of only a subset of consumers, we must re-release the whole service and hence potentially impact all consumers.

One challenge for the service consumer is to find the correct operations. Typically the consumer needs to browse a list of services and, having identified a suitable service, the list of service operations. We suggest that extremes in service granularity -- either many services with few methods, or few services with many tens or hundreds of operations -- will tend to impede consumability.

This indicates that in selecting service granularities we are likely to be trading off factors such as maintainability, operability and consumability. Any given SOA should provide guidance to service designers as they consider such trade offs. (SOA realization: Service design principles. David J.N. Artus)

slaughter
